Overview

Though they've been a staple of the Taylor line for years, Taylor's ovangkol 400 Series guitars continue to be discovered and embraced by players, thanks in part to a compelling full-range tone profile that's comparable to rosewood. Ovangkol's natural tonal breadth and dynamic range fit many different playing applications and body styles. An all-gloss body adds a burnished complexion that ties ovangkol's toasted golden color tones together with the buttery Sitka Spruce top. All 400 Series instruments ship in a deluxe hard shell case made by Taylor for optimal fit and protection.

Body Shape
A Taylor original, the Grand Auditorium helped establish the Taylor acoustic sound. The popular body style makes for a versatile guitar that yields ample volume in response to light fingerpicking, and reacts to medium strumming and flatpicking with a clear, balanced sound across the tonal spectrum. If you want a great all-purpose guitar, the GA is an excellent choice.

Tone Wood
Pairing A guitar's top is the primary filter and distributor of vibrating string energy through the guitar, which means it has a huge impact on its sound. Sitka Spruce is the most prevalent guitar top wood of the modern era. It blends stiffness and elasticity in just the right proportions which translates into broad dynamic range with crisp articulation. Solid ovangkol back and sides complement the top with a sound that's comparable to rosewood. Ovangkol is an African relative of rosewood that shares a wide tonal spectrum from lows to highs, but with a slightly fuller midrange and a bright treble that resembles koa.

Electronics
Taylor's ES2 is a revolutionary pickup design that delivers the latest in Taylor’s ongoing innovation in acoustic guitar amplification. The heart of the Expression System 2 is Taylor’s patented behind-the-saddle pickup, which features three uniquely positioned and individually calibrated pickup sensors. The location of the sensors enables a more dynamic range of acoustic sound to be captured than ever before.

Together with Taylor’s custom-designed “professional audio”-grade preamp, this system produces exceptional amplified tone and responsiveness. On stage through a PA, plugged into your favorite acoustic amplifier, or direct into recording software, the Expression System 2 faithfully conveys the voice of your Taylor guitar. The Taylor Expression System 2 operates through a proprietary 9-volt battery compartment and easy-to-use volume, bass and treble controls.

What sets Taylor Guitars apart? Unmatched build quality, the most stable and playable necks, a vast array of tonal options, eco-conscious and ethically-sourced raw materials, and a lifetime of service and support.

The current Taylor 414CE is the best guitar in this price range for my money hands down IMHO. In a world of laminate, man made material finger boards and satin finishes, (satin finish or half finished in my opinion. Current model of 414ce had an all gloss body) this guitar shines. I find the Ovangkol back and sides to be right down the middle. Plenty of punchy bass like Rosewood, but much smoother like a Mahogany. I always thought Taylors where too bright for my taste, but not this guitar with this tone wood combo. I believe it's a perfect mix. That leads to another comment I want to make. My experience has been purchasing inexpensive guitars for years, hoping I will be satisfied with the guitar as "good enough". I don't play out, but I do love to play. I am so glad I pulled the trigger and purchased this "all solid wood" instrument. If you feel the same and spend more time looking for the inexpensive one that will speak to you than you do playing, I would suggest either saving up or get on a offered payment plan and buy the guitar that you love in your hands. You will practice and play so much more and spend so much less time looking the next inexpensive guitar that is "good enough". Just my opinion. Thanks

My Taylor 414ce, brand new out of the box, had 5-6 blemishes on the body, which a GC employee tried to pass off as normal wood grain, said those are on all the guitars. So we went and looked and found no guitars with those ugly streaks. There was also a streak on the fretboard that covered about 3 frets. At least he didn't act like that was normal.

That's my whole review because I returned the guitar 12/27 and still haven't received the replacement, yet GC isn't worried about that, only worried about my review before they've even filled the order. You'd think someone could put 2 and 2 together...

Great Tone and Balance!

Comments about Taylor 400 Series 414ce Grand Auditorium Acoustic-Electric Guitar:

I bought the Taylor 414ce at the Cherry Hill, NJ location. This guitar just makes me want to play. I've had it for three months and play it everyday. It's already opening up and sounding better than it did when I brought it home. My advice for anyone looking for a guitar is to spring for this guitar if possible, because you will keep coming back to it and playing. The more you play the better you get. Love the staff at the Cherry Hill store too. They are very helpful and knowledgable!

