Overview

The convenient and powerful Valvetronix VT40+ combo amp delivers the guitar sounds sought after by discerning guitarists of every style. With a 12AX7 preamp tube, powerful new amp models, and the unique Power Level control, the VT40 Plus is ready to deliver the response and sound every player needs.

Tube-powered VOX Valve Reactor circuit
Every guitar player seeks the power and playability delivered by a tube amp; the fat drive tone, wide dynamic range, subtle picking nuances, and quick response. After painstaking analysis of guitarists' tastes and preferences, VOX has focused on the importance of the power amp circuit in creating the sonic characteristics long sought from tube amps. The VOX Valve Reactor was developed out of this power amp philosophy. Based on a 12AX7 vacuum tube, the Valve Reactor circuit at the heart of the Valvetronix VT40+ amp perfectly reproduces the operation, subtle nuances, and tonal character of a real tube-powered amp.

More amp models than ever before
The new Valvetronix+ Series boasts an amazing collection of 33 distinct amp models - a new milestone for Valvetronix amplifiers. In addition, the Valvetronix+ represents a giant leap in quality. The preamp EQ features Bass, Middle and Treble controls for precise tone-shaping. Beginning with classic VOX amps such as the AC30, the diverse amp model selection continues to encompass coveted amps from the pages of history, as well as the latest high-gain amps, providing a sound selection that spans the ages. Call up the sound of an old favorite, or experiment with amps you may never have tried - sought-after amps played by your guitar heroes, rare boutique amps, and vintage amps - and pursue unexplored sonic paths.

25 Diverse, high-quality effects
One of the best features of the VOX Valvetronix VT40+ modeling amp is the ability to combine the built-in effects with the onboard amp models to create a complete and powerful sound. Just as with the effects, the VT40+ makes no compromises when it comes to effects, boasting a level of quality that rivals top standalone units. The broad array of effects is divided into two sections: Pedal effects such as distortion, wah, and compressor; and Modulation/Delay effects such as chorus, flanger, and tape echo. In each section, there are 11 effects to choose from. Featuring easy-to-use settings, you can simultaneously select the effect type and adjust its parameters. In addition, there are three types of Reverb (Room, Spring, and Hall). With the addition of Noise Reduction, up to four different effects can be used at the same time.

99 Preset programs
The musicians at VOX have put together 99 preset programs for the VT40+, expertly voiced and ready for immediate use. Each of the 33 amp models provides three presets: Basic, Effected, and Song. An Effected preset calls up the correct combination of effect type and setting for a particular style.

Song presets are just like Effected presets; each one is a faithful recreation of the signature sound used by a famous guitarist to perform one of their classic tracks. Of course you're also free to edit any preset - or start from scratch with the manual setting - and save up to eight of your own custom sounds to the User presets.

Beyond the numbers
One of the greatest advances from previous Valvetronix models is the astounding sense of power generated by the VT40+. The power amp section has the potential to significantly exceed the wattage value indicated by the model name - as indicated by the shaded section of the Power Level knob. The new Valvetronix+ Series also feature a newly re-voiced VOX original design speaker that is sure to amaze you with a powerful sound that you would not expect from a chassis and speaker of this size. These fine Valvetronix+ amplifiers genuinely deliver sonic power that cannot be expressed by mere numbers.

Seize the power
The sense of drive produced in the tube power stage is what defines the inimitably fat and warm tone that's at the core of a great guitar amp sound. Our tube-driven Valve Reactor circuitry is at the heart of recreating this sound. Volume, Gain, and Master Volume controls provide key levels of controlling your gain to achieve a wealth of clean, overdriven and distorted sounds. In addition, these new Valvetronix+ Series amplifiers feature an altogether unique Power Level control. By lowering the Power Level, it's possible to achieve high levels of gain and distortion at any listening level. And, as was mentioned above, reserve power can also be dialed in using the Power Level control when you really need your amp to scream. The Power Level control allows you to take full advantage of the Valvetronix+ Series potential in any situation.

