Overview

Drawing on Joe Satrianis knowledge accumulated from decades of groundbreaking performances, both live and in the studio, VOX unveils a breakthrough in guitar tone in The Satchurator distortion pedal. Designed to Satrianis exact specification, the Satchurator produces Satrianis signature tone and adds features and improvements never before combined in a distortion pedal.
After almost a year of painstaking experimentation and road testing, Satriani and the VOX R&D team discovered the secrets to capturing the ultimate distortion tone in a modern-day effects pedal. The Vox Satchurator is capable of very high gain levels, but operates more quietly and musically than many other modern distortion pedals. It also preserves the tone and pick attack regardless of style, while providing distortions from subtly distorted blues tones through classic rock and shred.
"The Satchurator is the most musical, most dynamic, multi-function distortion pedal I've ever played through" says Satriani. "This little red box is a monster tone generator. Following my specifications without compromise, and adding design innovations I never thought possible, the VOX team has delivered exactly what I need for the stage and studio—a distortion pedal that responds to my touch, and produces a big, natural, harmonically rich tone compatible with any guitar/pedal/amp configuration."

Features
  • Analog distortion pedal designed under the complete supervision of Joe Satriani
  • Controls for Gain, Tone and Volume
  • 'More' gain boost switch enables two footswitchable distortion sounds in one pedal. This gain boost is dramatic when gain knob is set low, and is a subtle solo boost when gain knob is set to maximum.
  • 'Pad' switch pads down input to allow for high gain pedals (such as modern wahs) placed before Satchurator. Up is pad 'ON'. Down is pad 'OFF' for full Satchurator effect.
  • High gain, low noise design provides vintage to modern distortion sounds
  • Dynamic circuit is highly responsive to rolling off the guitar's volume and preserves the guitar's high end when the volume is rolled off.

The only way I can describe the sound of this pedal is "clean distortion". So much of the tone of your guitar comes through, even at the highest gain levels. As an added cool feature, with the gain set all the way down, the pedal still gives you "classic rock" distortion. I've never heard a pedal that sounds so much like the kind of distortion you'd hear on a professional recording. Another cool thing is that this is the first pedal where all the knobs at 12 o'clock is darn near perfect. The volume or level knob at 12 perfectly matches the bypass volume. Get this.

I have mixed opinions on this pedal. I play in a few cover bands and my core sound is a bluesy Fender Clean amp with some OD pedals. I planned on using this pedal for stuff that requires more gain and a harder edge. The Satchurator definitely fits the bill when I'm playing with my 3-piece band (where I'm the only guitar player). It fills up the space nicely with it's thick, compressed tone. However, when playing in two guitar bands, I get lost in the mix. My solos don't cut through at all, and even rhythm playing seems too flat when rolling off the guitars volume knob. I've tried bumping up the treble, but this pedal seems to shine on the bass-side of the tone knob. All in all, it's just okay and probably depends on your band's set up. I'd give it 5-stars for a 1-guitar band - covering everything from Satch to Zep to ZZ Top - it's fantastic. However, it's way too muddy to compete with a rhythm guitar player. Since Satch rarely seems to have a second guitar player, maybe this makes sense???

Gets you there...ts808 on steroids

By Chris

from SC

The other guitar player in our band rarely used his, so I decided to give it a try. Now am wondering why he never uses it. Really pushes your amps tubes into the true overdrive distortion. One of the most musical sounding distortions I have ever heard. I love it. I play strats and this will "round out" the single coils and will make them ooze TONe. Can use this for any type of music. We play lots of rock and blues and this can flat out nail Texas Flood tones with the Gain all the way down. Its a ts808 on steroids...I guess you could say it picks up where the holy grail left off. Will be adding one to my pedal board.

SNACHERATER !!!!!!

By Jay

from clovis ca.

I WAS SOOOO dissappointed. I had been waiting to get my hands on this thing for 3 months. When it arrived I plugged it into my AC30 . . . It has wayyyyyyyy to much gain for me. Maybe it works for Satch . . but, I'm not tryin to be someone else. Even on its lowest setting . . the only way to get anything good out of it was to roll off my volume. Anyway . . .I'll be taking it back.

lovin it

By Dante

from San Jose, CA

After reading lots of reviews, I finally got it! I have a fender hs strat (mexican) running through a fender hot rod deville. (i think it's important to mention that in each review, because it gives people a reference point, plus some of the negative reviews i've read come from people with solid state amps). The deville sounds great clean, so I knew my starting point was solid. I plugged it in, put the gain up, tone down, and wow!. It was a tasty crunch. I spent the next 2 hours playing a variety of styles (satch, vh, srv, etc.) and I could find a good tone for each. Although I love my amp's subtle distortion for some stuff, this thing takes it over the edge. Now i feel like i have the whole spectrum from clean, to overdrive, to serious distortion. I could only imagine that a les paul, or something with a real good humbucker could sound even better. The more button is cool, cause it add that little extra sustain for leads.

