Visual Sound GarageTone Series Chainsaw Distortion Guitar Effects Pedal (430444)

Customize your sound with bright boost, dynamic crunch, full stack, and other massive tone settings

The Visual Sound GarageTone Chainsaw Distortion pedal belies its name with very musical distortion that's nothing like a chainsaw. Sounding more like an expensive boutique distortion, the GarageTone Chainsaw pedal is shockingly affordable. With big low-end and just the right amount of mids and highs, the creamy Chainsaw Distortion box will inspire you. Combine it with the GarageTone Drivetrain or V2 Route 808 pedals to get massive lead tones.

  • Chaisaw distortion no, awesome pedal YES

As reviewed by Mark on 9/20/2010

I bought this because of the price point and felt if it wasnt any good then I didnt lose much. Ive ran it with a USA Tele and Gibson SG through a Fender Hot Rod Deluxe on the clean channel and a Vox AC15. I was more than impressed with this and now use it exclusively for a nice dirt sound. I leave it set on 12,11,and 9 o clock positions for a light crunchy/vintage sound. It sounds great on both amps. I keep a Big Muff and a Daddy-O overdrive on the pedalboard and this plays very nice in conjunction with either (SG only). At the end of the day, it was money well spent and has become my primary distortion pedal. I highly recommend.

  • Vintage tube amp overdrive in a pedal

As reviewed by Tom Cramer on 11/28/2012

I use an American Tele through an Egnater Rebel 30 w/ two cabs (one a Jensen P12N, the other a Jensen P10R). On first use, I was disappointed in the lack of distortion compared to the videos I saw of the Visual Sound Son of Hyde. Although I expected more distortion, I soon found out that this pedal sounds a lot like my Egnater's clean channel overdriven naturally (turn the watt setting low, and crank the volume). IMHO it's the sound that overdrive pedals have tried to copy all these years. So now I can sound like real preamp distortion without having to change the volume of my amp to ear-splitting levels! And like my Roger Mayer Voodoo Boost, the Garage Tone cleans up beautifully when I play soft, and grunges nicely when I hit my guitar hard, just like authentic tube-preamp distortion. When I add my Visual Sound Route 808 to the mix, I get a beautifully clear (read: "cut through the mix")lead tone. I generally keep the tone control at about 10:00, to emulate my Egnater's clean channel. The tone can get outrageously trebly if need be, probably more suited to humbuckers, which I have yet to try. To sum up, this pedal simulates true preamp distortion without the coloration (read: nasally sounding) I get from my Route 808 and many digital distortion pedals. Probably the most natural sounding distortion pedal you can find for $50. If you want over-the-top distortion, this is NOT your pedal. If you want natural sounding tube amp distortion that responds dynamically to your pick attack, you'll probably love it.

  • Don't even bother. AT all.

As reviewed by Micheal Morrow on 10/13/2012

It is the noisiest pedal I have ever seen. And I don't mean distortion wise. The name is Chainsaw, not because of the distortion, because that is a gentle warm overdrive, but because everytime you plug it in and begin to play, it sounds like you plugged a chainsaw into your amp, and you're trying to play over it. So yes, this is not the pedal for you. Check out MXR or BOSS Pedals, because they are worth the money.