Convenient and versatile input and output
The headphone out jack can also be used as a direct line output. This output is equipped with the simulated response and character of a speaker cabinet, so you'll enjoy the natural spatial sense of playing through speakers, even when using headphones or when connected to a mixer or recording system. Plug your CD or MP3 player into the AUX input jack and enjoy jamming along with your favorite songs. In addition, the tuning function needed by every guitarist is built in, eliminating the need for a separate tuner.

Optional VFS5 footswitch operation
Plug in the optional VFS5 footswitch and use your feet to switch programs, turn the reverb and other effects on/off, and control their speed, providing additional options for sonic creativity and live performance power.

I was interested in finding a reasonably price amp that had great tone and versatility. I thoroughly researched my options and narrowed it down to a few choices. I went into Guitar Center and tried out several amps within the price range. I had been considering a full on tube amp but was not willing to commit to a single type of sound without purchasing several pedals. Out of everyone I tried the VT40+ by far has the best tone. It is very responsive and works great with aftermarket pick ups. It has seemingly endless different adjustments and features that take some time to figure out fully. The Vox VT+ series were the only modeling amps that gave a true valve feel and tone. There are one or two settings that sound a little digital. Overall the amp offers a great range of sounds from clean, blues, and even metal. I would have liked to have seen a line out feature but definitely not a deal breaker. The Vt40+ sounds great with the amperage turned down but really cooks above 30 watts. I would recommend any of the VT+ series amps for people looking for great tone, wide variety of sounds at a reasonable price.

Great versatile amplifier at a great price!

By Ray P.

from Tannersville, PA

Comments about Vox Valvetronix VT40+ 40W 1x10 Guitar Combo Amp:

I wanted a good practice tube amplifier without spending too much. The VT40+ goes above and beyond what I expected. It has so much power that I am able to use it for live gigs. To get a little more balance through the PA system I sometimes mic it. The only thing that VOX could add to make it perfect would be a line out, other than the head phone line out. I would like to have the line out so that the amp speaker can still be heard. I would recommend any of the Plus VT's, since they are only a few dollars more.

Great Tone...

By Ced

Comments about Vox Valvetronix VT40+ 40W 1x10 Guitar Combo Amp:

I was looking for a new amplifier before getting a new guitar. I've tried the vt50 with my guitar and loved the tone I got out of it. Since the 50 was a little out of the price range, the VT 40+ does just as well. Even with a low end guitar it is still possible to get a great tone out of it. I'm still amazed at how many effects there are to choose from. If you're an advanced guitarist looking for great tone, quality and reliability, any of the Vox VT amps is a great way to go!

??a gift??

Comments about Vox Valvetronix VT40+ 40W 1x10 Guitar Combo Amp:

Don't let the size full you. This amps cranks... I got this amp for a couple days ago and I was a bit ??? to the size and all the affects thats on board, thinking it's a line6 nock off. Not to bad mouth line6. So i went and pluged it in and WOW I was floored with the tone and volume the this amp was giving. You can play any style you want. "Not that i can" but i might go and say that you could sell all your peddles you have, buy a sure 57 and you'll be good for any gig. (no line out) The reason i give this amp a 4 is no extended cab jack (another 10" speaker would bring a whole range of tone),no line out, last all the stuff you have to learn to fully get everything out of this amp is alot when you don't have time to sit down. It will come in time. Great amp for the price, great tone, small enough for bed room, loud enough for small gigs or pratice setting, and the price is low enough. Last thought, due to the pricing you could go as far as buying 2 for gigs and have more sound and tone than you could get with all the peddle people would use for 1/3 of the price, i hope this helped.

Great multipurpose amp!

By RHH

from Mooresville IN

Comments about Vox Valvetronix VT40+ 40W 1x10 Guitar Combo Amp:

After more than 30 years of playing on solid-state amps, I was looking for something affordable with the warm tube sound. Not wanting to invest in a bunch of pedals, I considered modeling amps. Months of research went into narrowing it down to the VOX VT40+ and Fender SuperChamp. Tried both at the local Guitar Center. No contest, walked away with the VOX. Thought the sound was somewhat better, plus the range of amp models, effects and programmability sold me. This amp has a very solid feel and the great VOX looks. I also picked up the VFS5 footswitch, feels like a quality product. So far I am very pleased with all the different sounds/effects that are available. This definitely has any tone I could ask for. Great amp at a great price!

