Overview

Taylor's 200 Deluxe Series delivers all the essentials of a great guitar - exquisite playability, a full and articulate voice, impeccable intonation up the neck, and Taylor's top-of-the-line, professional- grade pickup - at a price that's within reach of many. This collection strikes a sweet balance between tasteful design constraint and aesthetic variety, bringing Taylor's signature tonal clarity and playability into a stage-worthy mix of guitar options. The Deluxe moniker refers to the addition of a fully-glossed body as opposed to a glossy top with satin back and sides. In addition, all 200 Deluxe Series guitars ship in a deluxe hardshell case made by Taylor for optimal fit and protection.

Body Shape
A Taylor original, the Grand Auditorium helped establish the Taylor acoustic sound. The popular body style makes for a versatile guitar that yields ample volume in response to light fingerpicking, and reacts to medium strumming and flatpicking with a clear, balanced sound across the tonal spectrum. If you want a great all-purpose guitar, the GA is an excellent choice.

Tonewood
A guitar's top is the primary filter and distributor of vibrating string energy through the guitar, which means it has a huge impact on its sound. Solid Hawaiian koa is a hardwood that produces a natural compression, yielding more of a controlled "roll-in" effect to a note. The compression evens out a lively attack for a more balanced response. It delivers strong fundamentals with clear and direct focus - similar to mahogany - but with extra top-end shimmer and chime. Layered Hawaiian koa back and sides create a visually appealing and complementary platform for the vibrating string energy sent by the guitar's top. Layered wood is less susceptible to changes in temperature and humidity, making it an excellent choice for players who travel with their instruments or simply require more durability.

Electronics
Taylor's ES2 is a revolutionary pickup design that delivers the latest in Taylor’s ongoing innovation in acoustic guitar amplification. The heart of the Expression System 2 is Taylor’s patented behind-the- saddle pickup, which features three uniquely positioned and individually calibrated pickup sensors. Because the pickup doesn't sit under the saddle, the bottom of the saddle comes in full contact with the bridge, allowing all the nuance of the guitar's tone to come through clearly whether playing acousticly or plugged-in. The location of the sensors enables a more dynamic range of acoustic sound to be captured than ever before while playing plugged-in. Together with Taylor’s custom-designed “professional audio”-grade preamp, this system produces exceptional amplified tone and responsiveness. On stage through a PA, plugged into your favorite acoustic amplifier, or direct into recording software, the Expression System 2 faithfully conveys the voice of your Taylor guitar. The Taylor Expression System 2 operates through a proprietary 9-volt battery compartment and easy-to-use volume, bass and treble controls.

Hardshell case included.

I perform regularly in Jacksonville FL, and this immediately became my main guitar. I've bought, sold, and traded so many guitars looking for the right one that it has become a joke in the family. I don't believe that I ever wrote a review on any of them. This one is a keeper. I've owned two other Taylor's with the es2 electronics, and both of those had a lot of string noise and boominess plugged in. The pickup probably needed adjusted on those, but this on is perfect out of the box. I didn't keep the other two. The tone is not overly bright. I've played a few other non Taylor koa guitars that were too chimey. This one is sweet and warm, but not too dark like a mahogany top. It is an awesome looking and sounding instrument. I've played it at three solo gigs in the two weeks that I have owned it so far. It was set up right out of the box. It was expensive but I expect to have it a long time and get my use out of it. I view laminate as a plus for durability, and I care mostly about plugged in sound anyway. I play acoustic rock..Everything from James Taylor to AC/DC. This guitar is versatile and performs well when strumming, finger picking and with power chords. If your around when this guitar gets its first scratch, you will see a grown man cry. If I sell this guitar then it is because I have a guitar buying/trading disease that is beyond help. The only thing better than this guitar would be a full head of hair, but that is wishful thinking.

My guitar has a gorgeous Koa top (much nicer than the promo pics), the ebony fret board has a deep black color across the entire neck, and the fretwork is flawless. The Expression System 2 is wonderful, and the action (on this particular instrument) is perfect. So, why did I only give it a rating of 3?

