Boys in the band

By Christopher Vargo

from OKC, OK

Comments about Vox ToneLab ST Guitar Multi Effects Pedal:

Took a "Field Trip" to Guitar Center with my twin 3-year-old boys to look for a replacement for my Zoom multi pedal. Being limited on time to discuss let alone try a variety of pedals, I briefly spoke with G/C rep check out the bang for the buck differences and grabbed the Vox unit. After spending a couple of hours trying out this unit, I felt absolutely ecstatic over my purchase. As stated in previous reviews, simple to use, not a mind boggling amount of options, what it does have is very good, the amp selections are superb, and for the price, I can't see getting a better product.

Vox tonelab ST

By 'ol blues geezer

from Oregon

Comments about Vox ToneLab ST Guitar Multi Effects Pedal:

Like one of the other reviews, I was looking for a quality effects pedal, with a not so sterile sound...and ease of use. I have pedals galore, and have been throught an assortment of multi-effects pedals - Boss (three), Zoom (three), Line 6, Carl Martin. Always looking for "the sound". Sound familiar guys?(and gals) Anyway, not one to plug a product unless it delivers, and this one did. Not only can you preset a bazillion things, you can instantly tweak it while performing,(maybe acoustics are wrong for sound you had programmed), and when you switch away from that program, it resets to your original sound. Easy, easy, easy...all I can say. Worth the smackers. Not everything for everyone...what is? But if ya can't find a sound...ya ain't looking hard. Peace brothers.

Great addition to my setup

By John

from Portland, OR

Comments about Vox ToneLab ST Guitar Multi Effects Pedal:

It's 3 am and I'm sitting here playing my guitar. That about sums it up. I've had my Tonelab ST for a few weeks now and I love it. My digital combo amp can't produce sounds this warm. The amp and cabinet models and effects -- and the ease with which you can dial them up -- are awesome. It feels like I bought a studio full of equipment. Warm, rich, accoustic tube sounds that you can fuzz up, compress, or distort and go from nice and clean to edgy or overdrive with a tip of the pedal. Or take already distorted tones and add a really nice wah. Best of all, it's a snap to connect to my computer so I can save sounds and have an instant backing band (from Sonar Home Studio)and can jam at all hours. Best sound I've heard played straight into headphones -- my wife and kids appreciate that at 3 am!

Best Multi Effect pedal for price!!

By David

from Apopka, FL

Comments about Vox ToneLab ST Guitar Multi Effects Pedal:

Just bought this about a week ago and studied and jammed for a long time looking for a quality multi effect pedal. I am not much into having a million pedals to work with but I was really looking for a nice warm tube, overdrive sound. THis pedal was the best I found. It even has a real tube built in. I am in love with the amp selections and different selectors to use. These model real amps and effects and they sound AMAZING! Small pedal, and doesn't give you a crazy assortment of different effects; but if you are looking a quality, warm toned pedal get this pedal trust me!! I LOVE IT!!

Great pedal for the money

By Matt Myers

from St. Louis

Comments about Vox ToneLab ST Guitar Multi Effects Pedal:

I went to Guitar Center about a month ago and was there to just buy strings but this glowing thing kept catching the corner of my eye.. Like a moth to a light I hastily went over and grabbed a guitar and plugged it in. I was amazed by the tone this thing produces. I run this through a marshall half stack solid state and this pedal alone can make your cheaper solid state have the warmth and tone of a much more expensive tube amp. Another neet feature about this is the USB audio device capabilities. If you have Cakewalk or Cubase or something along those lines you can use this divice directly on your computer for recording. Also you can store and map out effects on the software available from Vox's website. All and All a great pedal for the money. I would recommend this Pedal to anyone looking for a good multi effects pedal.

