Overview

With its additional preamp gain stage, amazing variable Watts control, unique Depth control and tube-driven effects loop, the new high-gain Special 6 Ultra guitar amp head rockets the popular Special 6 platform to the next level.

The Special 6 Ultra head's added gain stage provides plenty of overdrive for searing leads, bone-crushing crunch, and gristly grind, while its amazingly effective variable Watts control can reduce the volume to whisper-quiet bedroom practice levels-while maintaining the same overdriven tone, texture and dynamic feel.

The Special 6 Ultra head features the same unique Volume and Tone controls as the original Special 6, the same footswitchable Boost, High/Low Power switch, and a similarly mod-friendly eyelet board. In addition, the Special 6 Ultra features a unique multi-position Depth control that fine-tunes the low-frequency depth; this feature allows you to carefully voice the amp's low-end to perfectly suit a wide range of guitars, pickups, speakers, and musical styles.

The Special 6 Ultra head ships with a 6V6 output tube for sweet clean and rich overdrive tones, and to accommodate tone-seeking experimenters, it can accept a wide range of alternate output tubes as well. The Special 6 Ultra also features an all-tube buffered effects loop.

I have been toying with the low wattage amp thing for a while. Don't play out like i used to. I have a couple of Valve Jrs (One Modded), Pro Jr, Haze 15 and various cabs. Aside from that i have played and owned my share of Big Boy amplifiers in my day as well. JCM 800s, 900s, Mesa, Fender Hot Rod but I have to say that the tone of this Ultra 6 is one of the most satisfying i have ever plugged in to for Rock music. The Ultra side could spoil you in a hurry. If you need some Gain in your sound this more than has it. I dont think i have ever plugged into an amp that didn't make me want something to juice it a little. I could play straight into this but of course i don't..LOL. I do like using my BBE Freq Boost in front but that is really just for more bite than just adding more gain. More of an EQ really. Just gobs of sustain. Adds a nice fuzz to single notes and chords still ring out with clarity even when you have a lot of gain. The clean side is nice and sparkly and overdrives very nice as well when cranked. Especially with a Les Paul type or in my case my 81 Ibanez Artist. There is quite a bit of control over your tone as well mentioned by the above review. The Watts Control does have a cool effect on the headroom of the power section on either the Clean or Ultra side. In small increments from full on back you can add just the right amount of sizzle to your top end. Doesn't effect volume that much unless on extreme reduction. Really works well and of course you can dial it all the way back down to minimum and riff and wail away and it is a perfect late night volume but yet still sounds good to me. The Depth Control is not a huge change as you adjust your low end frequencies but is more like a fine adjustment to your tone. I find my self tweaking this quite a bit between different guitars and i do think it works well. The Tone Control is what it is and even on it's lowest setting the amplifier doesn't go into complete mud like some i have run across. The 3-way Texture Control i keep in the middle. Manual says this allows the most harmonic content and i like it there. Haven't found a use for it in any other setting but maybe i will down the road. The Boost feature is a good feature and does allow more cut for going into leads. Footswitch that operates this is nice and small. Fits on the pedalboard. One thing worth mentioning with this amplifier is that it's sound is a little on the thin side but then again i am not expecting wall shaking volume/thump from a 6watt amp either. I will not ding it for that but just figured i would mention it. Compared to say the Valve Jr, The Valve Jrs tone is thicker but i do like the Ultra 6 better in the stock tone department regardless. Also to me they are Apples/Oranges. An upgrade to the stock tubes was an improvement also. If there is a slight disappointment in the Ultra 6 it is the effects loop. This feature was the initial reason for buying it because i do like some echo for ambience when playing. Hard to get a low watt amp to stay clean enough to run delay before it thus "Hey, this has a loop...wow!!" I have a Carbon Copy and a TC Nova Delay. The CC was not going to work for me. Seems like the loop just clips that pedal so that was a no-no. The Nova does do better because of the Loop/Instrument input feature on it but i am still not satisfied with the tone of it. Might want to consider this if your in the market for the Ultra 6 for the loop alone. An instrument level effect is going to be hard to get right in this loop from my experience. May try the big Boss Delay next and see. I have played once on a backporch jam with this head and a 2 1x12 Cabs. It was almost loud enough. We did some Floyd, Allman Bros, etc so nothing outrageous but i had it pretty much dimed and did wish it had a little more headroom. I think miked it would've been perfect because i did like the tone i got with my strat that night. A little bit of delay and i might've been Gilmour for a moment. Aside from a couple of things i am still very impressed with this head. I have not regretted one second purchasing it. If nothing else it is making me now look at the VHT 12/20 for possible live use if it has this same sound. If the Ultra 6 only sees that one night out that is fine. It's still more than worth having and i'll use it to record/practice with it. In my "studio" It makes me want to play and i find it kind of inspiring when i do. I am definatley keeping this one.
I will not go into the specific features since they are already listed. I will say you get a lot for your money/
Mine came in perfect condition. All the controls feel good to me. All of the screws in the chassis was tight (a 1st!!) Tolex, Piping and all the aesthetics are there.
A rediculous asking price for what you get. I can't believe there are only a couple of reviews. Some folks are missing out.

