Tech 21 SansAmp Character Series Leeds Distortion Guitar Effects Pedal (423705)
Availability:

Loudmouth yobbo tones belt out in this killer Leeds distortion pedal.

The Tech 21 SansAmp Character Series Leeds distortion pedal takes its mojo from the most respected amp tones on both sides of the Atlantic. These guitar effects pedals don't just have a single character, they have the whole cast, plot, and curtain call.

The Tech 21 SansAmp Leeds pedal's massive headroom delivers the rich bell-like clean tones that drove the classic UK rock and pop bands of the '70s. Lean into high-gain gear for a bare-knuckle growl that retains plenty of definition. Push Leeds distortion pedal harder and suddenly you are live at Leeds.

The SansAmp guitar effect's Level and Drive controls work like a traditional, well-equipped amp. Low, Mid, and High are active, providing a wider array of tonal possibilities. The Character knob is a continuously-variable control that moves seamlessly between different model voicings, covering vintage, high-gain, and face-melting lead tones. The SansAmp Leeds pedal's Character and Mid controls, and the speaker emulations, are all engineered to personify the specific amplifier traits and speakers associated with each amplifier type.

The SansAmp technology captures the warm, rich, natural tones of the most sought-after tube amplifiers. Within the parameters of each model's particular design, the controls provide you with access to specific tone shaping characteristics within the tube amplifier sound spectrum.

SansAmp products are designed to work seamlessly in both recording and stage environments. They can be used with almost any instrument, for any music style, and for multiple applications. Record directly to tape and disc or enhance previously recorded tracks. For live performances, they can drive a power amp and speakers, augment your existing amplifier setup, or run directly into the mixer of a PA system.

  • Not touch sensitive

As reviewed by RB on 11/26/2010

First the good news.. this pedal is built like a tank and should withstand regular gigging. It also nails the various sounds that you're used to hearing on rock tunes recorded with a Hiwatt amp. The character knob is an amazing feature that can make this pedal re create guitar tones from The Who, Pink Floyd, Rush, early Led Zeppelin and Guided by Voices. Now the bad news- The pedal cleans up little if any when varying guitar volume or pick attack. You can't get complete control of the distortion like you would with a tube amp or many other pedals in this price range. It's either on or off. If Tech 21 could address this problem, I'd buy three- one to use and two for spares

  • Amazing when used correctly

I am a huge fan of the Tech 21 character series pedals. I own the Oxford, Blonde, Liverpool and Leeds. First off, these pedals are designed to emulate specific amps tone with an all analog signal. This makes them FEEL far closer to a real amp then a digital modeling pedal. Because these pedals are designed to color your tone to match an amp, they tend to work best going straight in to a recording device, PA or the effects loop of your amp. Look at this pedal as if it IS your preamp. If you run straight into the amp input, you may find the character of the pedal conflicting with the amps character. I almost sold my first character series pedal, the oxford, because it sounded congested when I ran it through my amp. So I tried straight into the PA and voila! I plugged in my wireless system so I could wander out to the front of house and hear it's tone and I can honestly say, it sounded better than my mic'd Orange amps I had previously used. I don't understand how the other reviewer said the Leeds is not touch sensitive. I mean, if you crank the gain to high gain singing lead tones then yeah a volume adjustment on your guitar and pick attack won't get you crystal clean notes. I would say you can go from crunch to clean with volume and picking dynamics or from high gain to light break up. This is typical to the many amps I've both played and owned. If you want clean + crunch + high gain live without adjusting your pedal. Set your Leeds to a crunch setting, use volume and dynamics to get clean and then use a boost or muff to get your lead or high gain tone. This pedal reacts like a real tube amp. It's designed to and does so better than any other emulation device I've heard or tried. Buy one and spend some time with it, the knobs are sensitive and take some getting used to but in exchange provide a huge array of great tones to choose from.
