The Vox AC100 Classic Plus 100w head is an EL34-powered line up that marries the classic VOX tone and chime of rock and roll legend with a versatile high-gain channel that does it all from the 50s to tomorrow. Sound big? You bet. What do 50 years of classic VOX sonic history sound like? Play one.
This is the first all-tube head I've purchased, and I can say that It will probably be the last. This thing can seriously do it all. It goes from sparkling cleans on the first channel, but when you crank the gain you get a crunchy classic AC30ish tone. Then on the second channel, with the proper tweaking, you get this really thick, smooth, marshally type distortion. This amp definitely can do it all, and at the same time, it won't break your bank.

After playing the 50 watt version at the local store, I loved the tones available in this amp. I bought the 100 watt version for the extra headroom...believe me there's plenty of that. I've been playing a Marshall JCM900 for the past 3 years, and it's been ok. However, I despised the ol' Marshall's clean channel, so I began searching for solutions. This is when I discovered the AC100CPH. This amp's clean channel is as close to the AC30 "top boost" you can find without buying an AC30. The amp's reverb is usable, but somewhat shallow, but if you want "soaked" reverb you'd be looking at a Fender, anyway. The distortion channel on this amp could be used in a number of ways. With a slight gain, I found some "Angus-like" tones. Slightly more gain, and I began to discover some "STP" howl. Tweaking the EQ, and cranking the gain knob to max, that elusive "Pumpkins" sound came out. Cranking gain and volume on channel 2 might kill someone (or at least their hearing). This could easily have been a 3-channel amp because of the "fat" switch's tone shaping. The problem is that this channel's tone seems almost TOO fat and not focused enough with the "fat" engaged...solution: a TS9 Tubescreamer slightly overdriven can re-shape the tone to a precise "satch-like" distortion for solos. I found some very usable "seattle grunge" tones this way too. I play though mostly Humbucker-based guitars, but my Strat sounds amazing through this amp, too. I'm told Vox is discontinuing this line, so the price was SERIOUSLY dropped. I'm sure they've got a new model rolling out, soon, but for this price, just go with this amp. I said goodbye to my Marshall after hearing this amp, and I have no regrets about that. For most, however the 50-watter is fine, and it retrospect it probably would have been fine for me, too. One last thing: avoid the matching Vox 4x12...it's weak...I kept my 1960A Marshall cab because it's THE cab, and I'm glad I did. Plus, a Vox head on a Marshall cab looks surprisingly cool, personally speaking.
