Overview

The Tascam US-144MKII seamlessly continues the worldwide success of its predecessor US-144 offering better recording quality from a USB MIDI interface further reduced in size. Since it doesn't require an additional power supply, this portable audio interface is perfect for creating 4-channel recordings from analog and digital sources with a laptop computer.

Two XLR microphone inputs with switchable phantom power and high-quality preamps are the basis for good-sounding recordings, while input signals can be listened to by headphones with zero latency. Line-level and digital sources or an instrument can be connected as well. The Tascam USB MIDI interface has separate level controls for the line and headphones outputs, a mono switch, MIDI input and MIDI output, as well as a coaxial SPDIF output.

The US-144MKII interface supports sample rates up to 96 kHz at 24-bit resolution. While commercial audio CDs are produced at 44.1 kHz/16-bit, this interface offers you more than double the sample rate which means more detail for your recordings. (If you're fine with two audio channels and don't need a digital I/O, have a look at the Tascam US-122MKII.)

This is a great interface. Setup was easy. Recorded audio sounds great. I got it mainly for the S/PDIF input so I can mixdown from my old Tascam 788. However, the US-144 is going to be a great transition to computer-based recording. Cubase LE4 is included with the hardware. I'm amazed that such a powerful program comes with the US-144. Tons of tracks, MIDI control, and a nice set of VST effects. The MIDI interface sync'd to my drum machine with no problems. Recording is fast and responsive with zero latency. All in all, the whole package is much more than I expected. You can't go wrong with Tascam, especially at this price.

I would not recommend this device to anyone with 64bit Vista. The drivers seem to be buggy, it crashes other apps that use audio (e.g. you have to unplug it when you use Youtube or Flash keeps crashing the browser). I updated drivers from the manufacturers website too, no improvement. The pops and crackles on audio recording with Cubase rendered it unuseable. In case you're wondering, I have a 2.4GHz QuadCore CPU with 4 GB of RAM, used a separate HDD for the audio files, disabled all extraneous services, etc etc. I could not believe it would not work, properly. Not recommending this device to anyone.

Comments about Tascam US-144MKII USB 2.0 4-channel Audio/MIDI Interface:

This is a full-featured audio interface, but it is poor quality all around. You can find better devices at this price point. Where shall I start? It locks up a lot, requiring frequent resets. It leaks tons of noise from the computer's power supply. Maybe I have a noisy power supply, but none of my other audio interfaces are this bad (I'm up to six now). Mechanically, it is very flimsy. If I was a ham-handed guy, I would have broken it by now. Aside from quality, I want to point out that having the controls on the top makes it inconvenient for use on a computer desk. Most of the other devices out there have the controls facing forward for a good reason.

Saved my Life !

By

Comments about Tascam US-144MKII USB 2.0 4-channel Audio/MIDI Interface:

As was really fighing in order to try to have my Blofeld Synth connected to my Windows based laptop (running Windows Vista Pro) and FL Studio. I just couldn't hear / do anything I wanted using the onboard sound card. Then I read a couple of reviews here about this product so I ran to my Guitar center, bought it, installed it, and in 30 minutes I was in businesss (I took the time to download the latest updates as recommended). No more sound card to deal with! This product is FANTASTIC and works EXACTLY as described... I love it love it love it and I would recommend it to anyone whom is tired to fight with his sound card! Thank you GuitarCenter !!!!

Very satisfied!

Comments about Tascam US-144MKII USB 2.0 4-channel Audio/MIDI Interface:

I have had this interface for more than a year now at it absolutely meets my demands! I've used every single function available without any problems, WHILE USING WINDOWS 7 64-bit & 32-bit. So I don't know what the other reviews are referring to, I have had no problems at all with the drivers. The sound quality is great, there is a tiny bit of very low frequency electrical hum in my recordings, but it might also be because I?m recording close to a power grid. Build quality is fantastic, very durable! The knobs felt a bit plastic at first, but are still very good and sensitive. I would, and already have, recommended this product to others! Good luck!

Thumbs Down

By

Comments about Tascam US-144MKII USB 2.0 4-channel Audio/MIDI Interface:

It's hard to believe that company like Tascam would be so horrible at monitoring compatibility issues. Tascam Interface is NOT COMPATIBLE with Windows 7 or Vista. It's terrible that I spent few weeks trying to trace all the problems before I found out it just doesn't work with Win 7!

Confused about other reviews

By

from Macomb, MI

Comments about Tascam US-144MKII USB 2.0 4-channel Audio/MIDI Interface:

I have a vista 32 bit. My computer i must say sucks, however this interface is better than i imagined. I was having trouble with looking for an interface (as there is so many) I even bought a cheap m-audio the first time and the quality was TERRIBLE. Tascam does a really good job, and when it is used correctly, it can produce really nice quality tracks.

Good For Spoken Performance

By

from Portland, Oregon

Comments about Tascam US-144MKII USB 2.0 4-channel Audio/MIDI Interface:

Tascam refuses to give a dynamic range spec for this unit. I got this unit for recording spoken performace, so dynamic range is less important. Cubase took well over an hour to install, especially dealing with the licensing stuff. Audacity (free recording software you can download) works great with this unit using Windows XP. The TASCAM has very nice build quality and should be a durable unit. It works very well and sounds good. I wish I knew more about the dynamic range.

Compact, easy, affordable, great!

By

from Sao Paulo - Brazil

Comments about Tascam US-144MKII USB 2.0 4-channel Audio/MIDI Interface:

Installation was smooth and the instructions very clear. Pretty intuitive software interface, as well as the knobs and switches on the device. Tried with both dynamic and condenser microphones and worked perfectly. Routed the audio output to the Tascam port, played iTunes and the audio came through seamlessly to the US-144MKII phone output. I already had Cubase installed, opened a recorded multitrack song, configured the VST Multitrack device and bingo - I was ready to record with 2 simultaneous inputs. It fits my laptop case so it brought to life my 'portable recording station' project. I'm currently running Windows XP, will make some tests when decide do migrate to Windows 7. I strongly recommend this product to everyone 'on a budget' looking for a reliable, compact and affordable interface.

Buggy windows 64-bit drivers

By

from Attleboro, MA

Comments about Tascam US-144MKII USB 2.0 4-channel Audio/MIDI Interface:

If you're using a 64-bit OS (Vista or 7), AVOID this interface! The 64-bit drivers have more bugs in them than an ant hill. As mentioned by another reviewer, having the device attached to the system while trying to play any audio (even if you're not playing it through the interface) will cause random crashing in the app you're using. It DOES work fine as an ASIO device through a DAW program, but you have to unplug the thing to do anything else with your system. I tried all versions of the driver up to ver2.00. Nothing worked. Device will probably work OK under XP-32bit and Mac OSX. If you're using anything else, look at another interface.
