Overview

The deluxe version Tech 21 SansAmp VT Bass Distortion pedal boasts a combination of a warm, all-analog signal path and convenient digital recall. There are 6 program locations and dual inputs for 2 instruments to be online, ready to go. Create 3 custom tones for each input or use all 6 locations for a single instrument.

You can program the FX loop to engage your favorite effect each time you select its designated preset. The SansAmp VT Bass Deluxe is super-simple to operate-changes can easily be made on the fly-without having to refer to the owner's manual. You just turn the knobs to a setting you like, double-click on a footswitch, and it's saved in that channel.

The Tech 21 SansAmp VT Bass Deluxe distortion pedal's level and drive controls work like a traditional, well-equipped amp. Low, mid and high are active controls, providing a wider array of tonal possibilities. The Character knob is continuously-variable moving seamlessly between different model voicings, covering vintage, high-gain, and face-melting lead tones.

The Tech 21 SansAmp technology captures the warm, rich, natural tones of the most sought-after tube amplifiers. Within the parameters of each model's particular design, the controls provide you with access to specific tone-shaping characteristics within the tube amplifier sound spectrum.

Tech 21 SansAmp products are designed to work seamlessly in both recording and stage environments. They can be used with almost any instrument, for any music style, and for multiple applications. Record directly to tape and disc or enhance previously recorded tracks. For live performances, they can drive a power amp and speakers, augment your existing amplifier setup, or run directly into the mixer of a PA system.

Comments about Tech 21 SansAmp Character Series VT Bass Deluxe Distortion Effects Pedal:

This pedal brings all kinds of life to a solid state amp and/or a passive bass. As you know, it takes up a lot of space on a pedal-board but maybe not as much as a separate DI plus a three band EQ plus an ABY switcher. Now add in the Character, Drive and Level knobs that interact with the EQ to produce a variety of sounds that you can assign to presets with or without an effects loop in play. That would take a half dozen little pedals.

Other than min, max and the center detent, it's not easy to find the same settings on the guitar or amp so having these shortcuts gives me less to worry about on a gig and more to play with while practicing. There is a reward for tinkering with the knobs to find the best mix to keep handy.

There are others that you may want to consider if you don't really need/want everything this one does. Any of the other "Character" series Sansamps, the Darkglass B7K, the Radial Tone Bone along with new pedals from Ampeg and Two Notes are among similar pedals with slightly different feature sets.

Outside of a full-on processor, I don't think any of them have six distinct tones under foot. Do you need that many? Do I? I use the first one for nice thick blues notes, the second for mid-rangy rock and the third has a touch of dirt. The second bank is set up like the first but with a little more of whatever I'm aiming for. This allows for a weaker bass to be put into the second input or just having a way to punch up the sound.

I also use the direct out for the board and the parallel out for a second channel that can be clean or spiked with whatever effect I like. Two ins and three outs is just right for me. The loop, of course, is yet another I/O pair. That's how I keep my tuner out of the signal path. So the VT Deluxe or it's cousins can operate as the central element of a pedal board or can effectively be the board without a board and all the pesky little cables that go with it.

Comments about Tech 21 SansAmp Character Series VT Bass Deluxe Distortion Effects Pedal:

This SansAmp VT Bass Deluxe gets a very real analog grind that doesn't lose the bottom end as many pedals will. When run in parallel with a REDDI, you can get a phenomenal record quality SVT tone. This unit also does quite great on its own live or recording. Very simple and straight forward to use. Fast track to a great usable tone.

Only negative is when you make an on-the-fly adjustment to a parameter, you can hear a pulsing in the audio along with the flashing LED until you save it as a new preset. This only takes one second to correct by saving it, but it's noteworthy to mention.

Comments about Tech 21 SansAmp Character Series VT Bass Deluxe Distortion Effects Pedal:

I don't normally care for effects pedals too much, especially ones for bass guitar, but I've found this one to be quite versatile and good-sounding. I can get all kinds of different bass sounds out of it and it's good to be able to switch between presets easily. It really can go from a deep, thumpy bass to an aggressive, distorted sound. The control knobs are pretty sensitive though, so I'm still getting used to that. Expect some feedback and such when you first start experimenting with it. Overall it's a great product and I think I'll be using it often for years to come.

        Holy Faerie Dust, Bassman!!!

        By MICHAEL COMEAUX

Comments about Tech 21 SansAmp Character Series VT Bass Deluxe Distortion Effects Pedal:

Makes a whole world of difference in available tones, that are usable and relevant, even on my $300 Ibanez GSR206 (which was mis-marked @ $197 and the GC staff insisted on honoring the lower-marked price a couple of years back during their local Grand Opening weekend). The VT Bass Deluxe lives up to all of my expectations, and it brings out the best in my bass, and gives me the ability to have any tonality I can think of when playing my favs. I use the Parallel Out to a second amp for live, or into a second channel on the mixer when recording direct, and the sound is so full, rich & textured, that it fools me into thinking that I'm not playing along with the music (bass mostly stripped from the tracks) until I make a mistake or stop playing and realize that all those sounds of the "Rickenbacker" or hot "Fender Jazz" I was admiring was coming from my inexpensive Ibanez GIO 6-string bass, my Rotosound strings (SM666 Swing Bass) and my own fingers. The box is sold, the siwtched sturdy & smooth as butter, and it changes instantly with no clicks or pops from switch to switch & bank to bank. No discernible noise at rest, either. Very happy with my purchase!

