I bought this interface a couple weeks and, despite only having time to record with it for 2 days, I must say that it is quite the little power house. Using a $20 cardioid and an equally cheap dynamic mic recording into separate, respective tracks on Logic Express, I was able to achieve semi-high quality recordings of drums. Plugging a guitar or bass into the Tascam US-800 is really quite simple, and the instrument sound is reproduced truly and with clarity on the DAW you're using (or should be using). When paired with professional software like Logic or Pro-Tools, the software amps sound amazing when applied to the guitar/bass. Vocals were also very crisp when I used the cardioid and dynamic microphone to record into one track. The interface unit itself is also quite small, which helps it fit into the small niche available for it in my home studio. One minor minor gripe: I wish there was a power switch for it instead of manually plugging it in and then unplugging it for every recording session. I can't really say anything for the included Cubase LE4 software as I use Logic Express, which far surpasses Cubase LE4, for all of my musical recording needs. All in all, the Tascam US-800 is an awesome interface that will serve you well for making demos of songs and even professional quality songs, provided you spend a fortune on the other equipment needed for recording. Bottom Line: The US-800 is a great recording tool for any musician looking to break out into recording their own music without breaking the bank. P.S. When I acquire better microphones, I will update this review with the new perspective they will give me on the US-800. Thanks for reading!

I own many interfaces, and this one has a poor driver and is way over priced. But it sounds ok and it is easy to use. The driver blue screens my computer now and then and it says right on the blue screen its the US-800 driver that caused the error. I doubt Tascam will do the right thing and rewrite this driver into something that works. So my interface in back in the box and I am using my US-1800 as a USB interface. The US-1800 is solid and the driver is very different. The two interfaces are not from the same design teams to be sure. I like the US-1800 and use it daily. I dont like the US-800 and dont use it. So there you go.

Fooled Me Guitar Center

By Devin Snelling

from California

Comments about TASCAM US-800 USB Audio/MIDI Interface:

Okay so this interface looked like the best thing I have ever seen. But then I researched it a little more to find out that the recording quality guitar center says it is, isn't really it. It is actually only up to 96kHz/24-bit instead of 192kHz. Almost tricked me guitar center. So this is still a great investment but there are better ones out there for the same price.

Low Latency, Great Hardware, and foolproof drivers

By Alex Newton

from Arlington, TX

Comments about TASCAM US-800 USB Audio/MIDI Interface:

I bought my Tascam US-800 about a month ago and I cannot say enough good things about it. First off Guitar Center price matched the interface as well as a bluebird mic I bought that day and I got them both for $200 each!! The interface comes with plenty of reading material to get you started recording. Upon recommendation, I installed the latest drivers and updates from Tascam's website and then installed the interface. This made the process flawless and it was working within 5 minutes. All 6 analog inputs have 48+volts and I verified this with my multimeter. The controls are nice and the unit is light yet very solid feeling. I also was pleased to find that the drivers allow the use of all the inputs to be separately recorded and recognized by the DAW. Cubase le 5 is great! The install was seamless and the program is a more than adequate application for almost every musician. Also, many people complain about the hassle of obtaining the product key online but I had no problem at all. The time between unpacking the equipment (including a new mic and misc. recording gear) and the first track I recorded was under 1 hour and I kid you not. FYI I am using Windows 7 with a dual core processor, 4GB ram, 500GB hdd, and its just a 1 year old ASUS laptop. Words of advice, adjust your computer settings to performance, don't run background programs while recording, check the latency and input specs in the interface control panel every time you connect the interface as they reset, use the newest driver from tascam, if you power down your computer then unplug the device as you would any other usb device, check your device setup and VST connections in Cubase when you are not getting a signal from the interface and make sure the US-800 driver has been selected, and most importantly be sure you are aware of the stereo or mono input of your audio. Sorry for such a long review but I am thrilled with the quality of this interface package. There are absolutely no in depth reviews for this product online so I wanted to be sure that everyone had the chance to safely purchase such a great interface. Enjoy and remember... EQ and Compression are best in moderation. Good day

You Get What you Pay For

By Miles

Comments about TASCAM US-800 USB Audio/MIDI Interface:

I was excited to get my US800 out of the box. It has a good build, and does everything you need it to do. And when I plugged it in it worked great. 20mins into my recording session, on a single track, only one microphone plugged in, the headphone output was heavily delayed, another 20mins and the recordings became increasingly delayed into my DAW. I unplugged it for a min, and reconnected, worked perfectly again. But sure enough it began to fail again. Its a great concept and I think Tascam is on the right track, but this is not a reliable product.

