This pedal has 4 very usable crunch tones, from low-gain 808 Tube Screamer to vintage Marshall lead with great sustain, and everything in between.
The main reason I'm writing this is because if you're like me, and have been chasing that elusive Eric Johnson lead tone, this is the closest thing I've found in a pedal. I know Eric uses the B.K. Butler Tube Driver into a vintage Marshall with an old Echoplex, but if you don't want to lug that stuff around (or pay for it!!), this Sparkle Drive Mod in the "1" position with a clean, tube amp and an analog delay will get you there!
Great work, Voodoo Lab - excellent product!!!
I only wish it had another button to switch between modes, because they're all cool and usable, and would be great to switch between them on the fly.....by no means is this a deal-breaker, though.
Voodoo Lab always makes great quality products, and I'm never dissapointed with their stuff!
For everything this does in one pedal, great value!

I bought this pedal after seeing the created behind voodoo labs (James) used it through a Marshall amp set to quiet bedroom level and was able nail the early Van Halen screaming tone using the high gain selection on this pedal.

He seem to nail the early EVH tone using it and then added layering effects to complete the EVH tone.

I bought the pedal because of what I seen and heard him do on YouTube. I already own everything else he used in the demo to complete the EVH tone, so I thought.

Here's my take:
What I found was the Sparkle Drive Mod seem to be very noisy when turned on and idled. Another issue I have is the selection knob at the top which controls tone pre-set settings from over drive to high gain makes a loud pop noise through my speaker cabs when the pedal is switched to each pre-set channel.

I'm not getting the same snarling EVH tone on the high gain channel he seem to get using the same settings running through my 1987 Marshall Lead 100 head set to bedroom volume running into two JMP 4x12 cabinets.

My amp is crystal quiet when the pedal is switched off and not when it's switched on.

I am a novice player, I have owned and use other hand made boutique pedals that seem much quieter when used vs this one.

The video clip had me believe the Sparkle Drive Mod pedal can get Eddy's tone at low volume levels and hence the reason why I bought it.
I'm baffled, The high gain selection isn't even close to what I am heard him get on YouTube.

My guess is it may have been very good audio editing tweaks that latter complimented the tone.

I found using my ISP noise gate quiets everything down but it's a huge disappointment to have to do this when my Marshall amp's master volume is set to one or two at bedroom level. If I turn my amp's master up to half volume levels the idle noise is unbearable without a noise gate!

I have commented on James's demos seen on YouTube asking for advice but haven't gotten any reply's.

Comments about Voodoo Lab Sparkle Drive MOD Overdrive Guitar Effects Pedal:

I got this as a replacement for a TS9, and boy does it blow the Tubescreamer out of the water! The standard channel sounds identical to a tubescreamer (I understand it's the exact same circuit as the TS808), but having the ability to blend in cleans really adds something more. Mod 1 sounds amazing with a strat; it's gain-ier, bass-ier, and a little ruder than the standard. Mod 2 tightens the sound, which sounds great and usable, but it's not my style. Mod 3 sounds like a more aggressive version of Mod 1. It's not quite a metal distortion or anything, but more of a full-tilt hard rock kind of deal. In closing, if you're considering buying any kind of tubescreamer or tubescreamer clone, get this one!

Comments about Voodoo Lab Sparkle Drive MOD Overdrive Guitar Effects Pedal:

The Sparkle Drive MOD sounds great. It's got 4 different presets, your standard 808-tube screamer tone, a fat lead channel, a rythmn channel and a "modern gain" channel. I've been using the Sparkle Drive MOD as a boost to my lead channel. What's cool about this pedal is the "clean" control, which lets you blend in your clean (meaning your amp tone, it doesn't have to be a clean tone at all) channel with the pedal's OD circut. So the tonal possibilities with this pedal are huge. I take the OD channel on my amp (60W Fender Deville) and use the SDM to boost the signal for more volume and to give my lead tones some extra cajones. With the blending on the clean channel you can get some really nice lead tones. What's really nice about this feature is you can still use your amp's overdrive, and you can put as much or as little of the pedal's OD into the mix as you want. So not only can you use the OD circut inside the pedal, if you're happy with your stock amp tone you can keep that and use the SDM as a lead boost or just add enough OD into the signal to fatten up your leads, without messing with the sound your amp's putting out. The other rythmn settings are pretty nice as well. I don't really use them though. It might be easier to use the other channels if there was a second button to switch between the channels on the fly. That's my only gripe, which is pretty minor.