        Amazing pedal

        By WILLIAM RIDNER

Comments about Tech 21 SansAmp Character Series VT Bass Deluxe Distortion Effects Pedal:

My main stage rig is powered by the Tech-21 VT-Bass 1000 amp head. My biggest problem was reproducing the character sound(s) I wanted with my smaller gig/practice amp. I had the Sansamp pedal but it wasn't doing it. I did not realize that the same tone circuitry was available in a pedal, until I was browzing the Tech-21 site one day. This pedal gives me my big rig sound in a smaller, more portable package. You can get ANY character bass sound you want out of this pedal. IF you plug it into the return input of the fx loop on your amp (do NOT use the send) it bypasses your amp preamp controls and you get just the pedal an your preamp. PLus it has an fx loop itself that works great. Another plus is its direct box function for recording. I highly recommend this pedal.

Comments about Tech 21 SansAmp Character Series VT Bass Deluxe Distortion Effects Pedal:

The VT Bass Deluxe has quickly become one of y favorite pieces of gear.
If classic tones is what you're after, the VT Bass can deliver. Th controls are. Rey intuitive and responsive and programming couldn't be easier. Simply dial in a tone you like and click the footswitch twice, done. You have dual instrument inputs if you want to have a separate bank for instrument A & B or if you use only A input you can have all 6 locations available at all times.
Personally I use normally two different basses during a gig, but I still just use the A input only. This is so I don't have two cables foundering about on stage. I just switch banks when I change basses.
The DI is very clean and high quality and the 1/4" out can be boosted if needed. There is a parallel out as well as a series effect loop for further versatility. The only thing that I find could improve this unit is a Blend Control to enable blending you dry uneffected signal with that of th VT Bass. This is a fantastic feature of the Para Driver DI that I feel should be implemented across the whole product line.

        Best Sound I've Heard!!

        By Barry Conaway

        from Palm Bay, Florida

Comments about Tech 21 SansAmp Character Series VT Bass Deluxe Distortion Effects Pedal:

Honestly, this predal/preamp is the best money I've spent on bass gear yet. I've only ever messed with the tone controls on my bass and amp, never even considered a preamp. However, after reading some reviews, I decided to try out this amazing gizmo. My rig has never sounded so good. I managed to get the tone of Justin Chancellor (Tool) and Dean Bernardini (Chevelle) something I've always strived for but, never really fully achieved. I also tweaked some sick, nasty distortion on this thing, making my old boss bass distortion look amateur. I highly recommend this preamp to any and all bass players. You'll never hear a better sound or tone.

Comments about Tech 21 SansAmp Character Series VT Bass Deluxe Distortion Effects Pedal:

I've been playing for about 16 years. The church I played at recetnly got rid of all the amps (including guitars) and ran direct to keep stage volume down. I had used the traditional SansAmp BDI in the past and liked it so I thought I'd give their latest and greatest a try. This unit gives a greatvariety of tones in a nice compact unit. You will have the sound of a mic'ed amp running direct through the PA. The sound guy loved my tone right from the start and it sounded fantastic in my in-ear monitors. Now all I bring is this box and my bass and I have a great sound!

Comments about Tech 21 SansAmp Character Series VT Bass Deluxe Distortion Effects Pedal:

The first time I plugged this in I thought "that's what a bass is supposed to sound like!" Great pedal, totally compensates for my mediocre sounding amp. My band mates both noticed the difference in my tone.

With this and a good compressor (I use the Barber Tone Press) you can get a very polished, professional tone. I plan to use mine to go direct to PA rather than micing cabs and just use my amp as an on-stage monitor. Pricey, but worth it in my book.

        A Bass Players DREAM

        By Willis Farnsworth

        from Chico, CA

Comments about Tech 21 SansAmp Character Series VT Bass Deluxe Distortion Effects Pedal:

If you're looking for a killer sound from creamy, melt-your-face, butter tones to tube overdriven, rip-your-arms-off Yes and King Crimson bass tones, this is your pedal. Ive played everything from jazz, country, blues, funk, and rock and there is no sound I can not not dial in. Best product and bang for your buck.
I bought the VT bass pedal when it first came out and after a few months, the DELUXE addition came out, but I figured I was already set and satisfied with the non-deluxe version. After years of playing with the old pedal, I sold it and bought the deluxe and I could not be happier. Up to 6 presets and its so very easy to switch between them and save new ones. Without a doubt the best purchase I've made to improve my sound in a long time.
Tech 21 is my favorite company after I saw the reliability and durability of the other pedal. Solid build and fluid and responsive knobs. I had the non-deluxe version for ~4-5 years and I never had a problem, EVER.
I couldn't argue with the price tag. It comes with everything you could ever desire in terms of your sound. Has an xlr and 1/4'' out, boost for outputs, and a ton of other features and gadgets that make this pedal a must have for bass players.
