Overview

It's less costly than the original Sans Amp, and it's even easier to set up. So the folks at Tech 21 must have compromised on sound quality, right? Not as far as we can tell! GT2 purrs and screams with the same kind of fat, warm, glowing-glass sounds heard in the original, but cost-effective manufacturing brought the price down. You select amp type, modification, and mic placement. Find the tone you want using high and low EQ, set your level, dial up distortion with the drive knob, then hit the "on" switch. A truckload of tube amps in a pedal!

First, let me say I a Tech 21 Bass Driver DI and a Tech 21 RK 5 Fly Rig, and those are outstanding products. I thought I would love the GT2, but I was let down with this one. It just sounds hollow and gainy. There is not depth to its tone. To me, when I run it direct into the house, it does not sound like an amp emulator. Instead, it sounds like I am using a distortion pedal as a preamp. Not good. I get the same sort of effect when I put it in front of an amp as well. I was getting better Marshall and Fender tones from a Line 6 Pod when compared to the GT2.

pretty real distortion

Comments about Tech 21 SansAmp GT2 Tube Amp Emulator:

This pedal sounds very good by itself as well as in front of a tube amp. I wish it had a mid range control though. For close to two hundred dollars it really should. If you play metal hook this up with another dist. pedal and you'll like it. If you're a bluesy guy add an eq pedal to it and boost those mids. All in all a very good pedal because you can get really good clean sounds out of it too. Sounds pretty real going direct too.

Very useful device

By Mike Garcia

Comments about Tech 21 SansAmp GT2 Tube Amp Emulator:

For years I've used various amps on stage and for recording - everything from Marshalls to Mesa Boogies. I picked up the SansAmp GT2 for recording, and I will tell you that it sounds EXACTLY like a hot-rodded tube amp. Bear in mind that this is not a distortion box; rather, it's an amp simulator. You cannot play it through your guitar amp. It's designed to go straight into the mixer or PA system, and it duplicates the sound of a miked cabinet quite well. That's the whole purpose - to eliminate the need to drag stacks of amplifiers all over the place when you're gigging. The "British" tone selection sounds very close to a Marshall, with plenty of low-end crunch. Honestly, people in the audience (or those listening to your recording) will not be able to tell that the sound is coming from a box the size of a ham sandwich. It sounds much bigger.

Excellent Pedal!!

By Mister Donkeypiss

from NY, NY

Comments about Tech 21 SansAmp GT2 Tube Amp Emulator:

First off, I want to say that I greatly disagree with the reviewer that claimed that this pedal could not be played through an amp. I play mine through the clean channel of a tube amp and it sounds unreal! Yes, it was designed to go into a mixing console or P.A system, but I happen to know for a fact that a lot of guitar players use this as a standalone distortion pedal, especially metal players. This pedal can do everything from AC/DC type overdrive to full out heavier than heavy metal. If you're into heavy distortion, this is the pedal for you. Highly recommended!

Simply mind blowing

By Loren

Comments about Tech 21 SansAmp GT2 Tube Amp Emulator:

The feel and sound of the unit is amazing. I have a '93 Fender Telecaster fitted with Noiseless Pickups. I use my Sansamp through the house and it responds just like an amp. The sound does not feel compressed and breathes. I use the Classic/High Gain/British setting. Lots of crunch and personality. Warm, ballsy and thick. I have had mine for over a decade now and it still is the number 1 preamp for electric guitar for me. Playing through the house is a joy with the Sansamp! Truly an innovation! Nice one Tech21NYC! I am going to try out the Sansamp Blonde now.

Versatile pedal for many styles

By MARTIN JUBB

from Olympia WA

Comments about Tech 21 SansAmp GT2 Tube Amp Emulator:

First, let me say this pedal will definitely work in front of an amp. I put it in front of a clean tube amp and the sounds are everything from clean and fat to thunderous hard rock, even metal. It will sound like the best preamp or OD/Dist pedal you ever heard on a clean channel or pump up an anemic distortion sound from any amp. It also does great direct to console stuff, for recording nothing else is necessary, unless you want to. It works great just into a PA system for a no amp backup too. I love it with my American Standard Strat, it really like the single coils, but is at home on humbuckers as well. I am not saying it's perfect as nothing is, but it's the best investment in a pedal I can find. Throw a Tube screamer in front of it, and it's killer. I have tried almost all of them and it's as good as it gets, it even pulls off a decent bass sound. As far as amps go, it covers the classics, and I've owned Fenders, Marshalls, Boogies, Riveras, Peaveys, modeling amps, and I still love this little box. At least try it, you will probably love it.

Sansamp GT2 is a must have

By BRUCE

Comments about Tech 21 SansAmp GT2 Tube Amp Emulator:

I've been playing guitar for 40 years. This pedal completed my set up by providing true tube amp sound without the amp. It added balls and definition when placed at the end of the signal chain. I set it on Clean, Tweed and off axis, full volume with the drive set at around 10 o'clock, bass at 3/4, and flat treble. It comes after my Boss BD2 Blues Driver, which is after my DigiTech RP250. I play original roots, rock and blues - going from a slightly dirty blues tone, to a hard rock crunch depending on the song. I play in Nashville regularly and have gigged from CA to DC in the past few years. Along with my BD2, the GT2 has made a huge difference in my sound. I wish I had gotten one years ago! No more lugging around heavy amps for me!

Only Distortion Pedal I Will Ever Use

By Nyk Bray

from Statesville, NC

Comments about Tech 21 SansAmp GT2 Tube Amp Emulator:

I've had this pedal for over two years now and it's the best i have played on. In my opinion, if you like true heavy metal get this pedal with a Boss EQ and mess with them til you get your sound. I'm into Pantera and Avenged Sevenfold and the sounds i get out of the two pedals is fantastic for playing those styles but also its great for a high power distortion sound. I guarantee you will not send this pedal back once you play on it for a few weeks.

Comments about Tech 21 SansAmp GT2 Tube Amp Emulator:

I was looking for something that would help the sound of my customized tele (Dimarzio PAF-style neck pickup) direct into both my audio interface and my looping station.

This thing does the trick beautifully. Great versatility, from the clean Fender to the raunchy Mesa settings.

Very simple and easy to use.
