Overview

Special Edition issue of the DR-05 handheld personal digital recorder in a limited run Vintage Gold finish. TASCAM's DR-05 brings high-quality stereo recording to an easy-to-use portable powerhouse with a size and price that anyone can handle. The DR-05 records in MP3 or WAV format, including 24-bit/96kHz high-resolution audio to microSD or microSDHC media. A pair of all-new microphones handles up to 125dB SPL with the sensitivity to capture every detail. With new recording features like Peak Reduction and Quick Menu, the DR-05 puts album-quality recording in the palm of your hand.

Premium-quality Sound
Everything about the DR-05 is designed to get the best quality recordings of your music. A new pair of built-in microphones withstands up to 125dB SPL ”the volume of a jet plane from 200 feet away”yet still have the sensitivity to capture every detail of a performance. You can add your own microphone or line-level source through the 1/8" stereo input, including plug-in power for microphones that need it.

Internally, the DR-05's digital and analog circuit boards are built separately to improve noise performance, with a low-impedance design to further decrease hiss. A separate power supply is sent to the A/D and D/A converter for even better audio performance. The result is clean sound quality ”over 92dB signal-to-noise ratio; under 0.05% total harmonic distortionl and 20Hz to 40kHz response (-1/+3dB) at 24-bit/96kHz resolution.

Simple to Operate
The layout of the DR-05 has been revamped to be quick and easy to work with one thumb. Operations like recording, adjusting levels, deleting bad takes and adding markers are just a button-press away. Dig deeper to find features like limiting, low-cut filtering, a built-in chromatic tuner, and more.

One new feature that makes the DR-05 easy to operate is the new Peak Reduction feature. This setting automatically sets your recording level by listening to the input and adjusting for the best level. Unlike Auto Gain settings, this one only goes down to prevent accidental distortion after a period of low level like a break. Peak Recording works in rehearsal mode or in record, so if the performance is louder than the soundcheck you're still safe. Used with the built-in limiter, it's unlikely you'll distort your career-making live recording.

Other classic TASCAM features are included, like Variable Speed Audition to loop and slow down music without changing the pitch”perfect for transcribing or learning new music. A Level Align function can be switched on for playback to smooth out any sudden volume jumps, and a built-in speaker is also provided. The two AA batteries are enough to power the recorder for 17 1/2 hours, even while recording at CD quality.

Tascam Recorder

By Mary

from Santa Barbara, CA

Comments about Tascam Special Edition Vintage Gold DR-05 Linear PCM Recorder:

I am a technologically challenged musician, but this recorder is very easy to use and program. I would highly recommend this tool to anyone needing to sporadically record vocal ideas and/or lyrics that one doesn't want to forget. Plus, this device does much more than just that....check it out! You'll be pleasantly surprised.

Records fine, speaker is junk

By Bill Fahrner

from Chatham, Ontario Canada

Comments about Tascam Special Edition Vintage Gold DR-05 Linear PCM Recorder:

I purchased this to record memos and to dictate etc. Playing it back you can barely hear the sound out of the speaker. I made sure it was on and not muted at first. Then turning the volume all the way up, and putting it on top of my ear like you would a headphone (directly over my ear) then, and only then can you hear it. Just speaker!

Simple to Use, Sounds Great & Decent Price

By Nicholas Haungs

from Buffalo NY

Comments about Tascam Special Edition Vintage Gold DR-05 Linear PCM Recorder:

Great for rock band rehearsals or whatever else. We used TASCAM DR-1 for our 6 piece (2 guitars, bass, keyboard, drums and vocalist) for years. I just bought the Gold DR-05 at a great price from Guitar Center and it works just as well as it predecessor with a few more bells and whistles - the slow down feature I've discovered. Quick and easy setup. Set it about 10-20 feet in front of the band. Press the record button to arm the recorder, check your levels and adjust the input level. Then press record to start recording. Clear and plenty of storage. There are different .WAV or Mp3 file formats to choose from. Mp3's are very clear. Files are easy to upload to computer by plugging in USB. 2GB will hold hours of MP3 recordings. (Set at 128k with 44.1 sample rate in stereo). We typically would record our rehearsal once a week and play out twice a month and then eventually get to downloading the files. Sometimes we would just leave the files on the recorder and still had plenty of storage space. Also, great to play back and slow down songs to 1/2 rate when trying to listen and learn new parts.

The affordable "Secret Weapon; the Tascam DR-05".

By David Heet

from Carson City, Nevada

Comments about Tascam Special Edition Vintage Gold DR-05 Linear PCM Recorder:

Yes! Another absolute must have item. There are two items one must have to check/improve one's self... {1} A large mirror. {2} A Tascam DR-05. I kid you not I compared the DR-05 to the ever popular "Z**m H6" and you will find that the DR-05 is a chosen marvel. Crystal clear, easy instant record & playback. Very real reproduction of sound. Professional. Now you don't have to be a musician to benefit from a DR-05. An attorney or concert attender as well will capture pristine recordings. You will need to order a $16.00 power supply, separately or just use the "AA" batteries which seem to last a long time. Where you locate the DR-05 in the room will make a difference. You can bypass the two omnidirectional mics with a external condenser mic that centers in the room and capture a unique recording as well. This is a recording studio in the palm of your hand. I prefer this to a Studer 2" tape machine I had in the 1970's. It was the size of a washing machine. Happy recordings!!! David Heet

Pleasantly Surprised

By Michael Scalisi

from Emeryville, CA

Comments about Tascam Special Edition Vintage Gold DR-05 Linear PCM Recorder:

Being an entry-level recorder, my expectations were not terribly high. This isn't feature-laden, but it does what it does well. The sound quality is pretty darn good for this price-point, and it's easy enough to use.

Does the jobۡ_..Tascam DR-05 Vintage Gold

By Kevin M Wong

from Oakland, CA

Comments about Tascam Special Edition Vintage Gold DR-05 Linear PCM Recorder:

Just purchased this unit on a crazy sale at Guitar Center for just $69.99. Didn't really want gold and prefer black but I couldn't pass up the deal. The gold is pretty cheap looking. Just a wanna be gold colored plastic. Not sure if I'd qualify it as "vintage" gold. Unit feels and looks kind of cheap and "plastic-ee" but certainly does the job. From what I can tell you get the best audio by pointing either the left or right side mic towards the music or voice source versus trying to get an even stereo image. Quality is good. I'm overall happy with the Tascam Vintage Gold DR-05. Again, it DOES THE JOB.

Nice little stereo recorder!

By Tom Conroy

from Sunnyvale, CA

Comments about Tascam Special Edition Vintage Gold DR-05 Linear PCM Recorder:

My first decent digital recorder. This does a nice job without being too fussy to set up. The 1/4-20 mount on the bottom is very handy - fits any standard photo tripod or mic stand with a $2 adapter. Glad I picked this up!

As expected

By DK Bennett

from Bluffton, SC

Comments about Tascam Special Edition Vintage Gold DR-05 Linear PCM Recorder:

Not new to Tascam product. This DR-05 does what it needs to do and is easy to operate. The only negative is the cumbersome method to reset the track numbers to zero after having made several recordings. Good service from Guitar Center, would have liked to have received free shipping, but as the device was sale priced I do understand a modest shipping fee. I'll be back.