Very Good Pedal Overall

By Sebby

from NYC, NY

Comments about Vox ToneLab ST Guitar Multi Effects Pedal:

I play a lot of shows in NYC and like an idiot I left this pedal after having it for 6 months in a back pack which I left in a cab. Believe it or not, it turned up (broken) a couple of weeks later, BUT I bought the pro coverage so I'm going to replace it today. The best thing about this pedal hands down are the tones you can get from it. I was looking to replace my old Korg AX1G pedal so I started reading about popular pedals from digitech, boss, etc. I did my research online and when I got to the store I tried this and a few other notable pedals. Most of them sounded very processed. The Boss GT-10 for example was good, but it didn't sound natural. Plus I don't think ANYONE will ever make good use of the ridiculous number of effects they have on that thing. Granted I was playing everything I tested through some fantastic expensive Marshall head when I got to Guitar Center, but the distorted and especially the clean on the Tonelab ST sounded ridiculously amazing just playing with the preset patches. The built in tube gives it a great natural tone. Tone is more important to me than a ton of features, though it does have some cool effects to it which you can mess with and you can assign a lot of stuff to the expression pedal like volume, wah, pitch bender, but again the natural tones I believe is the best thing it has to offer. I designed my own tones, but I still have yet to find the perfect tone just because there are so many amp models and cabinets to choose from before you even get into the EQ, so that can take some time, but you can get so many tones from it to match most styles. I use it both for recording straight in (while telling myself I'm really micing a vox amp) and for live shows. As far as playing live goes, the one notable drawback which I have to mention is that it you can't assign your saved patches/tones to different footswitches. Obviously it's a more compact and affordable model than the larger LE, so it only has two footswitches which are just for toggling up and down through your saved patches/tones one at a time. So basically it's really not convenient or conducive for playing live unless you use the same one or two tones throughout your whole set. On the plus side, the included software for quickly uploading and downloading your patch/tone setup to your computer and back makes customizing your setup very easy and quick so that you can design a specific setup for a live show if you're meticulous about it. Plus you can swap tones with other Tonelab ST users online this way. I took off one star from my rating because of this lack of ideal live functionality, but make no mistake that at $200 this pedal is a fantastic buy in my opinion. Who knows, maybe if more people buy this then there will be more customized patches to go around but because it's so new there's still not much out there to share and find.

Nice pedal for the money

By BK

from Knoxville, Tn

Comments about Vox ToneLab ST Guitar Multi Effects Pedal:

As everyone else has stated I too was looking for a good if not great pedal to run thru my tube amp. I work a regular job during the week but just about every weekend i am gigging in the area. So my set-up time has to be quick..so after trying every multi-effects pedal none to man I thought i would try this pedal out..I was surprised how well it sounded! The tube helps out my sound greatly. The only downside (for me) was the size of the expression pedal. I use it just for a volume pedal and use a crybaby for my wah stuff. If you are looking for a good multi-effects pedal give this one a try and hey if you dont like it GC's return policy is great.

Love this Pedal

By Peter O'Neal

from Dayton, Ohio

Comments about Vox ToneLab ST Guitar Multi Effects Pedal:

THis little VOX pedal is so portable (fits in the side pocket of my Fender deluxe gig bag), a superb tone producer, and (even though quite small) features a decent expresion pedal. I would like to actually give 6 stars for the fantastic clean AND distorted tones I get from this thing through my Fendrer Blues Junior III.... I would give a 4 for the features. Why the 4? Switching from tone to tone is a bit cumbersome, and since the effects are on just three knobs, you are a bit limited in terms of how many you can have going at once. I guess the Tonelab ST's bigger brother, would be more vesitile, but the ST is all I need and it's $200 cheaper! So....yeah...overall, I totally LOVE this pedal and highly recommend it.

