Simply the best piece of equipment a bass player can buy. It will transform your sound more than you can imagine. This little box makes everything sound better, your amp, your bass, your recording. Definitely makes your amp or bass sound better but its not the same feel as a tube rig. The direct line-in is pretty awesome for recording and running thru a PA. It doesn't work for all setups (pickups/amps). I fried this pedal but luckily it was under warranty. Kinda costs more than most pedals. I knocked it cuz it broke in less than 6 months and it did sound like it took away on some amps(usually 4 band eq rigs). But again it redeemed itself for me for laying down bass tracks by going direct. All in all its still is worthy of being in the gear collection!

every bassist should own one

By bryanonbass

Comments about Tech 21 SansAmp Bass Driver DI:

This pedal just kills. It adds so much clarity to your bass sound. I carry this with me to every gig. Sometimes the bass rig is broken when I arrive at the club. No issue, just use this as a DI and your set. My sound is always the same no matter what I am running through. Plus this pedal lets you dial in some great usable tones. Want an SVT like overdrive tone, no problem. Want some dub lowend, just turn a few knobs. I use this as a preamp for most gigs, so I just run the bass into this and then the Sansamp into the effects return on my amp. My tone, all the time. Its built like a tank. It also sounds GREAT on guitar. It really just spices up the tone and bring everything out front in the mix. Its a staple in my gigbag and it should be in yours to.

Beefcake

By Roger Shattuck

Comments about Tech 21 SansAmp Bass Driver DI:

I've had this little guy for about 8 years. This thing is a tank. I used it on tour when I went to Afghanistan and never once had a problem. The Phantom is probably one of the smartest things I've ever seen for a stompbox, wish more folks would use it. The controls are straight to the point and functional. I can go on for hours about knob twiddling. I've also used this for acoustic and electric guitar, and had very good results. The overdrive and amp simulation make the home studio a much less noisy place. I guess the biggest compliment I get is the "Wow, you've got a Bassdriver". That and the folks that want to steal it!

just right

By andrew Wiegerig

Comments about Tech 21 SansAmp Bass Driver DI:

was in the market for a new pedal that did a little bit of distortion but mostly overdrive and refined my sounds. THis box does just that. My sound is just a little more edgy and slightly distorted but nothing crazy. I still feel like im in control and still am holding down the rhythm.

Sweet!

By Michael C

Comments about Tech 21 SansAmp Bass Driver DI:

This is the sound we were looking for. Attention sound guys, ever wondered how to get that rich crisp punchy sound from your bass player. This is it! I bought this at our bass players request and we are super pleased with the results. As some of the other reviews mentioned, you can even lose the bass amp if your sound system has good low response. Your bass player will come alive again with the Tech 21 SansAmp Bass Driver DI. Batteries not included... not needed. You can even power this direct box with phantom power... how cool is that. Its the little things guys.

Handy SVT emulator

By peeder

from San Francisco

Comments about Tech 21 SansAmp Bass Driver DI:

This producet remains propular after 10 years or so because it's so reliably useful and durable. Not to mention a bit easier to move than the 8x10 SVT that it emulates! The controls are all very intuitive and the thing keeps working. You'll have to plug in to actually get a taste of it, but the ability to blend in direct tone as well as overdrive and presence makes this thing actually quite versatile. Can be powered with internal battery (you have to unscrew the thing to get at it) or via phantom power from the mic preamp. Great for stage use but sounds good enough for studio use as well.

magic box

By Humungo Bass Monster

Comments about Tech 21 SansAmp Bass Driver DI:

I've had a Bass Driver DI for about 6 years. They just can't be beat as a way to give your bass a nice tube sounding overdrive. The EQ on it is simple and flexible. The only thing better than having one is having 2. I use the first one as a distortion out to my amp and use the second one as a DI with the treble rolled off so it doesnt sound raspy in the PA.

Sansamp Bass Driver DI

By sock_monkey5

from Front Royal, VA

Comments about Tech 21 SansAmp Bass Driver DI:

The Sansamp is a great product, it takes care of any impedence problem I have encountered, sounds better than any other pre-amp I've used and has great fuzz effects, I give it two thumbs up. I've used it with an SWR amp and an Ampeg amp, and it enhances the sound on both. The Presence dial is fantastic as well.

Convincing

By Kevin Glenn

from Palatine, IL

Comments about Tech 21 SansAmp Bass Driver DI:

Sounds like a tube pre-amp. Even though I own an all-tube amp, the BDDI sounds very warm and tube-like. The overdrive on this unit sounds like: a partially distorted/fuzzy growl. You can dial in the overdrive very tastefully and the unit never gets insane distortion wise. The overdrive reacts to your playing style and will growl/distort more if you hit the strings harder. The downside is that this unit will scoop out the midrange or your tone. To compensate, increase the mids on your amp. Using this unit before an amp will make nearly ANY amp sound incredible. If you don't have the money for an expensive bass rig, try the BDDI with your setup.

Comments about Tech 21 SansAmp Bass Driver DI:

This thing is terrific. Used it as a pre-amp into my Bassman 250/210 at a gig last week and it was great.... nice and funky to deep and smooth. I haven't used it solo into a PA yet but I'm looking forward to it.... built like a tank as well!

Essential

By Blue+Pinup=CustomShop

from Reidsville, NC

Comments about Tech 21 SansAmp Bass Driver DI:

Every bassist, regardless of style, needs this box. It has such realistic emulation, it's so much easier with this in the studio than setting up an amp, and the results are just as great. Live, you can use it as a stompbox or a preamp and DI, and it's phantom powered......so save your money for batteries and use it on something else, like a second BassDriver DI.