This little amps rocks!!

By StratPete

from Woodbridge, VA

Comments about Vox Valvetronix VT40+ 40W 1x10 Guitar Combo Amp:

I have owned the VT40+ for a while and really like it, in fact I ended up selling my Mesa Boogie ElectraDyne which was a pain to haul around, didn't sound as good, at least for what I play, which is classic rock. Plus it cost me 6X as much as the VT40+! I initially intended to use it only as a practice/rehearsal amp, but it's actually quite loud and full sounding, so I will mic it through the venue PA and it'll be plenty loud. The cleans and distortion sounds are amazing. Just don't know what else to say about it. I owned the VT100 previously and loved it, but this is head-and-shoulders above that, both in terms of the amps sims and the effects. I don't find myself using the pedal sims too much, except the auto-wah which is cool, and the compressor, which gives a little more smoothness and sustain when you want it. The amp is very fat-sounding, and the modulation effects are very good. I use the chorus/delay, pitch shifter, reverb (very nice!), and the delays. FYI I decided to try the VT80+ when it became available, thinking it would sound as good as the VT40+, but a bit fuller. I started by copying over the settings for my 8 user patches on the VT40+ to the bigger amp. Surprisingly, at least to me, it sounds quite different. Side-by-side w/the exact same settings, I found myself liking the VT40+ a lot more. It has a sort of vintage-like quality that the larger amp doesn't. I also tried starting from scratch w/the VT80+, trying to find settings I liked. I found that the only sound I liked better on the larger amp was the Boutique Metal since it benefited from the extra bottom end from the larger speaker. The VT80+ certainly sounds decent, but a bit more generic to my ears, and without some of the unique "charm" of the VT40+. In case it matters, these results are based on a LP Standard w/Dimarzio Super Distortion in the bridge, PAF Pro in the neck. I have not compared the amps using my Strat yet. The VT40+ is an amazingly good-sounding little amp, you won't regret the purchase!

Comments about Vox Valvetronix VT40+ 40W 1x10 Guitar Combo Amp:

This amp is great and it gets way louder than I expected. It is so easy to use, you can get almost any tone you are looking for, and its small size makes it extremely portable. With the VFS5 footswitch you can program up to eight channels with any effect, modulation, volume and eq to your taste. If you are afraid its to small just mic it thru the PA. I have to say this little amp blew me away

Beware of the Snare

By Ed Stickler

from Atlanta, GA

Comments about Vox Valvetronix VT40+ 40W 1x10 Guitar Combo Amp:

This amp has a problem with producing unwanted noise in the form of a hiss (also called the snare effect). See the Vox.com website forum for more info on VT40+ Hiss. It limits your use of the gain and effects and you certainly wouldn't be happy with recording the sound produced. Very unfortunate because this could have been a great amp.

KIller Tone, Better price.

By Chris

from Portland, OR

Comments about Vox Valvetronix VT40+ 40W 1x10 Guitar Combo Amp:

I had my heart set on a vox night train for that true-tube tone and killer overhead. I didn't however have my heart set on the Night train's 700 dollar price tag. That brings me to this little guy. Even at screaming volumes, it remains true to the tube tone and I picked it up with a 5 channel foot switch for only 130 bucks! talk about big things in small packages! If you are a pedal board effects guy like me, I reccomend the manual mode on the amp. pair it with your favorite pedals and you are set for anything, even live gigs. Only drawback is a loud hiss if you have your effects of pedal board volume down and the amp cranked. make sure your input signal is good and loud to get the best sound. Overall, one of the best guitar purchases that I have ever made. I would highly recommend this amp to anyone who wants big tone sound(ac-30) with a small amp price!

Best Small Amp I've Played.....

