I have owned many, many mic stands over the past 40 years of live and studio performance and this boom arm is absolutely the best I have ever purchased for live performance. Unless there is some miracle and someone else makes a better boom arm, this is the boom I will purchase from now on. The knob and handle adjustments on this boom arm are so smooth and you don't have to 'muscle' them to get the arm to stay in the position that you desire. All thumbs and toes up for this excellent product! I knew from the moment I started making adjustments that this was far superior to any boom arm I had been using for the stage in the past. It even looks impressive.
I ordered three of the Ultimate Support ULTI-BOOM TB Telescoping Boom Arms to top 3 of 4 of the Ultimate Support PRO-SB Stackable Base Mic Stands. I topped the 4th stand with an On Stage Posi-Lok Mini Boom Arm for an overhead drum mic stand for my AKG Perception 220. The Ultimate Support stands and boom arms are nice looking, have a good feel, and work well. They are "heavy duty", but I fear heavy duty may not mean good quality in the lon term. Of the three boom arms I received, the threads were completely missing from the stand mount ferrell of one of them out of the box. Additionally, the stands themselves were not packaged for shipping well at all. The stand bases were scuffed and paint chipped. Of the four mic stand bases, the heavy decal that sits in a recessed portion of the stand base was found floating around in the box with paper stuck to the adhesive on two of them, and one was shipped with no decal at all (I checked and rechecked all of my packaging, the seat of my pants, and the bottoms of my shoes and it was nowhere to be found). I contacted GC Customer Service. After three or four attempts to communicate the condition and defects of the items I had received, the Customer Service Agent provided me with two options...1.) Return the items by "mail" for replacement or 2.) He would take my credit card number again to assist me in purchasing three additional mic stands and a boom arm at regular cost and I could then return the defective merchandise to my nearest GC retail store for a refund. Keep in mind I had already unboxed everything and assembled what I could AND my nearest GC retail store is about 35 miles away (each direction). Overall, I believe the equipment will turn out to be good stuff in the long run. However, for the price, my expectations were certainly to receive good quality merchandise right the first time. I hope GC hold this vendor accountable for their right the first time customer service expectations! Just a thought.
Very good, nearly great, compact boom. Good counter weight. More than adequate extension for the boom. The oversized knobs are extremely helpful. All in all a great boom for the price. A big plus is that with the heavier counter weight, all of the extension is towards the stage, very little hanging out on the audience side; big advantage here is when the stage is really the floor. Keeps the boom out of the way of the dancers and/or "partiers". One thing that concerns me are the knobs for the extension. They feel okay, could be a bit more secure feeling. But they do seem to work. As our other booms go out I will be getting more of these to replace them. At least for the front line.
I have owned many other mic booms, all of which cost between $10 and $30. Although this boom is nearly $40, I am completly satisfied and am confident it will hold up to multiple adjustments for a many years. ALL of the lesser expensive booms had weak handles, rough sliding extenstions, and poor locking mechanisms. Not this one! I am so satisfied with the strenght and easy of use with this boom, I have purchase 2 additional booms and stands. Clearly, this is one great example of getting what you paid for!
