Tonewood Pairing
A guitar's top is the primary filter and distributor of vibrating string energy through the guitar, which means it has a huge impact on its sound. Think of the top as a speaker driver. It's also one reason why the sounboard bracing architecture is important - it helps orchestrate the movement of the top and the voice of the instrument. The back and sides help flavor the overall sound. Koa is a fairly dense tropical hardwood with a strong midrange focus similar to mahogany, with a bit of extra top-end brightness and chime. The more koa is played and has a chance to open up - especially when the back and sides are also solid koa - it promises to grow warmer and sweeter, especially in the midrange.

Truly a fine instrument.

My younger brother got one of these and let me play it and I was really blown away by it. After that I had to have one. The local GC had one in stock and I ended up getting a killer deal on it. This is truly the nicest acoustic guitar I have ever played. It is beautiful to look at and is constructed extremely well. The Koa wood is really a thing of beauty and it definitely sets the guitar apart from the basic spruce or maple top acoustics that fill the walls of the GC acoustic room. I had liked other Taylors that I had played in the past but now I really feel like Taylor has got to be one of the finest modern guitar makers out there when it comes to this type of guitar. After a few weeks of playing I still notice more of the nuances to the sounds coming out of this thing. It really seems to have a resonance to it that I've never heard in any other acoustics. It has a beautiful, almost feedback quality to it when you let certain notes ring. Very musical and different kind of a blossoming effect that is really dependent upon your picking style and attack. It is a very bright sounding guitar especially when compared to the dreadnought or bigger body style guitars from martin or gibson. It suites my taste and playing style but probably isn't appropriate for some types of music. The electronics in this thing are killer. I only had it plugged in once when I was trying it out at GC but it sounded really great through an amp and the eq works really well.

Taylor KOA Rocks and Rolls

This guitar is built to perfection, it's smooth, your fingers just glide across the strings it is effortless! If you want a beautiful guitar that plays as well as it looks I highly recommend this beauty. I like finger style, blues, rock, and strumming along and this guitar does it all. Plug it in and the Fishman electronics kick in and you can kick it up a notch. Do not think about any other guitar this is it, this is the best out there. I've played Martin, Fender, PRS, etc and this acoustic/electric out does them all. If you can buy it do it and you will be in heaven like I am.

A "must-have" for the serious musician!

I have owned Taylors before and know that they are amazing instruments. When I saw this guitar on their website it was amazing! If this was anywhere near the tone and quality of my Taylor 414ce I was determined to get it. The wood, the tone, the island vine inlay, not too over-the-top or excessive. Still, it was an expensive guitar and I had to play one before parting with the Benjamins (and Grovers). Not all stores had this guitar because it was high-end but I found a GC that had one. I drove out to the location and met with the manager (that I spoke with earlier by phone; great guy, professional). The store was busy so he allowed me to go into his office (away from people playing "Joke on the Water" and "Stairway To Boredom" cranked to "11") to examine and play the guitar. From the first glance it was absolutely beautiful and beyond words. When I played it, it was like absolute magic. After a few songs I was in shock but tried to maintain my composure in front of the manager. (It was like selling a puppy: get it into the consumers' hands and they sell themselves) I then had to once again turn the guitar over to look at the wood grain and craftsmanship. The top was unique, one of a kind, grainy, flamey, ultra-deep clear finish, gorgeous. I had three words for the manager: "Ring me up." Since then not a day goes by that I regret the purchase. It gets daily exercise and is on the wall of my studio with other guitars but I catch myself staring at it often and thinking, "I own the world's most beautiful guitar!"
