Comments about Tascam Special Edition Vintage Gold DR-40 Portable Digital Recorder:
I bought the black one and think Tascam did a great job on the feature set - maybe too good. The mic pre and audio converters in this are just ten year old quality and definitely not up to HD or even current S/N dynamic range spec levels. It's about the same as an old M-audio MicroTrac. Of course at this price (good deal), what should you expect? Good screen user interface. Solid construction and good battery life. Good I/O options for data transfer Good for average recordings and audio capture but not nearly like a Sony or high end Zoom at all. Look closely at the specs first and then decide. If you need better than 102db+ spend more money and get a better unit
