Overview

There's something undeniably inviting about the Taylor GS Mini's scaled-down size, yet a single strum reveals the impressive voice of a full-size guitar. That mix of portability and musicality has proven to be a winning combination that fits into so many scenarios in life, from the couch to the campfire to the concert hall. It's not too big, it's not too precious, and it's not too expensive.

That broad-based accessibility has given it a resounding universal appeal, not to mention a built-in fun factor. The shorter 23-1/2-inch scale length makes forming chords a breeze yet gives the instrument plenty of snap and tuning stability for a rewarding playing experience. The acoustic-electric versions enjoy a sweet upgrade to ES2 electronics. All GS-Mini models include a durable hard bag built by Taylor for the optimal fit.

Tonewoods
A guitar's top is the primary filter and distributor of vibrating string energy through the guitar, which means it has a huge impact on its sound. Sitka spruce is the most prevalent guitar top wood of the modern era. It blends stiffness and elasticity in just the right proportions which translates into broad dynamic range with crisp articulation. Layered back and sides create a sturdy yet receptive platform for the vibrating string energy sent by the guitar's top. Layered wood is less susceptible to changes in temperature and humidity, making it an excellent choice for players who travel with their instruments or simply require more durability.

Electronics
Taylor's ES2 is a revolutionary pickup design that delivers the latest in Taylor’s ongoing innovation in acoustic guitar amplification. The heart of the Expression System 2 is Taylor’s patented behind-the-saddle pickup, which features three uniquely positioned and individually calibrated pickup sensors. The location of the sensors enables a more dynamic range of acoustic sound to be captured than ever before.

Together with Taylor’s custom-designed “professional audio”-grade preamp, this system produces exceptional amplified tone and responsiveness. On stage through a PA, plugged into your favorite acoustic amplifier, or direct into recording software, the Expression System 2 faithfully conveys the voice of your Taylor guitar. The Taylor Expression System 2 operates through a proprietary 9-volt battery compartment and easy-to-use volume, bass and treble controls.

What sets Taylor Guitars apart? Unmatched build quality, the most stable and playable necks, a vast array of tonal options, eco-conscious and ethically-sourced raw materials, and a lifetime of service and support.

Comments about Taylor GS Mini Koa Acoustic-Electric Guitar:

Wanting to learn to play, my husband and I were looking for a guitar that was a comfortable size for me and sounded good. I have small hands and short arms and needed something that wasn't too large. Since my husband is an experienced guitar player, he knew what to look for. We tried several different models, mostly thin bodied guitars, but just couldn't find the sound we wanted. He is used to his Martin full body dreadnought and thin bodied guitars just don't produce that sound. The sales associate eventually pulled out a Taylor GS Mini with a mahogany body to show us since we weren't finding anything that had the sound we wanted. Being more of a travel guitar size, I was first turned off from it because of the size. It felt like a kids guitar to me. However, when my husband began to play it our eyes lit up. We were both floored by the sound of the little guitar. But, there was one other guitar I wanted to look at in a neighboring city and I still wasn't sold on the GS Mini because of the size. I was having trouble getting past the fact that it felt like a kids guitar to me. The next day we drove to the other music store to see the other guitar and give it a try. While the guitar was beautiful and the sound was better than others we had looked at, it still didn't beat the GS Mini's sound. The Mini has such a rich and soulful sound and that sound is what really sold us on the guitar and the fact that it was a nice size for me. It's a little larger than a typical 3/4 size guitar but smaller than the Baby Taylor. I'm an artist so I also wanted a guitar that was aesthetically pleasing as well so we ordered the guitar in the Koa wood. My guitar is beautiful and sounds great. The more we play it the better it sounds. And yes, I said we.... my husband also likes to play it. However, he has large hands with thick fingers and does find it to be a little difficult to play because the frets and strings are a tad closer together.

Comments about Taylor GS Mini Koa Acoustic-Electric Guitar:

I am a pop singer/songwriter and I have owned an Ibanez, a Takamine, a few Fender guitars, and a Martin as well, which the Martin was by far my favorite - I had played on a Taylor 114ce and even a 214ce, and I honestly wasn't an overall fan of the feel of either of those. I was very close to buying another Martin since I had sold my other one, but as soon as I picked one of these up, I immediately fell in love - gorgeous tone, playability & feel - I'm not a huge fan of the dreadnought feel, so this body style and size is perfect, and the best part is that you don't lose any quality or volume because of the size - I recommend it for everyday playing, recording, live performances, and to amateur and experienced players alike - this guitar is by far my favorite, one of the best I've ever played on and the best I've ever owned.

    RECOMMENDATIONS:
I recommend upgrading the bridge pins to the Taylor Ebony bridge pins, purchasing an actual hard case for extra humidity and physical protection, and getting a humidifier to make sure your guitar stays in top shape. Also use the recommended Elixir strings, they're incredible and will keep your guitar sounding amazing. Go out and get this guitar! It's worth every penny. Well done Taylor.

Comments about Taylor GS Mini Koa Acoustic-Electric Guitar:

It's not the best in the taylor series but I have to say I use it alot. You have to get new tuners period. cant stand out of tune tones. Get a new saddle and nut bone. Your set. Good electronics can handle alot of power without feedback. Great for fingerpicking styles. Need hardshell case ( come on Taylor lame.) Good for working musician like ( Weddings/duo's/trio work.) Also keep the same strings it came with stock = Elixer nanoweb phospor bronze Med .013 - .056. It took forever to get that info. Good luck.

Comments about Taylor GS Mini Koa Acoustic-Electric Guitar:

I'm a newbie, but still a serious collector. Out of the several I've purchased, this is now my favorite to play. Everyday I look forward to practicing with it. Today I played for nearly 12 hours, and only stopped because I knew I needed to get some sleep so I'd be fresh for playing tomorrow. I seriously have a hard time putting this guitar down.

Comments about Taylor GS Mini Koa Acoustic-Electric Guitar:

The prior comments about this guitar are spot on -- it is a superb couch guitar and the koa version provides a bright, clear timbre that avoids that spruce twang. At this price point it is a no brainer.
Am writing this review to second a suggestion made by another reviewer -- to add ebony bridge pins (in place of the supplied plastic ones). Was unsure how much improvement this might make but, after a week of playing on the plastic version, ordered the ebony set from GC to see if they made any difference.
The sound of the revised instrument just seems "right." I notice in particular that the instrument is more resonant and I found it necessary to damp ringing strings that earlier had been less sonorous. Individual notes continue to be bright but have a certain degree of clarity that makes the koa sound even more precise.
So, as unlikely as it might seem, suggest you give this simple upgrade a try. The ebony pins are not expensive but had to order them direct as the local GC stores in my area do not stock them.
