Overview

The Vox amPlug is a headphone amp that can help you to create the perfect practice session. The tiny amPlug plugs directly into your guitar--then just plug in your headphones and relish some great Vox tone.

Jamming late at night? Don't want to wake the neighbors? Maybe you want to work out a lick with your MP3 player without taking the time to set up your amp. If you want to play guitar right now, amPlug is the answer. Simply plug this palm-sized headphone guitar amp directly into your guitar, and enjoy serious guitar sound anywhere, anytime.

Even with its ultra-compact size, the Vox amPlug perfectly reproduces the complex and warm distortion that is distinctive of a vacuum tube, as well as the powerful high gain produced by a large amp stack. Using analog modeling technology, amPlug delivers full-fledged amp sound.

Even the circuit response of the original amp is simulated completely. The simulation extends not only to the response of the tone circuits, but also to the way in which the high frequency and gain are affected when you turn down the volume control of the guitar. Every detail has been faithfully reproduced.

amPlug can be used in numerous ways. With up to fifteen hours of battery life, it's easy to take amPlug anywhere. In addition to practicing at home, it's a great way to warm up before a live performance or on the road. And amPlug is not just a convenient way to get great guitar sound. There's also an AUX input jack so you can jam along with your CD/MP3 player.

Classic Rock gives you the great high-gain sound of a UK-made 100W amp, and uses four classical gain circuits to deliver that great sound.

Also available in AC30, that emulates the AC30 top boost sound of a vintage VOX AC30, and Metal, based on a California-made high-gain amplifier head.

I was looking for a headphone amp for bassists and found no luck in quality and sound. I spotted this little plastic Vox, and thought I might as well give it a try (I wanted a headphone amp, it was a headphone amp, it was made by a good company). I was surprised to how well it took the bass sound! I messed around with the Classic Rock and AC-30 models (I prefered the AC-30, but only because I'm into clean bass, not distortion) and found I had tons of control in my overall sound and response! The little sucker did it! I brought one home and tried it on all of my basses, and it held like a champ. I think this was a very smart buy for bass or guitar players, and if you read this far, go get one today and see for yourself!

For the price it's understandable that only so much sound quality can be expected. That said, I have high output pick ups and the overdrive was too much unless you dial it way back. Using the aux. line in to practice and learn songs for various gigs was the main reason I bought it. I happened to sit down and inadvertently put too much side pressure on the aux. cord. The tiny circuit board connections were broken leaving only the guitar sound available. Will still be useful for gig warm-up but not for the main purpose. It needs about $10 retail value built into it to reinforce the connection and make the housing stronger.

Great Practice Tool - Classic Rock

By Steve

from NYC

Comments about Vox amPlug Metal Guitar Headphone Amp:

A very handy practice tool. I've got kids and practice most of the time when they are asleep. I have a Gibson LP so I like to hear it really crank - and of course can't do that when they are asleep. I popped this in use headphone and the sound quality is decent. The tone and reverb dials are sensitive enough to provide a range of different sounds. I have the classic rock and am happy with the purchase.

Good for late night sessions...or travel

By Dan

from Chicago

Comments about Vox amPlug Metal Guitar Headphone Amp:

This works good. Don't expect you are going to get a wide range of tone... won't replace a good amp...but for what it is, it's cool. Inexpensive, with a nice sound and simple design, it works really well. If you are a beginner or even a fair hobbyist, it will do when you just want to play and not alert the neighbors... and it's small enough to take anywhere.

Worth the Price and then some

By LJN

from Scottsdale, AZ

Comments about Vox amPlug Metal Guitar Headphone Amp:

I purchased the Vox amPlug Classic Rock so that I could play my electric guitar more while my family is home. I was knocked out by the sound. It sounds way better than the practice amp that I usually use and no complaints about noise from the family. Good investment. LJN

For Those Times When U Just Can't Crank it to 11....

By Stee

from Maryville, TN

Comments about Vox amPlug Metal Guitar Headphone Amp:

I was surprised at the quality of tone and the variety of sounds I could dial in out of this thing. It's not gonna replace a quality larger amp, but for its price and for its intended purpose, it's EXCELLENT. I can get anything from a nice clean tone to blues, grunge, and crunch with a little tweaking. Very satisfied. Will probably get the Metal, Lead, and Bass versions in the future for late night practice. Solid buy.

Average Product

By Mardie

from The Big Easy

Comments about Vox amPlug Metal Guitar Headphone Amp:

I'm a beginner. In my opinion the Vox AmPlug seems to have decent sound for its intended purpose. I'm very particular about a products design and reliability. The AmPlugs case is made from a light weight plastic. I'm concerned that when plugged into the guitar, one wrong move could damage the AmPlug. The dials for the gain, tone, and volume are small and hard to read however, once you are familiar with the locations of the dials it should become easy to operate.

Great Practice Tool with Good Tone

By Trin

from Hartford, CT

Comments about Vox amPlug Metal Guitar Headphone Amp:

Bought the Classic Amplug for home practice. I originally purchased the AC30, and while the sound was very good, it did not provide the level of gain I wanted. The Classic is perfect. You can dial in a nice clean tone or add gain to achieve a good overdriven sound. The gain and tone controls are very responsive and provide a lot of flexibility to provide a range of tones. It can also be used to directly plug into a PA. Keep in mind that this is a practice tool and not an alternative to a quality amp, so it should not be judged against an amp. It is very good for its intended use as a quiet alternative to playing through an amp. All in all, I am very pleased with this product.

Excellent practice tool, great sound.