First, I take issue with where Taylor cut corners on the construction of this instrument. Upon inspection of the interior, I noticed that this series (and the 100-series) uses a narrow, cheap-looking wood edge strip to connect the top, sides and/or back to one another. On any acoustic guitar I've ever owned that was $1,000 or more, this piece was always a hand-formed, striated strip with a large surface area to attach the rest of the guitar to. The form piece used inside my guitar looks like a thin, inexpensive strip of barn wood that was cut in a junior high shop class. My obvious concern with this will be durability down the road – especially given that Koa can be a fussy wood as it ages.

My other beef with this particular guitar is that the nut was attached a hair off, so the high E string has a habit of sliding off the edge of the fret board if I'm doing pull offs. On a $500 guitar, this might be expected. Mine was three times that amount - as an import!

I'm new to the guitar-playing scene, but am so glad I sprung for such a high quality and beautiful instrument right out of the gate. I love playing it, handling it, and listening to it's bright, crisp, and sweet sound. Whether I'm playing loud or barely audible, it's amazing sound is hypnotic. After several months wandering from GC stores in Medford, Reno,Vegas, then finally Portland- looking for an upgrade, I could no longer resist when I discovered the Koa.----In summary, all I can say is Wow!

Comments about Taylor 200 Series Deluxe 224ce-K Grand Auditorium Acoustic-Electric Guitar:

This guitar is love at first sight. First of all, the finish of this guitar is Gorgeous!! In my opinion, Koa is probably one of the best looking woods for a guitar, and on top of that it sounds beautiful. The neck of this guitar is great for finger picking and all styles of play. I also love the action of this guitar, there will be no adjusting needed for me. I recommend this guitar to anyone who is looking around the 1.5k budget. The price may seem like a lot, but it is totally worth it! I've tried many guitars (and have owned plenty) including, breedlove, gibson, fender, and martin. But this Taylor is something else. Go check one out for yourself!!!

Comments about Taylor 200 Series Deluxe 224ce-K Grand Auditorium Acoustic-Electric Guitar:

I purchased the guitar for my daughter's 25th birthday. I'm basically a jazz guitarist and have been at it for around 40 years and have played on many "jazz boxes". My daughter enjoys singing and playing Christian folk music. After visiting Guitar Center many times and playing on many of their display guitars I developed a love for the sound and feel of the Taylors. One day I mentioned to the salesman that I was looking for a guitar for my daughter. I believe she had played on one of the slightly smaller Taylor models some time ago and was comfortable with it. At the time she was playing on a shallow bowl Ovation. The salesman recommended the Deluxe 224ce-K Grand Auditorium in Koa . I played on it for an hour or two and fell in love with it myself. The model at the store had a lighter colored stripe down the middle which I did not care for so I had the store order another one for me. The one I received is very beautiful Koa with some curly grain on the front. It sound and plays beautifully. I honestly wouldn't mind owning for myself but I personally prefer a little larger size box. The sound is bright but has a sweet mid tone as well. This guitar came from the factory set up very nicely, no fret buzz or intonation problems. The neck seemed a little thinner than some of the other acoustics I've played so it fingered very easily. Amplified in a Fishman Loudbox Mini at the store, it sounded wonderful. I'll have to say that Taylor seems to be consistent in keeping within their own specs; the model I ordered felt exactly like the display one I played in the store. The hard shell case included is decent but it is made of plastic; a wooden one would have been nicer.

Comments about Taylor 200 Series Deluxe 224ce-K Grand Auditorium Acoustic-Electric Guitar:

I was so ready to love a particular Martin that I had been studying. But- This Koa Taylor just does it for me. I can't quit admiring its beauty until I pick it up then I can't quit playing it. This guitar instantly improved my playing as I had become accustomed to some buzzing from my 28 year old ovation. Barre chords became cleaner and helped broaden my library as I could now stand to hear myself play them. Haven't plugged in yet but I'm excited to hear the results when I do. This is a great guitar and I'm so ready to hear it age as my plastic backed ovation never could!

