Overview

The six-watt Special 6 guitar combo amp gets its powerful tube sound from one 12AX7 preamp tube and one 6V6 output tube, with a 10" VHT High-Sensitivity speaker. It boasts a footswitchable Gain Boost feature that significantly expands its range of tones-it's the only amp in its class that excels at both clean and overdriven tones, and it's the only amp in its class to offer a footswitchable boost. With the Gain Boost, players can instantly toggle between clean rhythm tones and overdriven leads, essentially duplicating the footswitchable functions of a 2-channel amp in an all-tube, hand-wired, simple, 2-knob combo.

To further expand its range of tones, the Special 6 combo also features a High/Low power switch that enhances low-volume tones with extra-smooth richness (when in half-power mode). It's a great feature for recording, or for low-volume "bedroom" players. In high-power mode, it's one of the few amps in its class that is loud enough to compete with a strong drummer.

The mod-friendly VHT Special 6 guitar combo amp is easy to customize for home amp builders and tube-amp enthusiasts.

Comments about VHT Special 6 6W 1x10 Hand-Wired Tube Guitar Combo Amp:

I've owned the Special 6 about 6 months. I'm not a great guitarist but do appreciate good sound. It sounds great with both single coils and humbuckers and gets plenty loud for a home studio. For the price and quality it can't be beat.

    Nice for Blues

Comments about VHT Special 6 6W 1x10 Hand-Wired Tube Guitar Combo Amp:

Since the GC doesn't stock the VHT Special 6 Combo, I ordered this amp, relying on the reviewers on this and other sites. I have played mine over a year and have not been disappointed. I am trying to learn to play early blues with a slide on self made fret-less 3-string guitar. I have experimented with several different tubes to check the tones and currently have Tung-Sol's in both positions. It produces a warm sound without shrill highs. My original Chinese tubes sounded good and have a little less breakup and are brighter than the Tung-Sols. With Hi imput and without the boost, a good room listening level is about 1/2 volume. This is beginning to get some very nice blues breakup. Backing off on the guitar volume will allow turning up the amp to get more tube breakup, yet keeping the volume OK in a room and producing a very good blues sound. With the boost On and Hi input, I set the volume to less than 1/4 for my family room playing with others elsewhere in the house. It really has a nice little bluesy break up at about 1/2 volume and is a good bit louder. I usually don't turn it higher than 1/4 if anyone else is home. If dimed, it will be very loud. I like the original speaker.

    Crystal Clear Cleans Bedroom Amp

    By John Wheeler

    from Detroit, MI

Comments about VHT Special 6 6W 1x10 Hand-Wired Tube Guitar Combo Amp:

Let me start first by saying that this is my first tube amplifier. I researched low-wattage tube amplifiers extensively for "bedroom" volumes. I live in an apartment complex and don't want to upset my fellow neighbors. I could not find the Special 6 locally anywhere, so I went out on a limb and purchased before playing. I'm glad I did. Right out of the box it sounded beautiful. I play an Epiphone SG with humbucker pickups. This amp is extremely versatile as well. Also, the Special 6 take pedal exceptionally well. A big selling point for me was the "high/low" switch, which allows the amp to output 6 or 3 watts. I wanted an amp quiet enough to play in my apartment but have the ability to open up if I ever join a band. The Special 6 is plenty loud on 3 watts still. I don't turn the volume up 1/4 the max volume. The boost is another great feature the amp has to offer. I have read reviews that the stock tubes are sub-par, but to my ear they sound great. Finally, the cabinet is very sturdy and well-built. Although it is Chinese made, VHT makes sure quality is not compromised. You cannot beat the $240 sticker price! I would highly recommend the Special 6 to anyone looking for a well-made, all tube, low-wattage amplifier that offers a variety of features.

Great little amp - love the tone

    By John Robinson

    from Seattle, WA

Comments about VHT Special 6 6W 1x10 Hand-Wired Tube Guitar Combo Amp:

I'm not a big gear head - so you get my advice based on comparison with a limited number of alternatives. Clean tone from this sounds really nice. I'll save you from attempting a poetic description of the amp's sound - but when I play through this amp, I really like the sound. It stays pretty clean up to the volumes I can handle. Even the low power setting gets pretty loud when you get the volume up half way. I usually run it with the boost / low power setting / high input. I'll probably acquire or make an overdrive pedal to get more variety of sound. On high power and when you really crank it, it picks up some RFI - actually tuned to a local radio station. I think there is a mod you can apply to cut out the RFI, but I'm going to enjoy my amp for at least a year before I attempt hacking the circuit. The reasons I picked this over some competitors (AC4TV/Bugera V5, etc.) are the other online great reviews and the hand wiring. I own too many electronics that combine high complexity and low cost such that they are disposable. Although this amp's price is relatively low, I really like that it's a simple documented circuit which I could troubleshoot and repair in the future if needed. I'm not going to spend the money on a boutique amp any time in the near future, but I feel like VHT is really going after the same level of quality as a boutique amp and making it accessible to those of us who don't yet have the guitar skills to justify dropping a grand or two on a small practice amp.