By Michael Magallanes

from Charlotte, NC

Comments about Vox Valvetronix VT40+ 40W 1x10 Guitar Combo Amp:

First, this amp produces the sweetest and most authentic tube amp tone's I've ever heard in a solid state amp. It has 33 models to choose from...my favorites are the ones that emulate a Fender Twin and a Marshall...can bring tears. It has 3 different reverb types that are DEEP. It is also the smallest amp I can find over 20 watts (little beast is 60 watts!) that is this small with a big enough speaker (10 inch) to sound big . That makes it unpretentious looking and very easy to carry around. It also does not mask differences between different guitars like some of the modeling amps do....my SG sounds a lot different from my fat strat on it. If I could ask for more, I would like to have had more than 8 slots in the user bank and an effects loop. Still, I will not remove a star given the incredible tone and most important features I spoke of...this is my baby!!

Just got one!

By Timothy Smith

from New Carlisle Ohio

Comments about Vox Valvetronix VT40+ 40W 1x10 Guitar Combo Amp:

Just opened my Vox 40 today. Read the whole manual and am still a bit confused with all the setting but that's just a learning curve. Just bought a Les Paul and couldn't really afford to upgrade my amp as well. I was using a Fender champ30 with an RP50 Digitech pedal. Although I love the Fender sound (even transistors), this little Vox stares my Fender down, kicks dirt in it's face and then BLOWS IT AWAY! I'm finding some awesome presets and so far have been able to get as close to the "sound" I want than ever before. The tweekability of the settings and the very well designed circuitry makes the possibilities endless. Love the stock clean sound. Love the speaker. Love the ruggedness of the amp. After weeks of research I choose the Vox40 and for the money, you can't beat this thing! It will make a liar out of you if you try :) Couldn't be happier with this amp even if it had cost more....I still would have bought it!

Mind blowing

By Jeff Cliburn

from OKC, OK

Comments about Vox Valvetronix VT40+ 40W 1x10 Guitar Combo Amp:

OK, it's a beautiful world when you can get these tones for $250. In particular, the Blackface and ac15 are killer. Marshal type stuff is respectable. All in all this thing is a freak. You just don't hear smaller amps that have a really firm bottom like this. Effects are excellent considering they are built in. Sounds great with SC or HB pickups and behaves correctly when interacting with the amp/guitar choices (sc/jangly blackface, etc). There are only 2 caveats that I can see: 1 (and this is huge) there is no line out except for the headphone jack (which defeats the speaker)- terrible oversight. 2) you have to take the entire back off the amp to change the tube. It sounds great out of the box, but I would recommend swapping out the 12ax7 for a NOS as the amp architecture is such that the power section behaves like a tube amp using both sides of the dual triode as pre/gain. I'd go on a limb here and say that you could teach people using this amp as to what a tweed, blackface, AC 15, Ac 30 top boost is supposed to sound like. I'm not saying this renders your vintage AC 30 tube amp worthless, but I'd have the 80 watt model backstage when the afformentioned goes out while your on the road. In summation, I build tube amps and modify electric guitars. This purchase was for the purpose of have something really pristine to test guitars off of. However, it gets used a lot at gigs by several band members because of the incredibly excellent tones. If you buy the matching foot pedal, there is no reason why you couldn't do serious gigs with this amp- just have to stick a 57 on the grill..

Great tool for the gigging pro

By Ed Kliman

from Austin, Texas y'all

Comments about Vox Valvetronix VT40+ 40W 1x10 Guitar Combo Amp:

I needed a small, inexpensive modeling combo that would work for pit orchestra, recording sessions, clubs and whatever else. I play for a living and in a huge variety of settings and musical styles. I A/B'ed this unit next to the Peavey Vypyr 30 and a Line 6 amp of comparable size. Making a decision just on fundamental quality of guitar tone, this amp was head and shoulders above the others. There may be better automation or other features on the other amps, but the tone of this amp is what sold me. I got it out on a reasonably loud rock/funk gig last night (my first gig with this amp) and was pleasantly surprised at how well it did. It won't compare sonically with a Matchless or other high end tube amp, but at this price i'm not expecting it to. This amp is light AND loud. The variable power setting went a long way on selling me on this amp, this being a particularly useful feature for recording and pit orchestra/theatre gigs. Overall, this amp is a real pleasure to use. I'm writing this review for other working pros like me who are looking for a good, cheap workingman's amp that will cover almost any situation you find yourself in. Highly recommended.

