  • Takes forever / very finicky and difficult

As reviewed by Erik Lantz on 9/19/2012

Gave it another honest try because of the you-tube recommendations. Just couldn't get it tune the drums very quickly or very well. I tried it on a drum with perfect hoops and edges. It took awhile, but I was able to "force tune" the drum to a note from the online instruction book. I then tried it on a known bad drum (low spots in the bearing edges) for a real test to see how it would react to real world use and see if it could find the bad spots. It couldn't. I tuned the drum to the right frequency 218 hz (confusing... so many to choose from) at the edge of the drum, but the drum sounded damped and out of tune (drum went out of tune faster than it took to tune it). The tune bot said the drum was in tune, but it obviously didn't sound in tune (because of the bad edges?). Be careful with this one, very expensive. I have trouble recommending this one.

I bought this tuner a week ago and I'm really amazed, at first it was a bit difficult to use but now I love it!!! you can tune in different frequencies for different styles of music. also save time tuning. very well constructed and reliable.

I am a rookie used drum owner, so I bought a tuner to help set them up. I love my clamp-on guitar tuner so this thing made sense to me. This has a microphone instead of picking up the vibrations directly like the guitar tuner, so it's tricky. Just watch the videos on the manufacturer's website and/or you tube for tips. I'ts nice you don't have to move it to each lug like the pressure gauge tuners. You can tune by frequency or by note directly, which again being a rookie, sounded like a good easy option for me. I put new batter heads on, tuned the bottoms tighter for less resonance, keep my wife happier, and away I go.
