Overview

With its additional preamp gain stage, amazing variable Watts control, unique Depth control and tube-driven effects loop, the new high-gain Special 6 Ultra combo amp rockets the popular Special 6 platform to the next level.

The Special 6 Ultra combo's added gain stage provides plenty of overdrive for searing leads, bone-crushing crunch, and gristly grind, while its amazingly effective variable Watts control can reduce the volume to whisper-quiet bedroom practice levels-while maintaining the same overdriven tone, texture and dynamic feel.

The Special 6 Ultra combo features the same unique Volume and Tone controls as the original Special 6, the same footswitchable Boost, High/Low Power switch, and a similarly mod-friendly eyelet board. In addition, the Special 6 Ultra features a unique multi-position Depth control that fine-tunes the low-frequency depth; this feature allows you to carefully voice the amp's low-end to perfectly suit a wide range of guitars, pickups, speakers, and musical styles.

The Special 6 Ultra combo ships with a 6V6 output tube for sweet clean and rich overdrive tones, and to accommodate tone-seeking experimenters, it can accept a wide range of alternate output tubes as well. The Special 6 Ultra combo also features an all-tube buffered effects loop, and is loaded with a 12" VHT ChromeBack speaker.

I LOVE this amp! I am not a noob beginner just drooling over his first amp. I have been playing for 35 years and have owned many good amps. I have always preferred tube amps, but I was looking very seriously at the Fender Super Champ X2 and the Fender Mustang III. After a in-store test drive of both amps, neither one had the tone I wanted, not to mention the 'fizz' issue with the Mustang III. So, I started looking elsewhere, and I came down to this amp or the Jet City JCA2112. In the end, I chose this one over the Jet City because the Jet City uses a EL84 output tube, and this one uses a 6V6, sort of..... you can literally swap out ANY octal tube in this amp, with NO bias adjustment, and it will just go with the flow. I have, thus far, tried the 6V6 (which it ships with), a Sovtek EL34B, and a Ruby 6L6GC. All of them sounded okay, including the stock 6V6, but the 6L6GC was creamy and wonderful sounding. I also swapped out the stock Chinese preamp tubes for a JJ 12AX7 and a Philips (long plate) 12AXWA.... big difference! They make these amps to mod and play with, heck, they even have mods listed on the VHT facebook page!
The only slight drawback I have with the amp may not even be an issue for many people.... the stock speaker, a 12" VHT 'Chromeback' sounded really 'woofy' at first, I mean I hated it, but the more I played it, the better it sounded. Now that I have put quite a few hours in on it, it really isn't bad. I'm sure that there is some 'better' speaker out there that I would probably be happier with, but for now, I have no problem using this one that came with it.

All in all, this is a great bargain, no, an EXCELLENT bargain. I have played all sorts of music through ths amp (Wes Montgomery style jazz runs, Van Halen, AC/DC, Govt Mule, Metallica, Led Zeppelin, Kentucky Headhunters, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Country, old clean 50's style, you name it!) and they can all be easiily dialed in on this amp. I did this using my Strat, my Les Paul, and my SG. My Gibsons have all Alnico II pickups, which sound heavenly through my 5150II half stack and through my Marshall JMP 2203. As you can probably surmise, I didn't buy this VHT because I needed a monster, I bought it because I need a good, small, portable combo amp that can give me the sort of tonal variety that I get with my 'big' amps (the VHT is only 6 watts, but WOW what a 6 watts!). This amp delivers big time. It sounds good with the stock speaker, but I also ran it through my 5150 cabinet and it sounded beautiful and full.

Knowing full well that I will have to mic the amp (or use the included Line Out jack), I would gig with this amp with no hesitation whatsoever. Hey, I'd even love to grab another one to run them in stereo, that'd be a wonderful little rig with a variety of great tones!

Really, I can't say enough good about this amp. I have drooled over the thought of an old blackface Fender for a very long time, because I know how beautiful they can sound, but who can find or afford one? Well, this amp has that same capability, and it is literally made to mod it to your taste. Is it loud? Nope, and it aint supposed to be, but the tone is staggering for such a low-priced (notice I didn't say 'cheap'?) amp. Buy one, you won't regret it!!
Clean and footswitchable (footswitch included) boost volumes (not chanels), depth control, treble range adjustments, 1/2 power switch, fully adjustable output wattage, tube buffered effects loop, this amp is loaded with features.
Build quality is excellent. Sturdy, nicely finished, you could tell the assemblers cared about the finished product.
This is, hands down, the greatest value I have ever seen in an amp. I have been playing guitar and buying 'stuff' for a very long time, and I don't make that statement lightly. In fact, they could charge twice as much and it would still be a good deal, this amp is that good.

This thing has great sound at managable volumes. Very Fendery tone. The controls allow for a wide variety of adjustments and the footswitchable boost is very cool.
I got two of these from Musician's Friend and both had problems and I had to send them back. The first just died - not a tube issue either. The second one, the input jack fell apart the second time I used it. I wasn't interested in trying to fix it after my experience with the first one.
If it worked, it would be a fantastic value. I've tried almost all of the other mass manufactured sub-10 watt amps and this has the best tone by far.

