I'm a professional in Nashville (aren't we all?). I've been touring for about 10 years, have recorded a handful of national releases, and I've been writing and demoing at home for almost 10 years as well. If you don't own or can't afford a $20k+ HD rig with a board and heaps of outboard gear I think this interface is the best step toward semi-professional recording. The setup was faster than any other plug-in i've downloaded online. I've used quite a few big name plug-ins but never bothered with UAD-2 stuff because of the price. Now that I own this Apollo and got the plug-ins, installed, and registered everything it was incredibly easy. I have an iMac running on 10.6.8 with Pro Tools 9. I couldn't believe it was so easy to set up and install. I even had a Satellite QUAD core drive daisy chained and there was no problem. The console program that runs along side the Apollo is so easy to use, and you can meter your CPU usage of the combined UAD-2 devices at all times. If you're tracking at high sample rates I would recommend the QUAD Apollo. Right now I have about 24 plug-ins on the console program and i'm maxed out running at 44.1. You have the option to only monitor the plug-ins or track to your disk with the affected signal. You can also create two stereo mixes for the headphone outs. Brilliant! The plug-ins sound amazing, and throughout the setup process and even the CPU monitoring windows you have easy access to get a hold of UA service reps if you run into a problem. Encouraging, but I also hope I don't have to call them. I easily daisy chained my 4-710d 4 channel UA unit via lightpipe and synced the word clocks. I'm excited to throw up a drum set and use 18 channels at once! (8 analog inputs +10 digital [8 via lightpipe, 2 via SPDIF]) I use a Mackie Bigknob for monitoring so the single stereo monitoring output doesn't bother me. So the bad news is you gotta buy those plug-ins that are usually a couple hundred dollars. Now, compared to my native plug-ins from other companies the EQ and compressors sound way better. It's great already that i don't have to devote so much CPU of my computer to mix and track. So the rest of the bad news is if you own one DUO device, you can only have so many tracks with plug-ins on them especially if you're higher than 44.1k sample rate and you can't use UAD-2 independently of your UAD-2 device (no diverting to your host computer drive). If you want to branch out of 44.1 you'll need more horsepower. Consider how much you're tracking and how much you'll need. With my QUAD satellite and my DUO Apollo, I feel like im good to go for a decently sized session. Anyway, initially everything sounds great through speakers and headphones. I'm really excited about this interface and highly recommend it.
