Overview

Way back in 1961, VOX rolled out the AC4 amplifier. Nearly 50 years later, VOX is pleased to announce the AC4TV”the all-tube practice amp with remarkable self control. This up-to-date Class A version retains the distinctive EL84 power tube of the original AC4 amp and features a 12AX7 powered pre-amp, all driving a custom-made Celestion 10" speaker. The sophisticated sound is unmistakably VOX, delivering that distinctively British top-end tone.

Simple and sexy, the AC4TV wears its pedigree proudly. The cabinetry features the same TV-front design first used on the classic 1958 AC15, and still in use on today's AC15H1TV Heritage Series. One of the challenges confronting an all-tube amp is retaining a full tone at lower volumes. To solve this issue, the AC4TV features a built-in power attenuator, with 4W, 1W, and 1/4W output levels”ensuring you never lose that classic tube tone, even at the lowest listening levels.

The AC4TV also adds a 16-ohm speaker output, allowing you to add an additional cabinet and state your sonic signature with authority.

Watched/listened to all the demos on you-tube and elsewhere of this amp and got very interested. Unfortunately there was almost no example of someone playing a Les Paul or similar through it for a hard rock/metal sound. If you are looking for an amp to shred through with a sound like late 80s speed metal, this won't do without a solid state pedal in front of it. However, if you are looking for a more classical dark growl, roar and punch sound like Tony Iommi or a powerful straight ahead hard rock sound like Angus Young or Joe Perry you can get there with your Les Paul plugged straight in, no pedals required. The amp is very responsive to the player and the guitar. The 10" Celestion speaker is clearly better than typical for this price range, however if you are looking for some heavy thump in your sound, you will need an external cab with 12s in it--this could be due to the closed-back design. It does sound great for bright chimey strat/tele sounds, however. At the 4 watt setting, it is very loud for anyone but 16 year old mountain dew freaks. At 4 watts you can get nice clean round chimey sounds at bedroom level from your strat. It does break up quickly, and at the 1/4 watt setting you can go into full marshall meltdown at a level that just drowns out the acoustical sound of your guitar--absolutely great for people who still want to be able to hear when they turn 50. You might think that you won't get a good thick sound at such a low level. Not so here. There are a lot of great amp modeling devices out there, speaker simulators etc., but there just is no substitute for the interaction between a player, guitar, and a real tube amp. The amp is part of the instrument, and now you can have the real thing at a sane volume level, and at an amazing price. I used to spend hours dialing around on my pedalboard trying to create "my sound." Now I just plug in and spend the time actually playing. What a concept... If you are on the fence, just do it-you won't be disappointed unless what you are really looking for is an AC30 or Marshall with multi-channel operations, eq, and built in reverb etc.

Bought this amp thinking that tube amps are the only way to go; Period. I own a valveking and love it. So, I bought this for a practice amp, hoping for the best sound available. After playing it for two days and several hours; had to take it back. The only sound that came out of this amp was that british overdriven sound. The only way to get a clean soud was to turn down to 3 or 4, but then had zero volume for practicing.I love Vox, so bought a Vt40+ instead of this one. MUCh beter in all capacities, save an overdriven sound. - Pros: BEAUTIFUL looking amp. How can you beat that retro white TV look? You can't. Definitley has that 'british" overdrive sound, and you can play it at 1watt or a .25 watt - Cons: One sound and one soudn only comes out of this amp. If you want anythign other than mud, stay away.

Comments about Vox AC4TV 4W 1x10 Tube Guitar Combo Amp:

For the money this is an exceptional amplifier. It takes pedals well (the exception to this is reverb) It sounds great. It is extremely simple to use. The 1/4 watt power setting allows you to get distortion from the power tubes at a volume that won't get the cops called. It also cleans up nice and has that chime Vox tone. I like using to record cleaner funk rhythms and loops. I like the fact that it has a speaker out line that you can use to power an extension cabinet. I hook it up to a 1 x 12 cab I have loaded with Jensen P12 N Alnico and it sounds just marvelous. I only have two complaints. The tone control when all the way engaged muffles things a bit much. Also a little more headroom might have been nice. it almost tends to break up a little too fast. These are minor complaints and more an issue of preference I think. There are so many bad transistor amps out there that are in the same price range. This is a really great amp that is a fantastic starter amp for a beginner. It doesn't have enough ooompf to get over a drummer and a full band but for solo performance in a small to medium sized room it works great. I really like it for recording too. I have two other high gain heads and this is a nice when i want to record without having any fuzz on the signal and still have the volume control all the way up on the guitar. Wonderful for Beatelesque and Funk tones, either through the onboard 1 x 10 speaker or running through an extension cabinet.

    great amp!

Comments about Vox AC4TV 4W 1x10 Tube Guitar Combo Amp:

I LOVE this amp... The sound is really nice; you get the warm, yet clear tube amp sound in a small, affordable package. It also can get pretty loud considering the wattage; I've had different amps with higher wattages that don't get as loud. It's light enough to take on the bus, but powerful enough to play for a decent sized venue.. Best thing I ever bought!!

