Tech 21’s latest addition to the popular Fly Rig Series: Fly Rig 5-BRIT. The BRIT’s distortion section is based upon Tech 21’s British SansAmp Character Series pedal, which was inspired by the celebrated, crunchy vintage amps from across the pond.
While those hulking stacks are known to sound best at ear-bleed levels, the BRIT section can painlessly transform your sound at the kick of a switch. You can completely change the personality of a clean amp tone or use it as an instant mod with a dirty amp tone. Engaging the Boost function is like having an extra “12AX7” pre-amp gain stage. Activated via its own footswitch, you can kick in up to 21dB of pre-amp boost. The range allows you to go from a state of mild overdrive to insane gain. Boost also operates independently to punch up any of the other functions.
The other features are the same as the original Fly Rig 5. At its heart, is the all-analog SansAmp™, which makes it possible to go direct to a PA or mixer. Effects include a reverb voiced to create the rich ambiance of a vintage spring reverb, and a delay with tap tempo and adjustable tape drift-style modulation for authentic textures.
Less than 12 in. long and weighing just over 18 oz., this sleek, compact unit embodies an entire rig you can just pop into a guitar case.

Comments about Tech 21 Fly Rig 5-BRIT:
Tech 21 did a great job with the SansAmp and Delay sections on this 9.5 inch wonderboard. Sadly for me, that is where it ends. Try using the Brit section alone. Thin, and shrieking. Like trying to go direct off a feed from an amp with no emulation or compensation, even direct into another amp. Turn on the SansAmp part and the issue is solved. However you also get a pretty decent comb filter sound in place when both the SansAmp and Brit sections are on at the same time with this one. Reminds me of the old Vox ToneLab. If i didn't have 2 pedal rigs to compare it to I may never have even noticed.
For me that was not the worst part. The attack of the noise floor sealed it for me. When you turn on the Brit section (with or without SansAmp) you get an acceptable amount of gain hiss. But turn on the Boost and it's curtains. Noise floor almost at the level of my guitar signal.
Now, you may be thinking all ODs/Dists and boosts will do this. Sadly it is not true to this level. My TS808DX into a CS9 into a delay doesn't come close to this noise. Neither does my Riot Reloaded into my RedHouse Mint Drive (or vice versa).
Now maybe your amp is different. This pedal could rock with solid state or a Fender. I don't know. What I do know is the delay with tap tempo and drift knob works great. A TON of fun. The SansAmp section can be set to super transparent (so you cannot even tell the difference between you amp and the SansAmp being on in a live application) and the built in Reverb is also excellent. It's the final 2 elements which cause this killer concept pedal to lose 2 stars for me.
