Comments about Toca Graphix Globe Shaker (6-Pack Assorted):
Although I don't own these specific shakers, I have used the Toca Graphix globe shakers, and own some similar ones. I initially bought them as a way to pass the time on a drive back from Santa Cruz--trust me, you can learn a lot about shaker techniques when you're a passenger for a three-hour car ride--but they have become quite useful in the recording studio. For recording, all our drums are programmed, and it's a constant battle to make tracks sound realistic. An easy fix is to add a track or two of shaker to the mix. It doesn't have to be prefcet, and in fact, a few rough edges add lots of character and believability to the song. Experiment--you can do a lot with these, making them sound like everything from a hi-hat, to a share, to a brushed snare (try swirling in a circle). Another idea--take one of them apart and pull out some of the ball bearings inside. You'll have a shsker with a different tone and more "accuracy" that will work well for multi-tracking. What I thought would be an afternoon's fun has ended up being a valuable recording tool!