    Good amp overall

    By WC Pond

Comments about Vox AC4TV 4W 1x10 Tube Guitar Combo Amp:

After my wife complained that my current amp, AC15,was too loud, I got it in my head that I needed a smaller wattage amp. Being a Vox fan, I focused on the AC4TV. For its 4 watts, it is still pretty loud. It will cut the mustard for jam sessions, especially if you don't feel like lugging a 50 pound amp to your buddy's house. The retro look is awesome; right from the 1960s. Build quality is good for the price point. Tone wise, it has clear tube tone, but not as "chimey" as my AC15. It also gets "boxy" sounding when you dial back to the 1 watt and 1/4 watt settings and the tone isn't nearly as lively. (Read online that switching out the stock speaker for a Greenback helps tremendously.) Reverb would help. This amp breaks up early, so you can get some crunch at a lower volume. I've paired this amp with a Vox Stomp Lab which gives it more tonal depth. If you are looking to get into tube amps on the cheap, this is a good start.

Sweet Little VOX Amp with Nice Tone! Great Value!

    By CHARLES FLETCHER

    from WA

Comments about Vox AC4TV 4W 1x10 Tube Guitar Combo Amp:

I had tried a couple of other VOX amps and didn't care for the shrill sound and this little number was recommended to me for being a warmer and indeed it does. Pleasing tones with both single coils and humbuckers and plenty loud for practice at home. I like the switchable 3 power output settings to get more of a bluesy sound at reasonable sane levels. As well, if you like, there are after-market upgrade options (Mercury Magnetics) and speaker upgrades (10" Celestion Alnico Blue or Gold), but I think it's just fine the way it is. Made in Vietnam the same as the hand-wired series. Excellent Value!!

    Really beatiful warm sound

Comments about Vox AC4TV 4W 1x10 Tube Guitar Combo Amp:

I have been using a small 30W Marshall solid state amp for my home playing. It was ok, but I always felt as if it was a little harsh. I was recently at a Guitar Center, and I saw the little Vox, so I tried it. The sound was superior in every way. The tube technology makes such a difference. With this amp turned to the 1/4 Watt setting, it is just a beautiful sound. It also sounds amazing when recording it from a mic. I am now a Vox player forever.

    Awesome tone..

    By James Scovel

Comments about Vox AC4TV 4W 1x10 Tube Guitar Combo Amp:

I record and Play guitar. This all Tube amp sounds awesome for recording. You can make it have a Jazz sound or an AC/DC Rock sound. I Play through a Gibson Les Paul in through a volume and a crybaby pedal, into the Holy Grail reverb and BBE sonic Maximizer. Sounds like a 4x10 cabs with the bbe. So far no problems. Just right for a small amp on the weight. if you are tried of picking up the 4x10 speaker cabs, and you get an awesome sound.

    Best sounding amp under $500

    By David Young

    from Atlanta, GA

Comments about Vox AC4TV 4W 1x10 Tube Guitar Combo Amp:

I've had this little guy for a few years now, and it still surprises me how incredible it sounds. The tone is perfect, and when paired with a large cab, this guy shines. I run mine through a 1972 Fender 2x15 and the tone is unmatchable at this price range. The cleans are perfectly warm with enough of that vox crisp to warm your soul. Can't recommend it enough. I've gigged with it as well alongside a Marshall JCM900 and a Fender twin verb and if mic'd, it SOMEHOW pushes enough to keep up. But in the studio is where it really shines. If you're considering buying this, do yourself a favor and just do it. You won't be disappointed.

Comments about Vox AC4TV 4W 1x10 Tube Guitar Combo Amp:

This is an incredible bargain and a sweet sounding amp. The 3-way wattage switch makes it. I can crank the volume and just control the distortion from my guitar. Half a watt for practicing, or 4-watts for a gig. Incredible dynamic responsiveness at any setting. You won't be sorry.

    Vox ac4TV

    By David Arlen

    from New Port Richey, Florida

Comments about Vox AC4TV 4W 1x10 Tube Guitar Combo Amp:

Just bought this amp today at Guitar Center. I've been researching 4-5 watt tube amps to use for my home studio because my 30 watt crate was way too loud and at low volume you did not get good tone. Chose the vox after playing four or five amps at my guitar center. My sales tech, Ben De Angelo, encouraged me to play both single coil and humbucker guitars on each amp I tried so I could see how my four electrics would sound. I'm very happy that I chose the Vox. Have played it for an hour straight and am still smiling. No, this amp doesen't have all the bells and whistles but for the price you get a terrific sound. The attenuator is what really sold me on this amp. Three power levels, all with great tube tone.

    Great sound, very good attenuation

    By Nick Perry-Guetti

    from Portland, OR

Comments about Vox AC4TV 4W 1x10 Tube Guitar Combo Amp:

This amp is loud enough to rock out on at home, and I don't think the attenuator kills the excellent, bluesy tone at all. This tone is sort of dark, but also with a nice glassy quality, very sweet.