An svt in a little black box

By GEORGE HASBROUCK

from houston, tx

Comments about Tech 21 SansAmp Bass Driver DI:

This pedal is the closest thing you could get to 1 lb affordable svt in a box. I use it to kick in some grit but... i've used it to record, d.i. live, and bypassing cheap preamps on amplifiers(google it). It's a must have for any bassist. It sounds amazing there's a good reason almost every pro rig has this or the m-80. It's a pro preamp in a box. It's worth every penny...you have no idea...unless you have one. Get one!

Fantastic sound

By Cameron Simpson

from MI

Comments about Tech 21 SansAmp Bass Driver DI:

I mainly use this for playing morning worship at my church and the sound I get from this is fantastic. I run a Fender American P Bass through it and it puts out such a smooth sound. And for touring I don't need a huge amp anymore, granted there is a PA. This DI can be used for any size venue, from a small club to a huge outdoor outing. It is by far worth the price, the tube emulation circuitry works phenomenally. Well done Tech 21. I recommend this DI for every bass player, it's definitely necessary.

DI Box, but not effects pedal

By Val Strode

from Saint Louis, MO

Comments about Tech 21 SansAmp Bass Driver DI:

What this is and what it is not; It is a DI box, and a pretty good one from my experience in recording studios. If you plan to be in the studio, get one of these instead of using one with no controls. Or, if you plan on using the PA (with subwoofers) playing live and do not want to drag around your amp, get one. If you plan on replacing your effects pedal with this, don't. It has 5 buttons, 7 knobs, a foot button, 1 input, 3 outputs; INPUT - Input from your bass here, before going to any other pedals. The manual says to zero out your bass controls for active bass and set normally for passive bass, but actually don't change anything on your bass. Parallel output - this bypasses any of the device's mods and is great for going to a tuner pedal or clean amp. XLR - For going to the PA or in the studio. Don't use the phantom power unless the XLR will supply power to your device. You will need a 9v battery or 9v standard pedal power connection (not supplied) with this unit. LEVEL - Set to 12 o'clock to match the power output with the stomp button off. Otherwise, this is your volume. BLEND - How much of the signal gets processed and how much goes clean. Set to max (5'oclock) to get full effects of pedal. Anything less is probably not worth using. MID - Actually probably a mid-high CHARACTER - High or treble knob DRIVE - DIrty fuzz, sounds like a broken speaker. You will need some level on this, probably set to 9 o'clock. LOW - Low HIGH - Mid high actually Buttons; Phantom power (to power unit from XLR) +10db - bumps up output. Not really needed BITE - Adds a touch more of high SPEAKER - Makes the output sound like you have multiple speakers, like 10's. This unit does not do effects per se, but gives you enhanced lows, mids, and lots of highs from which to choose. Comes in a metal box for transporting safely. Overall, you will notice some richer lows and crackling highs using this product. Again, if you need a DI it is the best one I have used so far.

Comments about Tech 21 SansAmp Bass Driver DI:

I bought this unit because I recently began playing on our church's worship team, and we use in-ear monitors with a direct box. I've always used an amp, and I have a sound I enjoy hearing from my equipment. My amp for small gigs is my GK MB200, and my set-up for large gigs is my Eden WT-550 along with a Behringer NU3000DSP. Speakers I use individually or in combinations: Carvin RL210T, Trace Elliott 15", Seismic Audio 2x15, personal 2-ft3 cab I built with a Faital Pro 12PR300A woofer (which I HIGHLY recommend btw), and a personal 8-ft3 ported cabinet I built tuned to 30 Hz with a Selenium 18SW800 woofer. I use the latter cab with my Behringer for an AWESOME bottom octave fill. BTW the Seismic Audio 2x15 is pretty good despite it's cheap price...but I digress!

My point is to let people know that I usually play with pretty good equipment to get "the sound" that I want. When I first played at my new church, I was adjusting to in-ear monitors and not hearing/feeling my bass like I wanted and was used to. I spent MANY hours on forums and reading reviews to see where I needed to start. Though the SansAmp may not be everyone's favorite, almost everyone seems to agree every bass player should have one. Well, I want to add my 2-cents worth to echo that sentiment!

I spent some time with the SansAmp on my rig at home and through my personal sound system to "dial in" a sound that I liked. When I say I liked it, I mean I REALLY liked it! Besides the bass, mid, and treble settings, the Presence and Drive are AWESOME to help you get what you want. What I learned quickly is that a little adjustment goes a long way. I've attached a picture of my most used setting. I now love the sound I get in my ears and through the sound system at our church. I can't say I don't miss the "feel" from my personal system, but the SansAmp has been a life...uum, or ear...saver! When playing large gigs, I've discovered I prefer to include the SansAmp along with my Eden. Thank you, Tech 21!!!

    sweet sound!

    By Alex

    from Minneapolis, MN

Comments about Tech 21 SansAmp Bass Driver DI:

My dad got this to use for recording, but he didn't like it so he gave it to me. Worst mistake he's ever made! I just love the way this sucker makes my bass sound! I use a boss distortion effect with my bass, but it takes away from the bottom end of my sound. When I add this to it as a stompbox, it's like putting my bass on steroids. For sure one of the best buys a bassist could make. I recommend the SansAmp to anyone who wants to better their sound.

    Awesome piece of equipment

    By Chris

    from Houston, TX

Comments about Tech 21 SansAmp Bass Driver DI:

I just got this a few days ago and have been using it at my church running it straight through the house, no amp. The variation of sounds you can get out of it is incredible! If you're looking to run straight through to a board, this is the DI box for you. I've also used it at home, not as extensively, with my Ampeg SVT-410HLF cab for practice and it still has the same great range of sounds. As far as I'm concerned, either way you choose to use it this box will impress you.