Comments about VHT Special 6 Ultra 6W 1x12 Hand-Wired Tube Guitar Combo Amp:

I got this amp on a whim after a friend had built it up for tone...... I bought it and have done NOTHING to it yet and have used it in a club micd and unmicd and it performs well and I use the effect loop always. I have an Ibanez tsa15 which I really like as much as this U6 but, the tsa is a cab/head set and (lol) less portable for an old fart like me. The tsa I use in triode at 5w most of the time but with my pedal board and amp and guitars the U6 combo is just easier to carry. I wish the U6 had a footswitch though and that's the only neg I have. I use teles, strats, Floyd rose guitars and les pauls and the amp sounds great with all of them. My effects work well in front and the loop. This amp has been dropped and water spilled onto it and it had been solid and reliable every time. Works well with my 2x12 cab, 4x12 and a vintage Sovtec 4x10 mig cab.

Comments about VHT Special 6 Ultra 6W 1x12 Hand-Wired Tube Guitar Combo Amp:

I'm not what you'd would call a virtuoso by any means but I do have a good ear. This (stock) combo produces the most amazing array of tones I've come across in a long time. An absolute steal at this price. Would need to be mic'd or run through the PA for most rock gigs I'd think but with the luscious tones this thing makes it would be worth the effort. It's an amazing practice/bedroom amp as well, you can get all the tones you want at volumes that won't wake up your family. From Jazz to Country, 60's rock to Metal, this amp will give you the sound you're looking for. Also, if you're into modding you couldn't ask for a more perfect platform.

This is only my second tube amp in thirty years of playing. It sounds awesome. The cleans are fantastic and the breakup sounds are great too. Lack of a footswitch to the Ultra channel keeps this at 4 stars.

Comments about VHT Special 6 Ultra 6W 1x12 Hand-Wired Tube Guitar Combo Amp:

I tried to replace my Blackstar HT-5R with a Fender because no matter what I tried I couldn't get the Blackstar to sound good with my Wah or X3 Live. After trying to buy Fender Super Sonics three times and a 68 Deluxe Reverb one time and having to return them all for quality issues, the only amp left that fit my specs under a couple grand was the VHT Special 6 Ultra 6W 1x12 Combo.
I found it to be extremely quiet when idle, the effects loop handles my BBE really well even though the amp doesn't need the BBE nearly as much as the Blackstar HT-5R or the Fenders did.
The VHT loves all my pedals including my wah and X3 Live.
The clean compares very closely to my Fender Blues Jr NOS and the Ultra distortion channel sounds good, but I prefer my Boss DS-2 and X3 Live because I need to switch from metal to clean in the same song and this amp doesn't switch channels. No big deal to me.
It even compares well to my Vetta, both clean and super high gain with the X3 Live.
All my comparisons were made with my Radial Bigshot ABY using A, B, and Y settings with my Vetta on mono through one speaker and the VHT using a Blackstar HT-112 external speaker cabinet.
The VHT Special 6 Ultra 6W 1x12 Combo is exactly what I've spent the last year looking for and is now my grab & go amp, I love it.

this is my first tube amp. Bought used. It has a great sound. once you get used to the depth, texture and boost functions you can get the sounds you want for what every guitar you plug in. I play mostly clean so the ultra channel is kind of along for the ride.

One fault is that the clean and ultra channels are not foot switchable. The foot switch activates the boost.

I AM VERY HAPPY WITH THE QUALITY OF THIS AMP. IT SOUNDS GOOD, AND EVEN WITH 6 WATTS CAN REALLY GET LOUD. IM STILL SEARCHING FOR THE BEST PEDAL FOR DISTORTION. IT OVER DRIVES AND BREAKS UP NICE, BUT NEED A PEDAL FOR THE METAL SOUND.
IT BRINGS OUT EVERY LITTLE SOUND IF YOU RUN AN EFFECTS UNIT INTO THE JACK, SO BEST TO USE EFFECTS LOOP. IM STILL TRYING THAT TOO. STAND ALONE, THIS SOUNDS GOOD CLEAN AND DISTORTED WITH ITS BUILT IN POWER BOOST, BUT TO GET LOUD YOU MUST OPEN BOTH VOLUMES AND THEN LOOSE THE CLEAN. LOVE THE VALUME CONTROL TO THE SPEAKER. CAN CRANK THE TUBES WIDE OPEN, AND THEN TURN DOWN THE SIGNEL TO THE SPEAKER, SO COOL. LAST THING, IT IS BUILT LIKE A TANK, AND THE SPEAKER IS VERY NICE. I MAY TRY DIFFERENT TUBES ONEDAY, BUT NOW THEY SOUND JUST FINE.

i had 'youtubed' and played several amps for a few weeks. been playing through a blues jr,(love this amp)with a greenback in it.(still play it, just not as often anymore). usually put an wampler ecstasy and/or a TS-9 in front of it. but with the VHT and it's adjustable wattage dial and ultra dial, there's no need for pedals, imo. it's got balls. i appreciate the low power/high power switch. i would guess my neighbors do also. i've bounced back and forth with the 6v6 and a 6l6. i'm liking the stock 6v6 more. a little warmer. ordered a greenback for this one too. just partial to those speakers. and while i continue to look at amps for sale online, i ask myself WHY? there really is no need to.

Change the stock speaker out...it's terrible. I put in a texas heat eminence. Forget the 6v6 and try an El34 or KT66. This amp is NOT about clean sound,,,,what it does is have a great and killer touch responsive distortion. Bypass if you want clean headroom. With a guitar like a Les Paul and the mods I mentioned you have a killer dirty rock n roll amp! Mic it up at a gig and you may rethink hauling a half-stack!
