Hand-wired, all-tube goodness with extra gain and unique controls.

With its additional preamp gain stage, amazing variable Watts control, unique Depth control and tube-driven effects loop, the new high-gain Special 6 Ultra guitar amp head rockets the popular Special 6 platform to the next level.

The Special 6 Ultra head's added gain stage provides plenty of overdrive for searing leads, bone-crushing crunch, and gristly grind, while its amazingly effective variable Watts control can reduce the volume to whisper-quiet bedroom practice levels—while maintaining the same overdriven tone, texture and dynamic feel.

The Special 6 Ultra head features the same unique Volume and Tone controls as the original Special 6, the same footswitchable Boost, High/Low Power switch, and a similarly mod-friendly eyelet board. In addition, the Special 6 Ultra features a unique multi-position Depth control that fine-tunes the low-frequency depth; this feature allows you to carefully voice the amp's low-end to perfectly suit a wide range of guitars, pickups, speakers, and musical styles.

The Special 6 Ultra head ships with a 6V6 output tube for sweet clean and rich overdrive tones, and to accommodate tone-seeking experimenters, it can accept a wide range of alternate output tubes as well. The Special 6 Ultra also features an all-tube buffered effects loop.

  • WORST AMP I'VE EVER OWNED

As reviewed by JOHN BYRNE on 4/23/2014

So, I bought this about 50 days ago and I've used it less than 25 total hours. Now when in 6amp mode the sound is distorted or "clips" on clean or in ultra mode. Total waste of $340.00. I would rather have a solid state $80 Roland, Crate, or Suzuki amp any day over this doorstop of an amp. Wasted gobs of my money in the studio recording with this amp only to hear that noise after the fact and it is continually getting worse. I'd love to return it but I'm sensing that I may just have to break it into a million pieces inside the store when they refuse to take it back b/c it's past 30 days. Don't buy this, you will end up regretting every hard earned dollar you spent on it. I know I did, and now I have to buy a new replacement to add insult to injury.

  • Perfect home studio/BR/practice amp

As reviewed by TDR on 5/7/2011

This amp is a winner. Simple as that. Not only one of the most affordable low watt tube amps, but has built in options normally only found on high end amps. I have only had the VHT SPecial6 Ultra in my hands a couple days, but I was immediatly impressed with the build quality and variety of tones available with some knob tweeking. Most of the low dollar low wattage tube amps are for the most part just "one trick ponies". Not the Sp6 Ultra. Out of the box It has nice chimey clean tones simular to what you would get out of Fender amps. It also can do a lot of variations of crunch and classic rock tones. Then theres the Ultra part of this amp where you can go for sizzling hot metal. This was the simplest amp I ever had to dial in decent sounds. Even though it has the least amount of knobs/switches/toggles of any amp Ive owned, it has just enough of those to allow for many different areas of tone shaping. And even though at a full 6 watts it is loud enough to practice with drums and base players. But where I beleive this amp is aimed at is for home players or aptartment dwellers, where too much noise from louder amps isnt tolerable. Cleans, metal, and rock crunch can all be shreaded out all at whisper quiet levels. The magic is in with the Full/low power switch and the watts control dial. This is a well built amp. Birch ply and a realy nice tolex job. Tubes are easy to axcess. The stock tubes are okay. But another feature of this amp is the ease of changing the tubes for higher quality and better sounding ones. The stock tubes are this amps biggest limitations, but only when you start diming the volume and Ultra dials. They have a slightly low headroom for cleans and when realy pushed on the crunch side they start to realy feedback with a nasty sizzley note. Improved tubes wil allow more headroom for cleans and better satuaration for rock or metal sound. I have already started swapping tubes and found them to improve things ten fold. I have tryed the FX loop and it works fine with my gear. I havent tryed the line out yet. Again these are features normally only found on pricier amps.
