An outstanding acoustic guitar...

By Don

from San Diego, CA

Comments about Voyage-Air Guitar Premier Series VAOM-2C Full-Size Folding Orchestra Model Acoustic Guitar:

Although made in China, workmanship on everything that shows is first rate. Some bracing that isn't visible could have been more carefully sanded. The Taylors I have owned were as pristine inside as they were outside. One tiny piece of kerfed lining (bracing that joins the top or backs to the sides) on the back in the sharpest part of the curve of the cutaway that is visible from the sound hole has a tiny piece broken off. Not a structural issue, and not really a problem, but it does bug me a little knowing there is a flaw, however insignificant. The good news however, this guitar absolutely sings with sustain, and is very responsive to finger style playing. Having downsized to living full-time in an RV, I have sold off my Taylors (all top of the line Limited editions with Brazilian Rosewood, koa, Grafted Walnut, etc.) and my Martin DF41, etc., so I have been without a steel string acoustic for awhile. The unique folding neck design of the Voyage-Air guitar (Premier Series VAOM 1C), gives me the ability to have a steel string acoustic guitar with me again. The quality of sound, the playability, and the fit and finish makes it so I don't even miss my Taylors... it is that good! Unlike reviews I read that the guitar is nearly in tune after unfolding, I find that it is usually sharp almost a whole step after getting it out of the case. However, once tuned after unfolding, it settles in pretty quickly and stays in tune about as well as any acoustic guitar I have owned. I am putting on some Grover Roto-Lock tuners and that may help some. The tuners that came with it, while nice looking, are not up to the quality level of the guitar itself. The gear ratio is too quick (guessing 10 or 12 to 1). Also, given the nature of the folding neck, it seems like locking tuners is really a no brainer. I understand the need to make a profit and be able to sell the product at a price point however, and this guitar is good enough that spending another $100 on quality tuners still makes it a bargain as far as I am concerned. That, and installing a pickup...

Comments about Voyage-Air Guitar Premier Series VAOM-2C Full-Size Folding Orchestra Model Acoustic Guitar:

The reason for buying a guitar like this is to have a high quality, "road warrior" instrument. As long as the instrument isn't subjected to "normal" travel conditions, it will survive and out perform 3/4 size guitars (such as Baby Taylors and Little Martins). However, the transit case that comes with the instrument DOES NOT stand up to protecting the instrument against those surrounding travelers that will inevitably throw their luggage in the overhead bin on top of your prize posession. This is particularly true with the grain structure of the neck and the hinge points. When I contacted Voyage Air to tell them about where the neck snapped along the grain at the hinge point, they stated the repari cost would be extensive - though it really appears to me to be more of a design flaw (in the case AND the neck design).

On the up side, when it works, it works well and sports rich tone and good playability. The instrument itself has a nice rosette and bindings, and doesn't have the nasal sound of instruments built from composite materials.

Additionally, the VOAM-2C, a guitar touted to be in their premiere line, does not include any electronics. I ended up buying a Fishman in-hole pickup to get me past this challenge, but again - Voyage Air should have an option to include something like a LR Baggs M-80 (or equivelent) pickup. So, unless you're mic'd abiently or put in a pickup system you've got a guitar that is not gig-ready.

Voyage Air really needs to work these design flaws out and stand behind their products when we spend the amount of money they're demanding for this product.

Great travel guitar.

Comments about Voyage-Air Guitar Premier Series VAOM-2C Full-Size Folding Orchestra Model Acoustic Guitar:

This guitar is better than the lower end Martin's and Taylors. I've owned Martin, Taylors, Santa Cruz, Breedlove and Huss and Dalton guitars. While doesn't sound as good as the medium or high end Martins or Taylors but for the price is pretty darn good considering that the neck folds up for travel. I wouldn't have a problem using it for casual gigs.
As the owner for over 30 guitars I can stay that that this is best travel guitar made. The folding neck functions well and is easy to deploy. The backpack is very functional and it will fit in the overhead bin of any full size air plane.
The guitar body looks just as good as any Martin or Taylor. The body is fully bound and the binding is quality. The rosette, while not being very detailed looks better than most guitar in the price range. The top, sides and back are well finished with no flaws. The neck has a matte finish which is common with guitars in this price range. I prefer the feel of laquer, The neck is somewhat beefy which is what I like. The fretboard quality is above average. The action is a tad high but better than the other travel guitars that I've played.
This is hands down the best travel guitar that I've played.

VAOM 2C Voyage Air guitar

By C. Michael Lynn

from Germantown, Tennessee

Comments about Voyage-Air Guitar Premier Series VAOM-2C Full-Size Folding Orchestra Model Acoustic Guitar:

I have a number of travel guitars including a VAOM guitar at a lower price point with Laminate back and sides. I upgraded because I wanted a cutaway and one with a solid top along with back and sides. The woods (rosewood and spruce) are tight grained and AAA grade wood. In my opinion the VAOM 2C for traveling with a solid wood guitar, may be the best currently on the market. I also own a Rainsong and CA composite guitars, including the cargo. They are great sounding guitars, but not a compact as the Voyage Air and they don't give you the sound of a wooden guitar. As far as the sound of the VAOM 2C guitar, it sounds above average and plays adequately. Again it is the best sound I have experienced for a travel guitar made of wood. It is not one that I'd play over some of my other guitars that don't fold at the neck. I purchased it to carry with me when we travel by plane and it easily stores (without the laptop section of the case) in the overhead of the plane. I don't know how over time the folding neck hinge will hold up, but time will tell the tale. I've owned this new one a couple of days and have just installed a fishman matrix infinity and I'm pleased with the sound through the amp. I hope this helps you decide.

Comments about Voyage-Air Guitar Premier Series VAOM-2C Full-Size Folding Orchestra Model Acoustic Guitar:

I don't own one of these guitars yet, I'm saving my money to get the top of the line model. I have played it and witnessed the guitar folded and unfolded with it still being in tune. I never thought it would be possible to do that, but it does work. The guitar holds its own on tone, sound and playability. Can't wait to get one

Not only a travel guitar!

By Tony

from Lincoln, Ca

Comments about Voyage-Air Guitar Premier Series VAOM-2C Full-Size Folding Orchestra Model Acoustic Guitar:

I bought this for overseas travel - it played great out of the box, but I had Roseville Guitar Works tweak it up and install a K&K transducer pickup. I also fitted (drop in compatible) Grover Locking Tuners. This guitar plays so darn well that I was too scared to travel with it just in case something happened to it! Too precious. I no longer play my Taylors, Martins and Breedlove - this sweet baby does it all. I love it and highly recommend this guitar as the great all-purpose, loud, well intonated instrument that it is.

Voyage-Air VAOM-2C

By Steve Loggie

from Wichita Falls, TX

Comments about Voyage-Air Guitar Premier Series VAOM-2C Full-Size Folding Orchestra Model Acoustic Guitar:

I travel by air a lot and needed a guitar that was airline friendly. This VAOM-2C is my first non-Martin guitar, and I am blown away by it. Flawless construction, great tone, perfect intonation all the way up. It came with low/medium action. I changed the strings to medium gauge to get a little more low end. The case is great since it is a double backpack with a padded pocket for my laptop. Fold it up, reassemble (20 seconds)....99% in tune...amazing.
