Taylor's popular 814ce offers players the ultimate all-purpose guitar. The revoicing of the 800 Series has brought greater warmth, a more mature midrange, and a looser, more luxurious low end to the 814ce, thanks in part to the customized bracing and a new, custom-calibrated Elixir HD Light string-gauge set.

Taylor's most popular and versatile body shape, the mid-size Grand Auditorium arrived in 1994 bearing refined proportions that fell between a Dreadnought and Grand Concert. While the bigger Dreadnought was traditionally considered a flatpicker's guitar and the smaller Grand Concert catered to fingerstylists, the GA was designed to deliver on both fronts. The shape produced an original acoustic voice that was big enough to handle medium-strength picking and strumming, yet with impressive balance across the tonal spectrum, especially in the midrange, producing clear, well-defined notes that suited both strumming and fingerstyle playing.

The GA's overall presence tracks well with other instruments both in a studio mix and on stage, and singer-songwriters have embraced its utility both for composing and traveling with one guitar. Expression System 2
The Taylor Expression System 2 (ES2) is a revolutionary pickup design that delivers the latest in Taylor's ongoing innovation in acoustic guitar amplification. The heart of the Expression System 2 is Taylor's proprietary behind-the-saddle pickup (patent pending), which features three uniquely positioned and individually calibrated pickup sensors. The location of the sensors enables a more dynamic range of acoustic sound to be captured than ever before. Together with Taylor's custom-designed "professional audio"-grade preamp, this system produces exceptional amplified tone and responsiveness. On stage through a PA, plugged into your favorite acoustic amplifier, or direct into recording software, the Expression System 2 faithfully conveys the voice of your Taylor guitar.

Behind the ES2 Design: Rethinking the Piezo Pickup
For decades, piezo-electric transducers have been positioned under the saddle of a guitar based on the long-held belief that the string and top vibration cause the saddle to "bounce" up and down. But Taylor's electronics team, led by developer David Hosler, discovered that the vertical movement is actually heavily restricted, and that the saddle gets "locked down" due to the string tension's downward pressure. That's why a traditional under-saddle pickup with piezo-electric crystals often responds with a sound often characterized as thin, brittle, brash or synthetic, especially with more aggressive playing.

The saddle's natural range of movement as the guitar is being played is actually back and forth like a pendulum. That revelation led Taylor's design team to relocate the crystals from under the saddle to behind it. The new positioning enables the crystals to respond more naturally to the guitar's energy as it is transferred through the saddle. Three pickup sensors are installed behind the saddle, through the bridge, with three tiny Allen screws that calibrate the position of the sensors in relation to the saddle.

Like the original Expression System, the ES2 features the same volume and tone control knobs. The preamp is similar but with a slightly different gain structure. As a result it will be about 25 percent hotter, which is more in line with other pickups. This makes it plug-and-play friendly both for artists and live sound mixers.

  • Not your grandmother's Taylor

    I have always been a fan of Martins due to their "bass heavy" reputation. Taylors always sounded shrill and too light for my style of playing. My most recent gigging guitar was a Martin GPCPA4. It sounded great... when it wasn't plugged in. There were plenty of features on it that could make it sound like any guitar you wanted- except itself. It sounded dead when it was plugged in. The neck wasn't quite as playable as what I wanted in an acoustic. I wanted a guitar that I could record with and play live. Enter the 814ce. I was intrigued by all the new changes- new bracing, lighter finish, new pickups, new strings. Here are the results: The guitar is much lighter than I expect and very easy to handle. The thin finish really opens up the sound. It has more presence and the bass truly resonates through the whole body. You can actually feel the sitka spruce moving when you hit a low string. The new strings add a more powerful presence as you play up the neck (more so than traditional Taylors). This guitar is the most dynamically responsive instrument I've played. And that doesn't change when you plug it in. I run mine through a Bose L1 system and was literally blown away by the ES2 system. It sounds incredible. I've never heard any guitar sound this good plugged in. It actually sounds like the unamplified guitar- just... amplified. As far as aesthetics go, I was hesitant about the lighter ebony fretboard. Don't be. It adds a very unique feel/character to the guitar. The rosewood pick guard is another unique feature that sets this guitar apart from any other. I have owned the guitar for a month now and it has been through 4 gigs and several recording sessions. The pick guard is still intact with no scratches. BOTTOM LINE: If you enjoy a responsive, dynamic acoustic guitar that has an extremely full sound and is very playable, this is your instrument.

    I've played many acoustics and was always somewhat disappointed as I knew there was a better sound to be had. This guitar delivers that acoustic sound I always craved. Each note and chord is so crisp and clear. The sound just really pops (Hate that trendy "it pops" term but is applies very well here. Please forgive me.). You can hear and feel the body resonating as you play. I kinds want to get it away from my body because I feel like I'm dampening its sound and holding it back. And of course the neck is all Taylor. Smooth as silk. In my opinion, acoustics neck don't get any better/easier than on Taylor's. I had their low end 114ce before this which is my practice guitar and a great guitar for the money. The difference is unmistakable and kind of sad for 114ce. The only problem for me on the 814 is it's too nice for the likes of me. I feel like if I nick or chip it, the guitar police find me and take me behind the barn beat me severely. It just occurred to me that I haven't plugged it in yet, probably because it sounds so good natural.