This is my 3rd acoustic guitar. I have been playing for over 3 years and wanted to treat myself to a quality built guitar that would not break the bank. This Taylor guitar exceeds all the competition at half the price. The Koa wood is an eye grabber. The sound is clear and warm. As time goes on the Koa wood will improve like a quality bottle of wine. I was expecting to pay $2,500 -$3k..... Guitar Center is practically giving this guitar away. This is a must have Taylor!

This guitar is made in their Tecate factory in Mexico. Don't let that discourage you. The Tecate factory was specifically designed to build quality Taylor guitars. Design team and QC leadership are the same folks who run the El Cajon factory. Facilities are 45 mins apart. Keep in mind a Taylor guitar made at either factory is still a quality Taylor guitar. I absolutely love everything about this guitar.

I've played both professionally and to entertain myself for many many years, I've owned a fair amount of different guitars, so with that being said..... people who know me know i'm sort of picky. I had a buddy call while he was at Guitar Centers all excited and told me "You need to get down here now, I found the perfect guitar". A few weeks later, we rode down together and he handed me this "amazing guitar", I'll admit I did like the feel and sound of it immediately, but thought if i'm gonna spend some money, I'd get what I wanted (I was actually looking for a Gibson Dove). we had a guitar stand sitting there, so we grabbed a mid priced guitar, I played it and sit it on the stand. Each time I played a different guitar that exceeded the guitar on the stand, I would put that guitar on the stand as the standard to exceed. I played just about every acoustic in the place, from no names to very high end Martins and Gibsons, it literally came down to 2 Taylors. I picked the 224ce-K. over the other Taylor primarily because of the appearance. The 224ce-K, is well made, plays well and sounds great. I have no regrets.

Comments about Taylor 200 Series Deluxe 224ce-K Grand Auditorium Acoustic-Electric Guitar:

I've been going in to my local guitar center for the past year and a half and played the Martin DCPA4 pretty much once a week. The day finally came when i had enough saved up to buy the guitar of my dreams, and it wasn't there. Disappointed, i almost left the store.

My self being an undisciplined impulse buyer, i didn't want to leave empty handed. Tried the Taylor 214, and it sounded ok, but sound was very cheap sounding plugged in. since most of my playing is live performance, plugged in sound is KEY. Tried the Gibson j-15, and put it back on the rack. just wasn't for me with the sticky neck.

Then i saw the 224. When i saw it my eyes lit up. I picked it up and as soon as i did, i knew it felt right. Unplugged sounded awesome, but now the real test. how did it sound plugged in? Even better! I told them to box it up because i found what i wanted. I played that Martin a lot, but when i played this Taylor, it felt like it blew the martin out of the water.

The next day i had a pretty big show, and of course it sounded amazing. I played 2 shows and 1 pickers circle with it in the week that iv'e had it so far, and the feedback is incredible. People are very surprised when i tell them it's a 200 series. they all think it's at least a 400 series. The lows on this guitar are AMAZING.

If you're stuck and thinking about getting this guitar, don't think any longer. Especially if you arent aware of KOA wood. Do your research and you will see you don't find KOA on cheap guitars. usually they're on $4,000 guitars. You get extreme value with this beautiful instrument.

After getting my Taylor Mini Koa, and being thoroughly happy with it, I decided on a full size electric-acoustic. I watched this one for awhile. I finally got one and am I glad I did. Both have made me want to practice more. It sounds so good. The neck is a dream come true. Fingering chords is easier because of the thinner neck, and it just plain feels good. The smoothest neck of all my guitars. The frets and strings feel great. I wasn't sure how I'd feel about such a highly glossed wood, but after seeing it in person, it's one of the most beautiful I've seen. I'm glad the case isn't wood as living in Colorado is a challenge with wood. I don't need to worry about the case too. The inside lining is extremely soft. I'm very lucky to own this guitar.