Best Purchase I Have Ever Made

By Dean Junkans

from Minneapolis, Minnesota

Comments about Vox ToneLab ST Guitar Multi Effects Pedal:

I have owned the Vox ToneLab ST for about 2 years and it has not let me down yet. First off, lets go over the features. This thing has literally every guitar effect you could ever need. Chorus, flanger, delay, reverb, phaser, octave, uni-vibe, if you can name it, this has it. Some of my favorite features are the built in tuner that works flawlessly, and the built in adjustable noise reducer (works great for higher volumes). The only thing that could be a little better is the wah pedal, but if you don't have a separate one this one still works fine. I usually use the pedal as a volume pedal. As far as construction, this is the best built pedal I have ever had. I have carried this thing all over the place, dropped it, even spilled drinks on it, and it still works the same as it did on day one. Now, for the actually sound of the pedal itself, AMAZING. I have played this pedal out of a small solid state Marshall before, and it sounded like I was playing out of a vintage plexi at 3/4 volume. You can get a light acoustic sound out of this, or a screaming metal tone and anywhere in between. I have been able to almost perfectly replicate the tones of Angus Young, Slash, EVH, and many other guitarists without even touching the nobs on my amp. And the best part is that you can save all of these settings and switch back and forth whenever you want. I have used this through several different amps and it sounds great no matter what. I have even plugged this directly into a PA system and it worked great. This pedal is well worth the money if you are looking into multi effects pedals. I would honestly pay $400 for this if that was the price. It is just that good. GET THIS PEDAL.

Best Bang for your Buck

By Sean

from Poway CA

Comments about Vox ToneLab ST Guitar Multi Effects Pedal:

Had this pedal for about 3 months and am still finding new sounds. Ive never felt the need to write a review for anything until now, the ToneLab ST has more amps and effects than I know what to do with. Sounds amazing direct out into headphones and allows you to play at anytime in the day. I also play it through my Fender amp and they work flawlessly together thanks to the amp switch on the back. Definitely the best pedal for the price

Great Deal/Great Tones

By Pierre

from Scranton, PA

Comments about Vox ToneLab ST Guitar Multi Effects Pedal:

Great product for studio or live applications. Warm sounds and fast, powerful editing capabiliites. Under a rugged carriage is a 12AX7 tube, and that makes the Tonelab ST the best sounding multi-effects unit around. Great distortions, crunches, and cleans, excellent tuner, nice phaser, wah, filtertron, and delay for two hundred bucks? You can waste that on a "boutique" stompbox that only does one thing and one thing only. The Tonelab ST is reasonably priced, loaded with great sounds, easy to use, and ruggedly built. I'm going to buy another to have as a backup. Sounds GREAT through an amp, mixer, recorder, and headphones. You will have to tweak and experiment for a while to really nail the tones you want, but you should be able to start twisting knobs and getting good sounds right out of the box. Also, presets sound pretty lousy (as they do on ALL multi-effects devices), but you can use them to start sculpting your own tones. Vox really catered to working musicians on a budget with this one. You'll never have more fun playing at 1:00AM through a raging Marshall half-stack (via headphones of course) without waking the neighborhood!

Sounds great, but I question the need for that "glowing tube"...

By Mike

from winchester, va

Comments about Vox ToneLab ST Guitar Multi Effects Pedal:

First off, this unit does produce some very realistic, gritty amp tones. I'm not into effects, but I am into the sound of a good tube amp. This unit does pretty good in that area. Digital modeling has come a long way and although there are still those who believe they can "hear" the difference between a recorded Marshall JCM 800 and a recorded model of the same amp, they are also probably the same people who think they can hear the difference between a 1958 stratocaster and a 1961 stratocaster. In other words, they can't, but that doesn't stop them from saying they can. I also have a Line 6 Floor Pod, the original one that is no longer in production. The Vox Tonelab ST does seem more tube-like in it's amp simulations, but be aware before you purchase this that the "glowing" 12AX7 tube is not really glowing. There's an orange LED in the socket that illuminates the tube when you turn the unit on. No, I'm not joking. Also, some of the presets still function with the tube removed. I wouldn't say the tube in this unit is a complete gimmick, seeing that orange LED behind the tube is a bit discouraging. Still, this is a good product and sounds amazing. I just wish they didn't feel the need to fake the appearance of a glowing tube, especially considering VOX is a reputable company that doesn't need to fake anything.