Comments about TASCAM US-800 USB Audio/MIDI Interface:

I use osx, it's practically flawless. a few things do bother me a bit, no on off switch. and in osx at least it's incompatible with sleep mode. other than that all 6 inputs work and the two headphone jacks work. i have to say for the price its gotta be the best interface i've used. if your on a budget id suggest it.

Very difficult to set up

By Harry Marinakis

from West Virginia

Comments about TASCAM US-800 USB Audio/MIDI Interface:

The Tascam US-800 comes with Cubase recording software. There were a lot of difficulties setting up the hardware and software, and getting everything to properly interface with my computer. I have a new 3.2 GHz computer with 12GB RAM. Be sure to update all of the appropriate drivers, including your sound card and the Tascam US-800. There seems to be a glitch in that my USB 3.0 port doesn't recognize the Tascam unless it was plugged in when the computer was booted. When I specified stereo inputs, Tascam defaulted to mic jacks 1 & 2 regardless of whether or not I specified other ports as being the stereo ports. The list goes on and on and on. The Cubase software manual is very poorly written and difficult to get started. I recommend getting something like the Idiot's Guide to Cubase and avoiding the manufacturer's instruction manual altogether. The manufacturer of Cubase is Steinberg, and they will not support their software if it is bundled with hardware like the Tascam. So you will need to work with Guitar Center to sort out the interface problems between Tascam and Cubase. However... Once I got all fo the initial problems ironed out, the system works great.

Awesome gear!

By Brent Long

from Costa Mesa, California

Comments about TASCAM US-800 USB Audio/MIDI Interface:

This is sort of a response to the negative reviews. I've been using this unit for about 4 months and I upgraded to Cubase 6. The blue screen message appears when you are doing something wrong. It came up on me when I was trying to run 64bit driver to 32bit cubase. This is an easy fix or you may not even get the message if you hook it up right. The clicking noise is called "clipping." Depending on your guitar pickups you'll need to adjust your gain like any other AI. I've used a mic, two guitars and electric drums hooked up to midi, recording simutaneously and no problems. The sounds I'm getting out of this unit with Cubase 6 can rival and thing out there. Yes, you Pro Tools. All in all there is a learning curve to any setup you are going to get. Don't slam a unit because you give up too early on it with the first issues that arrive. I highly recommend this unit.

Excellent!!! Great product

Comments about TASCAM US-800 USB Audio/MIDI Interface:

Now I never write reviews but I have to write one for the us-800. I have been looking for something like this for awhile. After I found it, I did what you are doing right now looking at reviews on it. Let me say all the good reviews are true and the bad ones are, well Iۡll just say itۡs their opinion. Iۡm glad I went with my gut on this one. I read a lot of bad reviews on this but when you read closely it sounded to me like it might have been something they wasnۡt looking for or didnۡt understand how it works. Now I using this interface a lot and it has never failed, locked up, stopped working, or had driver issues. It has been a work horse all the way. I running windows 7 64bit 2.2dual 8gig of ram HP laptop and I get very low latency and excellent sound. Iۡm using Nuendo 4, Cubase 5le, cakewalk sonar producer 8.5, all programs work excellent with it. I have used Steinbergۡs product for a long time, and have a lot of experience with their software. Now I know itۡs not the best to most people due to it not being the best in user friendliness, but once you learn it youۡll be hooked for life. The Tascam us-800 is excellent for home studio use. I use it for the portability, I do a lot of small time recording for friends and some live recording for them as well, and this has been the best interface for that, by far. Iۡve been a sound engineer for 22 years and own a lot of high end stuff, and I love to compare and this will hang with some stuff I paid $1200 for. Is it the best thing out there, no, but it is the best for the price!! So if you are like me and thinking if you should buy this or not, all have to say is this. If it meets your needs then buy it now before the sale is over!! All in all the interface works great for windows 7 and Cubase/Nuendo, excellent sound, good build, nice look, and 6 mic inputs what more could you want for this price!!

Almost Did The Job

By Norberto Luna

Comments about TASCAM US-800 USB Audio/MIDI Interface:

As a music producer and a studio owner Tascam drop the ball with this interface. The sound coming out is great!!!! But this interface for some odd reason always get bumped offline and the only way to get it back online is to reboot and for what? Just to use it for15 to 20 minutes. Hopefully Tascam comes up with a solution. And by what's posted on the internet I'm not the only one with this problem. I wouldn't advise you to purchase this interface until Tascam has solved all the bugs. A Thumbs up to Guitar Center there service has always been excellent.