By Nate Dogg

from Houston, TX

Comments about Vox amPlug Metal Guitar Headphone Amp:

I'm going on a family vacation in a few days, and really wanted to have something to practice with while I was gone: this is perfect. Sounds a lot bigger than it is! One thing I love is that it reacts well with the volume knob on my guitar; you can get cleans and distortion without messing with the amPlug's knobs. If you need a silent, portable practice tool, this is perfect!

Beyond Expectations!

By Craig M.

from Cheshire, CT

Comments about Vox amPlug Metal Guitar Headphone Amp:

I don't write reviews on products, but this one merits one! The 3 switches that control GAIN, TONE and VOLUME become 2nd nature after a short stint. The quality of the sound is what shocked me most of all though. I am going on vacation to Cape Cod, and I decided to take a chance on this portable amp, since I wouldn't be able to lug along my bulky practice amp. I was pleasantly surprised! I may stop practicing with my practice amp now altogether now that I have this....it is so convenient and practical to use. It's even made in JAPAN, which I like ( I can't stand stuff made in China ) I would give it 6 stars if I could, bravo Vox!

a pleasant suprise

By Chuck

from Eugene, OR

Comments about Vox amPlug Metal Guitar Headphone Amp:

I received one of these as an xmas gift and it sat in its package for over a year because I have both a low watt tube amp and a POD XT for apartment level practice. I finally broke it out this evening in a fit of boredom and was pleasantly suprised. It has a really nice tone and suprisingly effective controls for gain/tone/volume. Definately a nice open sounding crunch somewhat along the lines of AC/DC. Not over the top with gain, but very classic rock sounding. I still wont use it much at home, but its so small i can stash it in my guitar case when I travel and still have some nice tone for practicing on the road.

Good

Comments about Vox amPlug Metal Guitar Headphone Amp:

When i got this my only concern was if you could get a good clean tone out of it as well. And you can get a decent clean tone out of it. You cant expect to get but so much for the price, but this is well worth it. It can get a great distorted tone for classic rock.

Great For Travel

By Joseph Spicer

from Tehachapi, CA

Comments about Vox amPlug Metal Guitar Headphone Amp:

I'm a truck driver and I regularly stay in hotels. This little guy allows me to practice w/o disturbing the other guest. It's so small that it fits easily into my case. The sound is clear and I can change the tone for a clean sound or sustained classic rock sound. It's perfect for anyone who wants to practice w/o disturbing anyone. The Vox Headphone amp is awesome. I love it.

GREAT "AMP" FOR SILENT PRACTICE !

By David Brown

from El Paso, Texas

Comments about Vox amPlug Metal Guitar Headphone Amp:

I just received, as a gem of a gift, the VOX Classic Rock "Amplug" from Guitar Center. It is every bit as good a product as I have imagined its being, perhaps even better! I previously had used a big, fat, bright-orange "Pocket Rocket" Headphone Amp for playing privately, though I never was quite satisfied with it. All of its complicated, yet surprisingly inadequate, controls were located on the same end of it, making them difficult to distinguish from one another and to use by feel (i.e., when attached to the bottom edge of the guitar). I seemed to bump the cumbersome monster on every little thing, which unexpectedly changed my chosen setting in an instant, sometimes even switching the unit off entirely. My biggest complaint with the Pocket Rocket, however, was the tone; it simply did not sound true to the guitar. (All this, of course, was assuming that the unit would be working at all. The battery compartment had a nasty habit of making poor contact.) // Now, along comes the nicely-compact VOX, which is superior in every manner to my former amp. The on/off switch is very small (but solid) and located on the side of the unit; thus, it cannot be operated by mistake. This amp lies much flatter to the guitar, so it never gets in the way of playing. And the tone. . . WOW! It reliably conveys the sound of a high-quality guitar as if it were played through a high-quality amp. Through the inclusion of only three very simple, wheel-type controls, "Volume," "Tone," and "Gain," the Classic Rock Amplug allows amazing flexibility of sound, ranging from pure and sweet to ferociously distorted (and everything in-between). These are far from being all-or-nothing controls. Now I find that I may practice my guitar anytime, anywhere, without fear of disturbing others. I know that I can depend upon the sound I am hearing, knowing that it is very close to the tone which I would be producing through a true sound-field amplifier. I recommend this item highly as an inexpensive yet useful guitar practice tool.

Love my Vox Amplug!

By Douglas Tingle

from Providence, RI

Comments about Vox amPlug Metal Guitar Headphone Amp:

I'm a novice guitarist but long time music fan. I love being able to rock out on my front porch or late at night in my apartment and nobody can hear me. I play lots of Dylan and Neil Young and I think the Classic Rock Amplug sounds great! If you don't turn up the gain a bit it may not be loud enough for some people, but with gain at about 3 or higher it gets plenty loud. Sound quality is quite good but there is some background noise which can usually be kept to a not noticeable minimum by fiddling with the gain and tone controls. For the Strat players out there it fits quite fine on my American Standard. All in all, I love my Vox Classic Rock Amplug!

Great sound

By Mark

from Athens, GA

Comments about Vox amPlug Metal Guitar Headphone Amp:

This thing really kicked my butt as I was not expecting to have this kind of sound from such a small device. With the gain cranked and the volume at max you almost feel like you can get some feedback! There is not a wide range of tone but it's not an amp and it's perfect for practicing when you can't rattle the windows. For what it is and the price I would highly recommend it.

Vox Rocks!

By David

from Monroe NC

Comments about Vox amPlug Metal Guitar Headphone Amp:

Great little gadget for practice. I was really surprised by the sound this little guy produces. We plugged in a Fender Squire with a new set of strings, and we were very impressed. The output is really incredible. Working between the tone controls on the amp and your guitar you can produce some really cool sounds.