Very Good Entry Amp

By Joe Evers

from Boston, MA

Comments about Vox Valvetronix VT40+ 40W 1x10 Guitar Combo Amp:

So I have had this amp for about 6 months, and played about a dozen shows with it. Anywhere from 30 to 120 people, and it didn't need to be mic'd once. The clean has a warm tube sound to it, and its the best channel to use any of the 22 built in effects. Although, i have never found any of the effects worth using, they may be useful to some. After clean is the cali clean, which is just pretty much clean with more treble and more breakup. I have never been able to find usable sound from US Blues, 2x12, Vox AC15 or AC30.. but then comes the UK Rock, which gets great classic rock tones. Followed then by UK Metal, which is very responsive to your picking, and is great for solos, and does very good with punk-ish metal, such as August Burns Red. US High Gain is my favorite, and does punk just perfectly, like Nirvana and Green Day. After are 2 more high gain channels, US Metal and BTQ Metal, which aren't great in my opinion, and have a lot of buzz. The attenuator is a great addition, making bedroom practicing easy, or crank it and easily play a show. The reverb is very natural sounding, and using just a touch sounds great. Overall, it's a great entry level gigging amp, and will help you find your sound.

Parallel in Tone plus effects

By Diego Rose

from Buffalo, NY

Comments about Vox Valvetronix VT40+ 40W 1x10 Guitar Combo Amp:

I've had this amp for almost two years. In the interim owned a Fender Deluxe Reverb 65' Reissue (for eight-nine months-it got too loud for neighbors). Now when comparing world famous nectarean tone of the Fender Deluxe '65 I got to be careful. I got to be careful. I'm taking time to write this review to facilitate the process of all concerned here (merchant and non-merchant which entails hobbyists, aspiring musicians, as well as our beloved shopkeepers who I also like to call experts and G.C. staff). The tone coming out of this 10" speaker is rich real!! As an example on several occasions I've sat and wondered if my tracks "rock instrumentals" were recorded from Fender Deluxe '65 (guitar God Paul Gilbert was generous as he always is to have heard a 2&1/2 minute composition at Mr. Big last summer in Buffalo) or from this equisitely beautiful, traditional and iconic little piece of equipment. And the best part of the Vox Valvetronix Vt40 Plus is a price that will have your wallet happy! Hands down!

Awesome amp!!

By Robert

from Chicago, Illinois

Comments about Vox Valvetronix VT40+ 40W 1x10 Guitar Combo Amp:

This is the first guitar amp I ever bought, and after trying a Marshall DSL40C and Blackstar HT Metal 5, the Vox is my favorite and perfect for practice. I'm amazed that this little amp can sound so good! In my opinion it's hard to beat for the price and versatility that it offers. It has exceeded my expectations, I thought I'd have to spend around a thousand dollars to get a great sounding combo amp, but I was wrong! It took me a little while to figure out all the different settings, but it's intuitive and very easy to operate. Set on "Basic", "US 2x12" with the treble and bass turned almost all the way up, mids at half way, and the metal distortion level at the 2 o'clock position played through a single coil Strat this amp sounds amazing. If you play a lot of metal and want deep, full, fat sounding distortion I would highly recommend this amp. It sounds great on the clean setting, too, very clear and crisp. I actually had trouble telling the difference between the all tube Marshall, Blackstar, and this amp. It's not exactly the same as an all tube amp, but it is very, very close, the warmth is definitely there. The built in effects are great too, beats spending a ton of money on pedals. I've had this amp for 2 years and it has never had any problems.

Comments about Vox Valvetronix VT40+ 40W 1x10 Guitar Combo Amp:

I use this for practice and small gigs. When I practice at home everyone else is asleep, simply adjust the watts plug in the headphones and I'm off without bothering anyone. And the FX are spot on best little amp I've owned in years