I've had bad luck in the past buying an acoustic guitar, and having after market electronics put in. So I was determined to do it right this time and buy one with them built in. Not only does my 414ce sound great, but I love the looks, not to mention it fits like a glove when I'm holding it!

Comments about Taylor 400 Series 414ce Grand Auditorium Acoustic-Electric Guitar:

I have had this guitar for 5 years now and STILL love it. Plays just as smooth and sounds even more beautiful than it did from the start. I do NOT worry with humidity and such as I probably should and all it does is sit directly behind me at my computer desk so I can spin around and grab her to love on but man .... just a perfect fit for me PERIOD! If a person is contemplating the cost vs "is it REALLY worth it" ... I am telling you to try it out ... it will sell itself to you in a matter of seconds. I do NOT play professionally, do NOT have a group of friends that I jam with and it's always been me and my daughter with our Taylors just playing the songs we love that we listen to online. Expensive guitar for just "banging around" but have NO REGRETS WHATSOEVER and am actually looking to purchase ANOTHER Taylor because I've been so happy with mine. Only reason for purchasing another one is to have a full body and see about a different tone to change things up when I want. LOL ... and the one I'm about to purchase is the Taylor 616e with the maple wood. :-D Hope this helps you guys and gals who may be on the fence with this guitar and the cost. If you pick it up ... you'll never look back with regret!

Comments about Taylor 400 Series 414ce Grand Auditorium Acoustic-Electric Guitar:

I've owned my 414ce for a few years now. The tone is really starting to come together. It was nice to begin with but it gets better every month. I replaced the ebony bridge pins with bone and that really added some clarity to the wound strings. While recording, I put the ebony pins back in the B and E strings.

The playability is fabulous. I still have .012 strings on mine. It plays better than my Martin with .010's. The tone is nice but a bit vanilla right now. I've not found another acoustic guitar builder that can make a neck play better than Taylor.

The one big downfall for this guitar is the ES1 pickup system. Great idea in theory but it just doesn't get there for me. I installed a microphone inside the body of the guitar and that really made a huge difference in my acoustic sound and ability to capture the tone of the guitar.

The fit and finish are great. The factory set-up was spot on. I have had to reset the neck a few times over the past few years but this was expected. As the wood pieces settle into each other, things are going to change.

Maybe the most difficult part of owning this guitar, or any acoustic guitar, and living in a low humidity area is trying to keep enough water in the wood. It's a constant battle of sponges, hygrometers, thermometers, etc. But it is well worth the effort.

There are some nicer sounding acoustics out there but none that compares at this price point. ALSO, I challenge you to find another big name acoustic with all wood construction at this price point.

If your budget is a bit lower, you might look into Blueridge guitars. Great sound for less $$$.

Comments about Taylor 400 Series 414ce Grand Auditorium Acoustic-Electric Guitar:

I bought this in the spring if 2013 and it plays even better now than when I first brought it home. I just pulled it out the humidified case and it was barely out of tune after a year of sitting dorm-it. I actually went to GC looking to buy a Gibson songwriter but after playing the 414CE it was clearly a better feel for me. You know when a guitar has that feeling like it is an extension of your body, thats what I felt and instantly bought it. Here it is almost 4 years later and I like the guitar even more than the day I bought it. All I can say is you have to play a variety before making a purchase. I don't understand another person that gave this a bad review because of flaws, did you purchase the guitar online without even playing it? Why would you buy the guitar if it had flaws in the first place? If it was an online purchase who the heck would buy a very expensive guitar without actually playing it first, I don't know of anyone who would purchase a guitar that way, I don't care if it was $2,000 or $20, why make the purchase? Anyway I highly recommend playing this model and compare it to the Martin and Gibson higher end acoustics.

Comments about Taylor 400 Series 414ce Grand Auditorium Acoustic-Electric Guitar:

There's two different styles that I play: Strumming and Picking. This has very crisp highs and allows for excellent strumming and good finger picking. This plays the style of alternative music I like to play very well. I get compliments left and right from people hearing me play. Most of the time, I have to shift the attention to the guitar rather than me to let people know that the instrument does most of the work!

No regrets here. I've got 2 Martins and the Taylor has a sound all it's own that Martin can't match. The 414 ce is great all around for the "unplugged" sound. The electronics don't do this guitar justice, but Taylor isn't known for it's electronics.
