Overview

In the 20 years since modeling amps were introduced to the world, their sound quality has advanced dramatically thanks to the progression of digital technology. Today, along with tube amps and transistor amps, modeling amps have earned a firm position among the amps chosen by guitarists. When Vox began work on the VX I and VX II, they had come to the conclusion that conventional modeling methods had been already been exhausted and could be taken no further.

In order to achieve advanced sound, a new method was developed. This innovative new method, known as VET (Virtual Element Technology), models the actual circuits and electrical components of an amplifier. This more sophisticated approach to modeling results in a more accurate and more articulate representation of the desired amplifier. Taking this process one step further, Vox also reengineered the conventional guitar cabinet, opting for a one-piece, sealed enclosure that enhances the sound quality and performance of the VX amplifier range.

The circuits at work in the VX I and VX II offer guitarists the best of both digital and analog amplifier design. The Virtual Element Technology at the heart of these amplifiers unlike any technology ever seen in guitar amplification is represents an evolutionary step for modeling amplifier technology.

-Proprietary VET (Virtual Element Technology) models the actual circuitry of the original amp
-The power amp stage employs an FET-equipped analog circuit and also models the sag and compression that is characteristic of classic amplifiers
-A sealed, one-piece speaker cabinet allows for overwhelming sonic performance and eliminates unwanted vibrations
-A unique bass-reflex design delivers an unprecedented amount of rich low end for an amplifier of this size
-The ABS cabinet material offers extremely lightweight, durability, and unique acoustical properties
-Ultra-lightweight design of 8.4lb. shatters expectations for guitar amps
-A total of eleven extremely accurate built-in amp models, including coveted vintage amps and sought-after boutique amps
-A total of eight reengineered built-in effects: four types of modulation and four types of delay/reverb
-Power level control allows you to lower the volume without sacrificing dynamics
-Eleven song presets that instantly simulate the sound of historic songs and famous guitarists
-Two customizable user programs
-JamVOX III modeling software is included (VX II only)
-USB audio interface function with ASIO support (VX II only)
-Editor/librarian software is provided, with support not only for PC, but also iOS devices (VX II only)
-Headphone output and AUX input for silent practice or playing along with your favorite tracks
-An optional VFS5 foot switch allows for expanded user programmability

New VET (Virtual Element Technology) modeling technology
This technology is referred to as œmodeling because it is based on the existence of an original amplifier. In the case of rare vintage amps, it is not unusual for individual units of the same model to sound different due to the passage of time and the varying environments in which they have been used. For these reasons, the selection of the original amp has a major influence on the accuracy and sound quality of a modeling amp. Since the analysis is based on the output sound, the condition of the amp is also very influential, and the unavoidable reliance on the human ear has an even greater effect. These factors make it difficult to say that the modeling accuracy extends to the tonal changes arising from the interaction between the tone controls, the volume, and the various components.

In order to resolve these issues, we completely rethought previous methods of modeling for the VX I and VX II. This led to the development of VET (Virtual Element Technology), which models the actual circuit of the original amp. An enormous amount of information about the vacuum tubes and each individual component was carefully analyzed in order to accurately reproduce the characteristics of the desired amplifier, as they were originally intended.

A diverse array of amps and effects allows for comprehensive sound-shaping
The eleven built-in amp models include VOX' legendary AC30 as well as also several high-gain, crunch, and clean sounds. A VX amplifier is the one unit you need to achieve a variety of coveted amplifier sounds ranging from classic vintage effects to costly boutique amps. A full complement of effects is also provided, including four types of modulation and four types of delay/reverb. The effects featured in the VX amplifier range have been also been reengineered to deliver more accurate and articulate tones.

The eleven preset programs take full advantage of these amps and effects to simulate the signature sounds of famous guitarists and classic songs.

A redesigned power amp stage, complete with an FET equipped analog circuit
Responsiveness, dynamic overdrive, and incredible sound quality ” for the guitarist, these are the unique attractions of a tube amp, and are the reason that tube amps have continued to be sought by guitarists for decades. These characteristics are significantly influenced by the power amp stage of the amplifier. A new, FET-based analog power amp was designed specifically for the VX I and VX II to accurately reproduce the characteristics of a tube amp. This power amp design employs technology inherited from the Valvetronix series and succeeds in reproducing the distinctive sag of a classic tube amp.

Unique bass-reflex design and sealed cabinet produce a rich low-end
In addition to the circuit design, Vox considered all aspects that impact the sound, paying careful consideration to the cabinet and speaker design.

In order to obtain a more authentic sound and produce sound more efficiently, Vox employed a uniquely designed-bass reflex structure in conjunction with a sealed, one-piece speaker enclosure. While providing an external appearance appropriate for a guitar amp, the cabinet's shape, the curvature of the front and back surfaces, and the internal reinforcement ribs have all been carefully designed to optimize the resonance. A conventional wooden baffle was chosen to retain the projection and tone of a classic guitar amp, while the cabinet is constructed from lightweight and durable ABS. The combination of these two materials yields a superior acoustical property that sounds superb yet retains easy portability. All of these unique elements work together to bring forth a level of sound quality that was previously unachievable with an amp of this class.

Optional footswitch expands the number of presets
Using the optional VOX VFS5 footswitch expands the number of unique user programs to eight on the VX I and VX II amplifiers.

