The Vater Vintage Bomber Bass Drum Beater was designed in collaboration with Otis Brown III, drummer for jazz great Joe Lovano. The Vintage Bomber was conceived and designed to replicate the soft but boomy bass drum tones of the great jazz era. The Vintage Bomber's cork center is wrapped with a soft and puffy synthetic covering and is reminiscent in look, feel, and sound of the original lamb's wool beaters from decades ago.
Bought one of these to try on the kick head of a 16 inch cocktail drum. The sound is quieter, more muted, but still with a defined "boom" to it. It really does give that 'vintage jazz recording' sound to your bass drum. Great for lower-volume settings. Even though the beater head looks really large, it is not heavier than a normal beater, so it feels very similar on the pedal.
This beater is incredible for a giant range of areas of playing.... I use it quite often for various projects and the sound that it gives is great. Great attack, well balanced weight, and definitely allows me to use it whenever I need to. Great on small bass drums as well as my monster 22x24!!!
I'm kicking one of these against an Evans Genera G1 single ply clear head and the sound is amazing. Everyone coments on how good my bass drum sounds. Thinking about adding a double bass pedal to my kit just so I can have two of them.
