Overview

The Loar's nitrocellulose-finished LH-650 cutaway acoustic-electric guitar offers an excellent option for traditional jazz guitarists who want to make the classic archtop sound heard clearly for ensemble playing. The Kent Armstrong floating pickup amplifies the sweet natural tone of the hand-carved spruce top, while the Florentine cutaway allows unrestricted access to the upper frets, making the LH-650 guitar perfect for either soloing or accompaniment.

The hand-carved archtop cutaway guitar is assembled with a solid hand-carved spruce top and solid figured maple back, sides, and neck. The bone nut and compensated adjustable ebony bridge let the sound of the select tonewoods resonate clearly, and the bound ebony fretboard is both beautiful and durable. The bound pickguard with a single volume knob adds to the vintage look and feel. The archtop is finished with a meticulously inlaid mother-of-pearl Fleur-de-Lys headstock design and a hand-buffed nitrocellulose lacquer tobacco sunburst finish to stay true to classic design and style.

    • Fret cutting string windings

Comments about The Loar LH-650 Archtop Cutaway Hollowbody Guitar:

Even if I knew the guitar had this problem, I would still buy it without hesitating. After 4 months of intensive playing, the 7th fret cut through the 3rd string winding. An 8x magnifying glass clearly shows that the frets were filed but not polished smooth. There are evenly spaced grooves along the top of every fret. That's trouble. The 3rd string winding gave out last night on the gig. I was using Thomasik Jazz Bebop Medium strings, a high end set. That never happens on my guitars. Suddenly the string started making a snapping sound, like the string was hitting a high fret. I checked two other high quality guitars, and the frets are polished smooth, no grooves.

Comments about The Loar LH-650 Archtop Cutaway Hollowbody Guitar:

I totally forgive and understand the cheesy pickguard. If there is one place where it makes sense to cut corners, that's it. Many players take the pickguard off.

The important stuff is done perfectly. Response is even top to bottom. Using nickel bronze strings 13-56, no flat wound, tone is strong and sweet over the pickup, strong and aggressive near the bridge. It does audible single string, rhythm, and chord melody with or without the amp at a jam or in the small wine bar where I play a lot. The Kent Armstrong humbucker is true to form; you couldn't ask more from a pickup. Love love love that 24.75" scale! Tuners work fine. The thick strings don't hang up in the nut when tuning. I always have to raise the adjustable bridges on these archtops because I pick firmly. That takes a minute or two. Raise it way up, try it, bring it down until it buzzes, take it back up a bit. Same drill for both ends. Fuss with it a bit, done. That's all this guitar needed to be perfect. Somebody already set it up nicely. It was an open box deal.

Lives up to its promise, with one minor fixable glitch

Comments about The Loar LH-650 Archtop Cutaway Hollowbody Guitar:

The volume knob gets in the way of the right hand. It's right under the sweet spot, which is, by the way, really sweet. This is a great guitar, definitely worth the trouble of fixing the little ergonomic problem.