Comments about Voodoo Lab Sparkle Drive MOD Overdrive Guitar Effects Pedal:

I really like the clean overdrive and true bypass of this pedal. I use it with a Voodoo Lab Giggity pedal for great control of tone modeling. Although I often would rather just play through the amp clean, these two pedals allow me to get that cranked up sound at lower volume levels.

Comments about Voodoo Lab Sparkle Drive MOD Overdrive Guitar Effects Pedal:

I've used the original version of the Sparkle Drive, which is a fine and highly regarded Tubescreamer style OD in it's own right. This Mod version adds quite a bit to that original without losing the basic character. The 3 additional modes allow alot of variation on the basic tone. The rather unique clean blend control, as found on the original and here, really does add a special kind of dimension, more amp like than the average TS based OD. Nicely made, too.

              Sparkle Drive MOD

              By Daniel Anthony

              from Brampton, Ontario CANADA

Comments about Voodoo Lab Sparkle Drive MOD Overdrive Guitar Effects Pedal:

I never owned the original Sparkle Drive pedal but I know that it was pretty much one dimensional - i.e. a "screamer" clone. Most who owned or who had tried the original version liked it. Well, if you were one of those people or maybe especially if you weren't - you should love this version! Four different "drive" settings - all with the option to dial in as much "clean" as you want offers the player a world of choice. As we all know, many pedals sound one way with single coil type guitars and a completely different way with humbucker types. Often we need to either change pedals or drastically adjust the settings to compensate for those differences. I would suggest that this pedal offers something for every guitar and pick-up type. From the original "TS" sound, to heavy "bottom end" to "scooped out" mids - there should be something here for everyone. I also own the "Giggity" - sister pedal to this one. When you play through both it adds even more tonal options. In this newer line of Voodoo Lab pedals they really got it right. Solid build, no noise, hiss or hum, silent on/off switch and great tonal variety. I own lots of other "boutique" type overdrives all of which are in and out of use from time to time. But - it looks like this one has found a permanent place in my pedal chain.

Comments about Voodoo Lab Sparkle Drive MOD Overdrive Guitar Effects Pedal:

I didnt like this pedal much when trying it out with just me and the amp, but when you play with a band or backing track, I appreciate it more. The tone is good and cuts through. I was hoping the high gain would kick out some metal, but my pickups arent hot enough, its just barely high gain sounding for my guitar. Hagstrom Ultra Swede, Stock.

Comments about Voodoo Lab Sparkle Drive MOD Overdrive Guitar Effects Pedal:

I just bought this today, so I'll refrain from staying in the honeymoon phase and try to review objectively. I was handed this pedal to play with, not expecting to buy it. Plugging it in, though..I knew I would have to have this tonal beast on my board. I was using a Vox Ice 9 Overdrive for my cleaner, softer dirt settings, but it always felt too dark, as good of a pedal as it was. This lean green tone machine immediately replaced the Ice 9, and unless I get another board, the replacement is permanent! The way that the grit and the cleans interact is beautiful, and there isn't a bad setting between the two. The tone knob ONLY controls the gain for the drive, which is good, because you can get a transparent clean, and then EQ the drive for additional tonal tinkering. The different settings are unique and quite usable, and I'll never be able to settle and stick to just one! Running through Jazzmaster single coils, the Sparkle Drive Mod really fattens up the tone and gives a lot of brawny GIRTH. It's a fantastic noise. With humbuckers, you get fat, thick leads and punchy, driven rhythm. I'm incredibly glad I made this purchase, and I can't wait to show this to my band mates!