I wrote a review shortly after I got this, but decided to come back & give a more in depth one. I've been practicing with this amp for awhile now & feel I've gotten to know this amp pretty well. I don't know how some of the other guys think this amp is so bad. Sure it's not perfect, but you can get some very nice sounds out of this amp. And for anyone in the beginner to intermediate stage of playing this is a great amp to get!

Here are some of the Pros:

-Someone new to guitar has no clue what all these different FX do & this amp has a good bit to give you an idea of what sounds certain FX make.
-You get a lot of different amps to try out starting from Clean, to some Rock crunch, to all the way Heavy Metal Distortion & for anyone who is pretty new to guitar will most likely enjoy the different sounds they can get with this amp.
-Hall Reverb! (before I got this amp I was playing through an Acoustic (the brand Acoustic) amp & it had no effects just a 3 Band EQ & got very loud very quickly.) It just felt like something was missing & that thing was reverb. I love it & the space it makes.
-Volume is very easily controlled with the power level or volume level. (Very nice so you can get a cranked amp feel without blaring the amp and deafening your ears/annoying your family or neighbors!)
-You can tweak the settings on the amp & save two to the personal presets A & B.

Cons:

-If you are on the preset amp models the volume can get pretty loud, but if you just tap the volume switch down it will knock the volume back down to better level to practice at & not annoy everyone.
-The effects aren't that strong. (But IMO they are still very good to learn about & sometimes less tweak-ability is more so you aren't fiddling with the amp for hours)
-Clean channels don't get that loud. In a gig environment I don't know how well that would work.

Great practice amp that will allow you to hone your skills & at a great price!

i bought this amp for one purpose....to play thru at very ,very low volume late at night..while watching tv....and i wanted something very portable and with delay effects and reverb.....this amp has all that....but i must say, this is the worst sounding amp i have ever heard.....if you like to jam on metal in your living room then you might well like the metal settings.....i was just looking for a good clean vox or fender tone........if i play it at very very low whisper volume it is barely ok...anything louder than a whisper and the tone becomes the worst possible sound.....the 4 x 10 fender setting is 8 times louder than the other settings and is the only one that will yield any kind of useable tone at all.........the vox ac30 setting sounds like a bad chorus pedal in a tin can....the ac30tb setting sounds like a wasp in a jam jar.....this really is....the worst amp ever made.....the effects are weak and there is no intensity setting for the effects.,.,..i wish i had bought a Fender mustang I....for the same money....had i not thrown the box away i would have returned this for a refund.....this amp is a dog with fleas....i imagine it will going in the garbage as soon as i can get a Mustang I.....i had one before....and let it go....it sounded like heaven compared to this evil creature.....shame on Vox....shame...shame...

Comments about Vox VX1SPL 15W 1x6.5 Limited Edition Digital Modeling Guitar Combo Amp:

I bought the VX1 from the MF 'return bin' with low expectations because I needed a replacement for a practice-weary, hot-rodded Pignose PG-20 and because it was inexpensive (my threshold for a throw-away practice amp...you know, 'beat it up and then give it to a deserving kid'). The sound quality of the VX1 was comparable to the Pignose, but its various 'models' made it somewhat more versatile (when they didn't make it sound like a 'clown circus' coming to town). That's the good news.

The bad news? When I ran it against my reference practice system (a hot rodded Kustom Defender 5H over the 10" driver/cabinet of an over-achieving Yamaha JX29 (hearing is believing), the VX1 came across like a plastic toy (sorry about that).

Bottom line: I'll keep (and eventually trash) the VX1 because it's 'better' than the Pignose I've dinated (not by much). But I'll use my preferred Kustom/Yamaha rig whenever it's convenient (which it often isn't, given the cost of a thermal cycle of a top-drawer set of valves in a 'quick riff' situation).

Rock on!

This thing weighs just a little more than a gallon of ice cream, and it's about the size of a bag of curtains.
But the great thing is that that plastic 'VOX' on the front is as big as the ones on their real amplifiers.

If you turn the knobs just right you can get it to sound just like the one in the sample video.

The only drawbacks are that when the user changes the amp sounds, the volume fluctuations, and there isn't a line out to plug straight into a pa, but this amp sounds great and is perfect for home Po practice

There are so many usable sounds on this amp, and very easy to use. Despite the 6.5" speaker, the sound quality is quite full and pleasing. It makes me want to just keep playing. Even the effects sound pretty good, although somewhat limited in their parameters. If you really want effects, you will probably run pedals in front anyway, so this is not a problem. I also love how LIGHT this thing is! Modeling technology really has come a long way. I would have loved to have one of these when I started playing 20+ years ago...

I bought one of these on a recommendation from a GC staffer and I got burned. The tone was very distorted, even using high end equipment to hook up to it. I connected my Gibson M4 Explorer up to this thing and the noise on all amp settings was awful. I thought it could be the cable so I plugged into a belt clip Honeytone amp and it wasn't my cable. The low end Honeytone blew this VX1 out of the water for tone. Volume is very poor too. Couple that with the amp sporadically shutting down due to power saving technology and you have a piece of garbage. I took it back today because I hated it. GC said it was defective and it probably was but never would I buy one of these again. Blech!

Sounds like other vox amp modeling amplifiers. It sounds good and is very portable and lightweight. I plan on gigging with this amp it will need to be used with a p.a. you can"t expect a lot of volume out of a 15watt amp but you can get good sounds out of this amp. Good little amp for the money. This amp is good for solo acts or trio with no drummer.
