  • Voyage-Air VAOM-2C

As reviewed by Steve Loggie on 5/5/2010

I travel by air a lot and needed a guitar that was airline friendly. This VAOM-2C is my first non-Martin guitar, and I am blown away by it. Flawless construction, great tone, perfect intonation all the way up. It came with low/medium action. I changed the strings to medium gauge to get a little more low end. The case is great since it is a double backpack with a padded pocket for my laptop. Fold it up, reassemble (20 seconds)....99% in tune...amazing.

  • An outstanding acoustic guitar...

As reviewed by Don on 12/22/2014

Although made in China, workmanship on everything that shows is first rate. Some bracing that isn't visible could have been more carefully sanded. The Taylors I have owned were as pristine inside as they were outside. One tiny piece of kerfed lining (bracing that joins the top or backs to the sides) on the back in the sharpest part of the curve of the cutaway that is visible from the sound hole has a tiny piece broken off. Not a structural issue, and not really a problem, but it does bug me a little knowing there is a flaw, however insignificant. The good news however, this guitar absolutely sings with sustain, and is very responsive to finger style playing. Having downsized to living full-time in an RV, I have sold off my Taylors (all top of the line Limited editions with Brazilian Rosewood, koa, Grafted Walnut, etc.) and my Martin DF41, etc., so I have been without a steel string acoustic for awhile. The unique folding neck design of the Voyage-Air guitar (Premier Series VAOM 1C), gives me the ability to have a steel string acoustic guitar with me again. The quality of sound, the playability, and the fit and finish makes it so I don't even miss my Taylors... it is that good! Unlike reviews I read that the guitar is nearly in tune after unfolding, I find that it is usually sharp almost a whole step after getting it out of the case. However, once tuned after unfolding, it settles in pretty quickly and stays in tune about as well as any acoustic guitar I have owned. I am putting on some Grover Roto-Lock tuners and that may help some. The tuners that came with it, while nice looking, are not up to the quality level of the guitar itself. The gear ratio is too quick (guessing 10 or 12 to 1). Also, given the nature of the folding neck, it seems like locking tuners is really a no brainer. I understand the need to make a profit and be able to sell the product at a price point however, and this guitar is good enough that spending another $100 on quality tuners still makes it a bargain as far as I am concerned. That, and installing a pickup...

  • VAOM 2C Voyage Air guitar

As reviewed by C. Michael Lynn on 2/26/2011

I have a number of travel guitars including a VAOM guitar at a lower price point with Laminate back and sides. I upgraded because I wanted a cutaway and one with a solid top along with back and sides. The woods (rosewood and spruce) are tight grained and AAA grade wood. In my opinion the VAOM 2C for traveling with a solid wood guitar, may be the best currently on the market. I also own a Rainsong and CA composite guitars, including the cargo. They are great sounding guitars, but not a compact as the Voyage Air and they don't give you the sound of a wooden guitar. As far as the sound of the VAOM 2C guitar, it sounds above average and plays adequately. Again it is the best sound I have experienced for a travel guitar made of wood. It is not one that I'd play over some of my other guitars that don't fold at the neck. I purchased it to carry with me when we travel by plane and it easily stores (without the laptop section of the case) in the overhead of the plane. I don't know how over time the folding neck hinge will hold up, but time will tell the tale. I've owned this new one a couple of days and have just installed a fishman matrix infinity and I'm pleased with the sound through the amp. I hope this helps you decide.
