TASCAMâs iU2 is a premium sound quality audio interface for the iPad, iPhone and iPod Touch. It includes all of the features of TASCAMâs best-selling USB audio interfaces, including a pair of precision audio microphone inputs. The XLR inputs have phantom power for use with high-quality condenser microphones. These feed an onboard microphone preamp and A/D converter for better sound performance than those built into iPhone and iPad â true stereo recording with low noise and less tendency to distort. The inputs also accept line-level signals or you can plug a guitar or bass directly into your device.
In addition to compatibility with iOS devices, the iU2 also works with Mac and Windows computers. A zero-latency monitoring path allows musicians to hear themselves directly through the unit, without any distracting delay. Both MIDI in and out are provided to easily interface with synths and drum machines, and a digital output connects to digital mixers or recorders.

There aren't a lot of choices if you want the maximum number of recording inputs and outputs for an iOS device. There are plenty of guitar jacks, and dock mics, and even MIDI interfaces, but the only other device I know of that has a pair of switchable XLR/line/guitar jacks, a pair of line outputs, a separate headphone out, as well as MIDI I/O is the Alesis iO Dock. That dock has a nice solid frame, and a slightly more professional compliment of jacks, but it also requires wall power, and cannot be used as an interface/soundcard with a regular computer. The Tascam iUS fills that more portable and versatile niche by needing no wall outlet, and functioning as a class compliant (no special drivers) USB sound device. A USB battery or wall charger can be used to thru-charge your iOS device, and is needed to power 48V condenser mics, but the iUS will work quite effectively without them. Even if you do need phantom power, having the battery option is handier than needing a wall outlet nearby. Build quality is light but adequate. The smaller level control knobs wiggle a bit more than I'd prefer, so be cautious tossing this in a bag with other gear without any padding, but the iUS is far from cheesy. The pre-amps are nothing tremendous, but they do the job (they're not comparable in dynamic range or headroom to a "real" preamp, but if that's what you need, use one upstream of the iUS's input). Overall, the Tascam iUS, like it's little sister the iXZ, is a nice bit of portable gear which will serve you well for special jobs.
