      Taylor 316ce Sapele/Spruce Grand Symphony Acoustic-Electric Guitar (109728048)

A bold guitar with a Sitka spruce top, sapele back and sides, and Taylor Expression System electronics.

The Taylor 316ce Sapele/Spruce Grand Symphony Acoustic-Electric Guitar offers the richness of the solid-wood acoustic experience. Sapele shares mahogany’s lively tonal response and, together with a gloss-finish Sitka spruce top, rings out with a brightness and clarity that give these guitars a definitive Taylor voice. Black binding flanks sapele’s ribbon-like grain, with large pearl fretboard dots adding a traditional touch.

Grand Symphony (GS)
Body Width: 15" / Body Depth: 4-3/8" / Body Length: 19-1/2"
The ultimate Taylor strummer.

The Grand Symphony shape joined the line in 2006 and delivers Taylor’s boldest, richest acoustic voice. Think of it as a Grand Auditorium with a turbo boost, thanks to expanded physical dimensions, including a slightly wider waist and a bigger lower bout. Strummers and pickers with a driving attack will love the fullness, volume and sustain. Yet for such a robust voice, the GS is also clear and responsive to fast picking runs or a light fingerstyle touch, so if you’re a dynamic player, this shape is a true contender. And the big voice doesn’t come at the expense of balance. The piano-like bass, meaty midrange, and thick, shimmering highs blend seamlessly. If you like a lush, potent guitar tone that has the horsepower to compete with other acoustic cannons out there, the GS shape is a worthy choice.

Origin: West Africa
An alternative tonewood that joined the Taylor fold over a decade ago. It’s sometimes mistakenly referred to as African mahogany because it closely resembles the West African wood khaya, which is commercially known as African mahogany. Sapele is a highly sustainable, relatively fast-growing wood. Tonally, it does everything that mahogany does, with a little extra treble zing. Taylor will be able to offer it for a long, long time.

Expression System®
Natural Sound Made Simple
People love the clear, full acoustic tone of their Taylors. Why should it be any different when they plug in? That’s why Taylor spent several years developing their own onboard acoustic pickup and preamp. Taylor’s ground-breaking Expression System (ES) was designed to naturally amplify the warm acoustic sound of your guitar.

The ES is an all-magnetic acoustic guitar pickup system that works like a microphone to produce a pure signal and a warm, natural acoustic sound. When you plug in, you'll hear the sound of your guitar, not the sound of the pickup. No complicated controls. No tone simulators. Just a clean amplified acoustic guitar sound supported by three simple controls — volume, bass and treble.

Breakthrough Technology
Years of research brought a simple realization: Nothing sounds as true and musical as a microphone. With that as a starting point, Taylor’s David Hosler led the team responsible for the Expression System's breakthrough technology. Utilizing a unique Dynamic Body Sensor mounted to the soundboard, a Dynamic String Sensor embedded beneath the fretboard, and a discrete preamp, the advanced ES technology is unlike any other guitar pickup system.

Integrated Design
The ES was designed in-house, alongside our acoustic guitars, which allowed Taylor to build the ES seamlessly into the design of the guitar, for an integrated pickup system unlike any other. From the design and location of the body and string sensors to the voicing of the preamp, the ES is fully optimized for the Taylor sound. The elegant design, including the non-intrusive control knobs, also preserves the aesthetic of a Taylor guitar.

  • Plays like a more expensive guitar!

As reviewed by Alexander Wheelock on 4/22/2014

I'm not a great guitarist. I'm probably an average intermediate player. I'm a strummer and a (lousy) singer. I occasionally fingerpick and play stuff with some complexity, but I'm just doing it for fun and to entertain (or torture) my family. After 16 years, it was time to upgrade to a "grown-up" guitar and so I set out to learn all that I needed to know. In talking to lots of knowledgeable folks and playing lots of different brands, I gravitated towards Taylor for their high quality, consistency, and playability. When it was time to pick my woods and body style, I went towards Sapele and Ovangkol because they were mostly in my price range, so 300/400 series. Body style was tougher because I always played a dread and was used to strumming medium strings with a lot of low end. However, in playing the GAs (x14) and GCs (x12), I loved the comfortable feel and ease of play of those body shapes. For me, the compromise was the GS (x16). I couldn't find a 316ce locally, so I ordered one so I could A/B in store. I was not disappointed. In my opinion, the 316ce beat out the 414ce and even some of the 500 series models I played. It has a powerful low end, a dynamic mid-range, but works great as a strummer. It's easy to play and it looks amazing. Plugged in was equally impressive. I liked it better than its GA cousin (314ce). Again, I grew up on bassy dreads, so this was a perfect compromise for me--a strummer with a more dynamic middle and yet easier to play and easier to look at. I've owned it for a few weeks now and it's only sounding better as it gets worn in. I have zero buyer's remorse and I would certainly recommend to my friends who come from similar style backgrounds as me. Hope this helps!

  • well rounded guitar

As reviewed by MARK MORROW on 11/23/2012

I have had my 316ce for a year now and I just love the guitar. the GS body and wood combination work well together providing a nice balanced tone with a slight tilt on the top end, gives the 316 a little sparkle. The 316ce is a dynamic guitar that plays very loud easily,it is just an awesome strummer and flat picker. It is at home with finger style playing as well but with the medium strings on it, finger style playing takes a bit more effort than Taylor X14 guitars. I own a 514ce and a 914ce, and the smaller body shape and light strings make them easier to play finger style. Even though the 316ce is Taylor's entry level solid wood guitar, it is just as well built and easy to play as my 914, just more economical woods and not as frilly with inlays and such. Just a great all around guitar the sounds great plugged in or not, and easy to play. If you are looking for guitar to that will do just about any style of playing well the 316ce is a good choice.