Best Distortion Pedal I've ever owned

By mattriani

from Arizona

All I can say is that I couldn't put my guitar down. This without a doubt is the most versatile, well thought out, incredible sounding distortion I have ever owned or played through. There is nothing bad about this pedal. Even the pad switch has a cool use if playing through a wah...makes the wah sound fuller. Awesome.

Best Pedal Ever

By Professor Panic

from Seattle, Washington

I have played for over 50 years now. I have played with some of the best effects pedals around, then and now. This pedal amazed me. It is so clean yet so dirty. As stated before on other reviews even with the effect off the pedal brings out notes I knew where there but had not ever heard before. When you first try it out you think what is this all about? Then it grabs you that when you are stretching that note off the fret board, it did not fade away it just keeps coming. I have recorded with it and live performance, outstanding!

As advertised.

By JC

from Oregon

I'm a little late to the Satchurator party, but here's my take. I'm usually disappointed with distortion pedals. Not this time. I'm running this into the clean channel of a JSX head. I don't feel like I'm sacrificing tone at any distortion level. The "More" button is a nice touch. Like some other reviewers, I've found it adds a more dramatic impact when the gain setting is dialed back just a bit. Still, you can get a little "more" even at max gain. Seems to play nice with my Bad Horsie 2. Well built. My only gripe... Come on VOX, just charge the extra $$ and include an AC adapter.

SEARCH IS OVER

By the 9

from California, Ca.

I play a Les Paul and Telecaster through a Fender vintage Blues Deluxe reissue. The clean is well, Fender clean. Pristine. But for rockin', the drive in that thing doesn't cut it. I have played ohhhh....about 20 different distortion pedals trying to come up with the best one of course. Well, search over. The Vox Satchirator is quiet, transparent, deep, chunky, massive, the list goes on. You can just get a little grit on or full shred. I do believe playing in front of a tube amp is the ticket. Good pickups help. I use Seymour Duncans usually. Vox, great job. Makes me want to check out your other pedals now.

Oh man, The Satchurator!

By CJ Coan

from Kansas City, Missouri

I've been working hard this last year on solidifying my sound. My lead tones in the bands I play for are known for being smooth, and tasteful, yet having that rock crunch to them when I need it. No pun intended, but I like to have a very saturated tone a lot of times. My pedal of choice for the last year has been an old Ibanez Soundtank PowerLead. The thing has amazing distortion tone for lead, but for my rhythm aspect of my tone, it just wasn't where I wanted it. So onto my rig and how this pedal fits in: I'm playing a Schecter Tempest Custom as my main axe, running through a Kustom wAv 212 combo. I play in a Christian Praise Rock band, a church worship team, and an Alternative Hard Rock band. So I need some versatility on my board. FEATURES: The Satchurator has that classic Joe Satriani tone, depending on how you dial the tone/gain settings. You can get anything from a slight crunch, to blues area gain, to all but high gain/metal distortions. Basically, if you have the gain set at moderate tones on this pedal, using the "more" switch will take your gain to 10. Also it boosts your signal a little bit, just enough to cut through a band for a smooth solo. the Satch and Vox did a GREAT job on this part. This pedal all around is a winner. Not to mention the vintage paint job and look of it is AWESOME. QUALITY/RELIABILITY: I wouldn't worry about this pedal breaking on me. The footswitch buttons are liquid-smooth upon use. I was amazed and pleased with this. Being in a worship team, nothing kills an intimate worship song like the pop of a footswitch button being activated. If it was broken or stolen, I would buy another, hands down. LOOK AND FEEL: As I said above, the vintage look of it with the knobs and the coloring is great. It's not any heavier then your normal pedals. CONCLUSION: This is the best distortion pedal I've ever used. Don't hesitate to check one out. This is not the typical tinny, treble-filled cheap distortion that is out on the market today. It has vintage tone, look, and SO worth the money.
