A lot of people say "I don't want to squash my tone and remove all of my playing expression", which is a fair point if you have a lower quality compressor or it's not set up properly, but a quick look at professional guitar players rigs and most of them will have compression in it, so, that would lead you to believe that compression is actually imperative to a lot of players.

So, what does it do..? Fundamentally, it adds an element of control to your playing level - it will bring the quieter parts up and the louder parts down. A great tube amp when driven into its sweet spot will do this, a compressor can bring you that control but a great compressor will give you that feel as well. Many budget compressors give you the squash and squeeze of a driven amp, but you tend to lose all of your playing dynamics, all of your expression.

The Ego Compressor will take that element of squash and squeeze, but will allow you to be able to control the effect so that your playing can shine through. It has been said before that the mark of a great compressor is that you can forget you have it on.

When Brian at Wampler designed this pedal, the word that kept coming back to him was "transparency". The way the Ego has been designed, there is no coloration of your sound. The tone and blend controls allow you to balance the effect in such a way your signal path sounds so pure when the reality is that the pedal is working extra hard to make your playing tick like clockwork.

Now, if you are not familiar with the Ego Compressor, you will probably be thinking "What's a blend control?". The blend is a dry mix, that sweeps between a fully effected signal to zero effect across the sweep of the pot. There will be a point in that sweep that allows you all the compression you need to even out your playing, increase your sustain (if you want it) but without any detraction from you playing attack and feel. That, previously was just a dream, but now; that is a reality. When this amazingly simple yet devastatingly effective control is added with the tone control (that can add a little sparkle to the tone), when this pedal is used as "an effect" rather than as an "always on" (to control your solos or to fatten up your rhythms), a little extra bit of sparkle allows your guitar to sit in that place in the band mix that you have been trying to fit into but couldn't quite find. Just a littler higher, a little sweeter in the mix.

This is the effect that you probably didn't realize you needed, but once you have used once, cannot imagine living without.

I've owned a lot of compressors/limiters/line-boosters over the years (all the usual suspects plus quite a few "boutique" choices). Some of them even sound as good as the Ego at a couple of things, but none of them sound as good as the Ego at everything. Literally, it works well as all three, and at any two-part combination: comp/boost, limit/boost, comp, boost or limit. It's also very quiet and very transparent (unlike DynaComps, CS-2/-3s, Doublebacks, etc.) The blend/mix control also works extremely well. Your uneffected signal can be added back into the overall output (you read right, added in, not mixed in). So, if you like using your comp after your dirt rather than before it, and if you like the idea of driving your pre-amp tubes hot, into sweet, natural-breakup territory, this little ego-maniac does that too. For live in-the-pedalboard applications, Ego's #1.

Overall, comp/limit-wise though, my #1 choice is the MarkBass Compressore, followed by the Wampler Ego in the number two spot, the Diamond CPR-1 in third and the Mad Professor Forest Green in fourth. (Four on the floor.)

The attack and blend knobs are nice features and it's a decent enough compressor pedal. But I was pretty underwhelmed with it relative to other options out there that cost a lot less. Talking about the "character" of compressor pedals is tricky business but it's generally the bad ones that stick out more than the very good ones.

This one's decent and you can't go wrong with it but my experience with the pedal is that it's hardly the miracle compressor being that it's made out to be in Internet land. I strongly suggest making a trip to the store to try this next to some alternatives instead of having one shipped to you. (Especially if you're going off of forum reviews and listening to YouTube reviews which are themselves have compressed audio).

I like the MXR Custom better, and that's at least a little bit less than this. If you've tried that, and aren't happy with other lower-cost options like the CS-3 or Dyna, then by all means grab this. I think it costs twice as much as it's worth myself.

Comments about Wampler Ego Compressor Guitar Effects Pedal:

I was looking for as transparent a compressor as possible. Listening to youtube videos, this seemed to be about the best--though I may have missed some that are out there. I got the chance to A-B it vs. the Xotic, which is also very nice, but this edged it in terms of transparency and versatility. It's not perfect, but you can tweak it to find a pretty good balance between preserving the signal and smoothing/adding sustain. I'm glad that a pedal of this quality is available at such a good price! I gave it 4 stars because I'm picky, but it's the best I've been able to play with.

Just the right amount of features. This is a quality compressor. I owned the Keeley Compressor before but this is much better and now sets the standard for expectations in a Compressor. Perfect sound and great features. Plug and play my friends!!

This is a tight compressor pedal. Built very well and looks great too. Extremely versatile and easy to use. I love the foot switch because of the nice light touch. Very impressed. Would put it up against a Keeley any day.

I put this at the beginning of my effects chain. Like all wampler FX it is built like a tank and won't change your tone.

Comments about Wampler Ego Compressor Guitar Effects Pedal:

a very good upgrade if your using a dyna comp or similar compressor, this is basically the same circuit but with more parameter control and more volume on tap, tone control adds some nice sparkle as well not to harsh, only issue is price if your on a budget.

              best non-rack unit compressor

              By amir

              from maryland

Comments about Wampler Ego Compressor Guitar Effects Pedal:

This is a studio quality compressor in a portable, lightweight box. I've tried other compressors, they all either run to high of a gain boost(for me of course), color the tone too much, and overall don't make a compressor worth getting. THIS COMPRESSOR however, does everything it should and well. There is no color, it is transparent, honestly don't notice it's on. Which is good thing for me. I wanted a compressor that brought out my harmonics, beefed up my clean tone, and get some more overall definition. This pedal is the winner. The sustain doesn't bloat my low end, the attack isn't brittle however when cranked too high it can give that poppy, gainy compressed sound that everyone loves, THE TONE KNOB ISN'T A MUD KNOB SO ENDLESS PRAISE ON THAT, aaand the blend knob makes it so you can go from traditional aggressive compy sound to subtle compy sound and any where in between. I play high gain, low tuned, aggressive, and syncopated music and other comp got in the way of that. Either too much high end boost, or it'd make the low end boomy and bloated. This pedal compliments every sound I make, it plays well with my other pedals and my amp, AND it has taken from "ew compressors" to "yes I need this in my signal chain forever". Buy now.

I've owned more expensive compressors, but this one delivers even more and easy to dial in. The 'Blend' control brings you even more control. The Wampler EGO Compressor is the choice of many professionals and I can see why.

Would I recommend to others? I already have.

I play modern country, and this comp gives me the squeeze my guitars need. I mean, if guys like Brad Paisley, Keith Urban, and Brent Mason use 'em, they gotta be doing something right? LoL. The blend knob is killer, and you can really dial in what kind of compressed tone you're looking for. This pedal is almost always on when it's plugged-in.