this amps gets compliments from other musicians but is hooked up with other low wattage combo with vintage 30 Bogner amp. great club sound, Bogner provides clean and slight distortion while the el34 in VHT head make it a fat tone pushing 2/12's

Not sure what's up with the previous review of limited gain. It screams for me, with single coils! You have to twist the knobs a bit, but there are lots of useful tones in this amp. The stock Chinese tubes sound fine, but I couldn't resist swapping tubes to see what happens. The ringing over tones are there with every set I tried, just the frequency hump changed depending on the tubes. EH, JJ, NOS, etc, it didn't matter. They all sounded good! I'll burn the stock tubes, and might even replace them with the same, when the time comes. I see no need to mod this amp head at all. I'm running the amp through an Egnater Tweaker cab, or cabs.

Great amp lots of features and great price cant find any other amp that comes close in this range , this amp has it all clean , crunch , and ultra dirty ! takes pedals well too, in front for analog and digital go in the loop . Also you can change the output tube to 6L6 or EL34 for more tonal variation , however a JJ 6V6 sounds the best imo ! sounds great through a 4x12 , 2x12 or 1x12 its very versatile !

Comments about VHT Special 6 Ultra 6W Hand-Wired Tube Guitar Amp Head:

I purchased this Ultra 6 Head recently. It has a really good build quality compared to the Peavey 20 MH and the Marshall 5 watt. Switches and knobs have solid feel to them, not cheap or worn out as do some new units. Went ahead and put in some new JJ tubes as others recommended; it has a very powerful sound to it. The various controls let you dial up anything from clean to mean. It includes a footswitch to turn the boost on/off. You can't just go from clean to overdrive without re-plugging the guitar in, only has an input for clean or overdrive channels but you could use an A/B switch to help with this; sort of a nuisance. Lot's of mods out there for this thing; but I am a little nervous about hacking and soldering so soon-maybe after a few years. Has a five year warranty-that's great! But it might void your warranty if you do the mods! If you come across one give it a test drive maybe you'll like it.

            WORST AMP I'VE EVER OWNED

            By JOHN BYRNE

            from Austin, TX

Comments about VHT Special 6 Ultra 6W Hand-Wired Tube Guitar Amp Head:

So, I bought this about 50 days ago and I've used it less than 25 total hours. Now when in 6amp mode the sound is distorted or "clips" on clean or in ultra mode. Total waste of $340.00. I would rather have a solid state $80 Roland, Crate, or Suzuki amp any day over this doorstop of an amp. Wasted gobs of my money in the studio recording with this amp only to hear that noise after the fact and it is continually getting worse. I'd love to return it but I'm sensing that I may just have to break it into a million pieces inside the store when they refuse to take it back b/c it's past 30 days. Don't buy this, you will end up regretting every hard earned dollar you spent on it. I know I did, and now I have to buy a new replacement to add insult to injury.

I agree with Hipi, this amp is very well made and can do it all. I got mine at MF when the price was a little less. I have the ultra, and it can crank or it can purr. The picture dose not represent, it is solid and surly bigger than those orange lunch box things. Mine is pack full or tubes and wires, and a sweet 12 inch speaker. Yes I have the combo. You will love this amp.

Comments about VHT Special 6 Ultra 6W Hand-Wired Tube Guitar Amp Head:

I own a lot of tube amps (none over 50watts), and this one's, well, unique. I've had it about a year now, and here's my report: This thing is HUGE! The picture doesn't give you a frame of reference, so you might not realize it. However, this amp (I have the head--not the combo) is the size of a JTM-45; those tall, wide 'Bluesbreaker' Marshalls...it doesn't even have a reverb pan (but there's sure room for one!). I feel like part of a cartoon with this SIX WATT amp that's wider than the 1x12 cab it sits on. The great thing is, though, that if you want to use it in a situation too loud for it with a 1x12, you can leave the cab home, bring a reverb, and line-out it to a PA channel. The saturated sounds are great, but if you plan to gig with it you'll likely have to use the cleaner tones--which are just fine!--and get your OD/Fuzz/distort-o-tone from pedals. I'd recommend you put those pedals on the front end; resist the urge to put them in the loop. As others have explained here, some pedals work, some don't in the EFX loop. Personally, I think the loop's mostly for running 2 of these things one into the other (as they suggest trying in their literature). I do, sometimes, for sick, over-the-top stun-tone, with a 2 watt Fender tube amp and this....
One observation about this amp's 'bare-bones' tone controls: there isn't really any place you can set the knobs/switches that DOESN'T sound great. So, there's that, too. The clean side (as it were) sounds more 'Vox-ish' to me than 'Fender-ish'.
At home, with this amp you can 'play loud' as quietly as you have to, via the 'watts' knob. Wow! I used to have a Fender Super Reverb with only one volume (45 watts/4x10); by the time it sounded like it wanted to, the neighbors *were* calling the cops.....the Super 6 Ultra manages the big amp sound at any volume. Personally, I like the unusual, sparse control layout, and with effects in front, I don't have to consider unplugging/plugging back in to change 'channels'.
Try one; they sound great. You'll like it or you won't, but it won't be because it doesn't sound great!
