Overview

The A400 from Traps Drums is a portable drum kit that feels and sounds like a regular drum kit. The drums are constructed from high-quality, durable A.B.S. and are fitted with Remo heads, steel counter hoops, and are tuned with the traditional multi-screw tuning system. This also allows the use of pads for silent practicing. The rack system that the drums and hardware fit to is made from substantial steel tubing which means that everything stays exactly where it's put when the kit is set up and doesn't move.

Geoff Nicholls of Rhythm Magazine asked in 2005: "Can a shell-less kit ever stand in for the real thing?" He concluded: "Shell-less kits are a viable alternative and Traps A400 is easily the best so far."

Rack system
The A400 rack-mounting system is made from sturdy large-diameter chromed steel tubing. The kit can easily be set up for either left- or right-handed players using the supplied tough ABS multifunctional joints.

When set up, the rack is very strong and, once fitted with the supplied four large rubber feet, stays where it's placed and doesn't move. This provides a noticeable improvement in playability compared to other portable drum sets in this price bracket.

Top Quality Hardware
The A400 comes fitted with quality hardware as standard. This includes hi-hat and kick drum pedals that are both rugged and free moving. Also included is a snare basket, boom cymbal arms (which can be slid into the frame for easy storage).

The hardware is both reliable and distinctive with black-painted footplates and a "Traps" embossed seat squab. They also feature quality chain drives, memory locks, expansion springs and clutches.

12" snare drum
The A400 12" snare drum has a very crisp sound as a result of the high-quality ABS molding combined with the chrome-plated steel counter hoops, Remo Ambassador heads, and 8 square-headed tension screws. This all results in a snare that's easy to tune and capable of cutting rim shots and thick X-stick sounds. The drum also features a sturdy throw-off with a positive feel and a knob at the opposite side of the drum for adjusting the stretch in the snares. This means that the A400 snare has the additional ability to produce Latin/world percussion sounds or to function as an additional tom.

10", 12", and 14" toms
The A400 toms are manufactured from a tough ABS molding which is further strengthened by a triple-flange counter hoop, then to complete the toms, they are fitted with top-quality Remo Pinstripe heads. As with all the A400 drums, an industry-standard multi-screw tuning system is used.

All this attention to detail results in a quality sound never before heard in a portable kit.

20" kick drum
The A400 20" kick drum is an uncompromising double-headed design fitted with a UT Powerstroke 3 drumhead on the back and Remo Ebony drumhead on the front printed with the Traps logo. It is also fitted with chrome-plated steel hoops.

Its shell is made from a robust high-quality injection-molded A.B.S. fitted with custom dual-mounting points ideally suited to mounting in the A400 rack mount system. A strong metal plate is fitted to bottom of the rear counter hoop so that when the kick pedal is fitted, the beater strikes the head at the optimum position--top of the upstroke.

Cymbals not included.

Features This kit contains:
  • A set of 5 traps drums
  • Hi-hat stand
  • Kick pedal
  • A400-rack: An A400 rack system excluding all drums and pedals. An ideal upgrade system for mounting third-party drums correctly

  • A400-tom12: A single 12" A400 tom

Worth it!

By CHRISTOPHER CAMARILLO

from Houston

Just purchased this set and its everything I expected and more. looked at videos of it online and reviews weeks before I pulled the trigger on it. The setup is easy. I did have an issue with my snare clip. It came in broken and unfortunately the plastic piece is not replaceable. I couldn't just sent out the snare and have it replaced so I had to box the entire thing back and ship it out. GC took care of it with one simple call. No hassles whatsoever. They shipped my new kit once UPS registered it on the network. Awesome! I got my kit probably around the same time they got the broken one in their hands.(did get a chance to toy with it before shipping it out:) The kit sounds phenomenal for it being classified as a "practice kit" haven't replaced the heads. Just got my other drummer friend to help me fine tune it. Worth every penny. I got mine without the cymbals. My friend is anxious to borrow it for his next gig. Happy customer here. Gonna have to purchase the 8" tom direct since GC does not carry it yet.

Amazing. But....

By Josh Diepenhorst

from San Antonio Texas

I have owned this drumset for around 4 years and it has been my first set. This is great kit for beginners...the downsides are the cymbals, which are terrible. And also the toms are not deep enough and neither is the bass drum, but if u tune them correctly they will sound great. The upside of this set is how portable it is...literally I showed up to my gig late and I was the first one set up in 5 minutes. Overall it's a great product; the only thing is but new cymbals and u might want to but new heads.

Traps review revisited

By Tim Gardner

from Indiana

Purchased my Traps back in Feb of 08. In this year and a half or so, I have set up/tore down this set more times than I can count. Fantastic! No stripped nuts or screws, no cracks, hardware has held up great! At first resisted using them for gigs, but had a need to use it in a small intimate jazz setting, and they blew everyone away. So, I thought why not? I now use them probably 75% of the time my band gigs, and they continue to impress everyone that sees and hears them. These will serve you well!

Outstanding Sound and Portability

By Nick Clark

from Ft. Worth, TX

The traps drum set is outstanding in sound, price, and portability. I was a bit nervous about buying a shell-less kit; now I'm glad I took the plunge. It sounds just as good as a regular drum set and easily fits in the back seat of my scion. The whole kit weighs about 60lbs, so its not too tough to carry. The remo heads it comes with aren't the best, but they're OK for stock. It has plenty of volume and tone

The future of portable, acoustic drums!

By Ryan Malcolm

from Big Rapids, Michigan

I got this set about a week ago and I love it! It barely takes up any space at all and you're still able to get the sound and playability of a normal drum set. I have this thing set up in my room and it's like I barely even notice it's there! The only thing that could be made better is a deeper sounding bass drum, but that's about it. It's super easy to set up and the fact that the rack can be used with a normal sized set is a bonus for future purchases. You can't beat the price on these things either. It's a perfect alternative if you don't have space for a full size drum set, but don't want to convert to electric, or if you simply don't have a lot of money to spend, but still want a quality set. I also like how it's fitted with Remo heads, so you know they're replaceable. Great buy!!

practical

By andy taravella

from pittsburgh

i absolutely love these drums.i am usally late for gigs and thats ok as long as i have these drums.last gig i was the last one there with 10 mins to show time not only was i set up in five but i was the first one out of there. the only thing is the bass drum isn't deep as i like it but i mean there is no depth to it which is part of the reason i bought them other than that the set is stage ready.i think with a little tweeking of the bass drum i think it will be ok i only had them a month and i still love them.

Traps drums surprising

By Tim Gardner

from Indiana

Very cool set. Took a while to get the bass drum dampened to where I like it. Works great going from rehearsal to home and back with a very quick set up. Haven't tried them at a gig yet, but will have to mic the bass drum even if it's a small venue. Not much punch at all from that but the other drums tuned very nicely and the quick set up/tear down alone is worth the price rather than wasting rehearsal time.