Quite a nice little package for the casual player

By Joele

from Fresno, CA

Comments about Vox ToneLab ST Guitar Multi Effects Pedal:

The ToneLab really attempts to be the ultimate all in one unit, and in a lot of ways it reaches those goals. Before owning a real tube amp, I was interested in all the "amp model" buzz going around. I wanted to make my cheap solid state amp sound like AC30, or a Fender Twin, and this pedal seemed like an easy solution, combined with the fact it offers a number of effects I needed and a volume/expression pedal. For most casual players, I think you'll find some serious fun in the vast possibilities and combination of tonal shaping this unit offers. Nothing in this unit sounds bad by any means, and some settings will leave you quite impressed. For the serious player however, I think you will quickly out grow this unit as I have. After finally braking down and buying a tube AC15, there wasl no contest. My real AC15 is a world away from the model on this unit, in terms of dynamic response, natural brake up, and so on. Probably no surprise there. However, I still found a great deal of use for the ToneLab as a multi effects unit (turning the amp models off). It is very easy to create and edit your own presets on the fly, and the volume pedal is very useful on its own or in combination with the effects. All in a very small and compact size. As I mentioned, this a great tool for casual players, however for the serious gigging musician, you will find the on board effects and tuner are still no match for a quality dedicated pedal, the overall construction is better suited for home/studio use. Mine has been on the road quite a bit, and been under heavy day to day use, and while my boss pedals show no sign of ever slowing down, this unit is already falling apart. The internal lights display was the first to go out, then the volume pedal broke. This thing is NOT built for hard day to day use. And that is a real shame, because I trust the VOX brand a great deal, and for the price of this unit, I had hopped to have something that would last me a long time. However, my ToneLab is falling apart after a little more then one years use. But like I said, for the casual user, they may not face these same problems. For the serious gigging musician, make the investment and buy the amp you really want (not a model) and the dedicated pedals for the effects you need. You will sound better and you will have much higher quality tools to work with.

natural multi pedal

By Carmen

from rva

Comments about Vox ToneLab ST Guitar Multi Effects Pedal:

I've had a few multi fx pedals (digitech rp200, boss me20) and of all of them, this is by far the best one. as far as being easy to use, i find them all pretty navigable, but as far as sound goes this one kills them all. it's hard to find a good multi fx pedal that doesn't make your guitar sound like a robot, but this one really does it with the tube/valvetronix. love all the different amp models and all your main fx are there. plus it's pretty small, and is made mostly of metal which surely makes it the most durable of all the multi fx pedals. if you're trying to decide between this and equivalents (digitech rp355 and boss me25) go with this one!!! you won't regret it!

A killer tone machine... period

By FREDRICK FAZZIO

from Hawley, PA

Comments about Vox ToneLab ST Guitar Multi Effects Pedal:

This thing just plain rocks!!! The quality sounds that come out of this thing are just fantastic. Far more real sounding, not just colored up with digital etc... Real tones and sounds that you can use. If you plan to gig with this be ready to get your patches in sync with your set list order, the program changes are sequential. ( To go from # 23 to #57 you have to press the up button x # of times. If you use the USB interface from the VOX unit to a PC, then you can change instantly to whatever patch you want, small thing and not really a problem for me.) Metal construction. Awsome song presets too. Some of the songs I already play / played in a band, and the song presets are very well done. Was playing a vintage GSP21 Legend for a long time, bought this to replace it, and i absolutely love it. EZ interface and top notch sound quality amke this an absolute baragin. Go out now and buy this unit, you wont be disappointed....

Comments about Vox ToneLab ST Guitar Multi Effects Pedal:

This is a pretty decent sounding, versatile pedal. Good range of effects and features. The bypass is somewhat idiosyncratic, requiring pushing both up/down bank switches at the same time. A third switch that does this would have been much nicer. The supplied presets are a good sampling of what the box can do, but tweaking them will be necessary in general. Tones are pretty good, with flexible amp and cab selections. Effects are also good. As a "Deal of the Day" this was an exceptional value. A good "all in one" box for someone just getting started or who wants a small pedal footprint.
