I've only used it once so far but the sound and clarity was great.I play guitar for my church choir.I placed the recorder under my amp which sits on a stand.I pointed the head of the recorder towards our bass and keyboard players amps.It picked up everyone crystal clear with no distortion. The balance of the instruments was a little off due to my placement of the recorder, but everthing was super clean. Our drummer sits behind plexi-glass and even he was picked up well. There might be other hand held recorders with more bells and whistles, but for just straight ahead recording I am more than pleased with the Dr-07. The only down side I see is the battery use. They go quick or maybe I was doing something wrong.Buying the power adapter should fix that.

Super Little Recorder!

By Charles S.

from Charlotte, N.C.

I've owned the Tascam four tracks that recorded on cassette in the past which worked well. Sound quality wasn't over the top, but they worked. This DR07 is the trick! The ease of use is great and the sound quality is over the top!! I took the recorder to a live big band concert last night. I just cut it on and laid it on a chair. It was a CD quality recording. The only thing I'll do different next time is use the LMT funtion to keep it from clipping (my fault for not doing it, but this gives you a heads up. GREAT RECORDER!!!

Excellent compact portable recording platform!

By Jerry

from San Diego, CA

I bought this little recorder to capture new song ideas as they come. Perfect for that purpose, very good sound quality of the recordings, and a great device for the money. Controls are simple to navigate and I already recorded a song without having to break open the manual. This recorder is nice and compact, though feels solidy constructed. I keep it in my guitar case with my tuner, some batteries, etc., and there is still room for more stuff.

Effective, small, and powerful.

By Marco Decato

from Reston, VA

I bought this without knowing what type of sound quality I would get. Considering its so small, lightweight, and feels like a small toy I didn't expect much. I practice in a small basement space with drums, guitar, bass and vocals on PA system. We have some carpeting down and the room is full of books and insulation which also absorb sound. We play at almost full volume and because of the Tascam's limiter there is no distortion. The recording quality is right where it needs to be for our jam sessions. I highly recommend this to any band who needs it as a notetaker. Uploading the songs to our PC is quick and I am considering using it with a mic to do some tracking. Best investment of my musical life.

Big Surprise in Little Package

By MLH

from Beaumont CA

I have to agree with the awe struck review. I could not believe how well this little thing reproduced our practice sessions. My group likes it so well that we are going to use it for recording a guide track for studio work. It is easy to use. has limiter feature that sounds transparent, but never clipped. 4 stars instead of 5 only because I like other reviewers feel that the AC adapter should be included. battery life is a couple hours at best, so make sure you get the adapter.

Awesome, From A Different Point Of View!

By Don Neudecker

from Moreno Valley, CA

Okay, let me start by saying that I'm not a musician. I do own a couple of blues harps that I hope to someday be able to just play the blues scale smoothly on though. lol! What I am experienced at though is paranormal investigations. I bought this wonderful little recorder to try to capture EVP's(electronic voice phenomena). It's replacing a standard Olympus digital voice recorder. You can't even comparethe two. The condenser mic is amazing. I have a Blue Snowball usb condenser mic but I have to lug around a laptop to use it. With this recorder I have absolutely nothing tying me down. I can go anywhere with it. We've only used it 3 or 4 times so far on investigations but have already had very positive results. In fact, we've captured possibly our best EVP to date with this Tascam. It's clarity makes it so much easier to recognize different sounds in a busy, noisy environment. The fact that you can listen to what your recording in real-time with headphones is also an advantage in paranormal investigations. I also love the gain control on the side of the unit. It comes in very handy when moving around in an environment that has varying levels of sound. I know most people reading this probably won't be using this recorder for the same purpose that I am but if you are, it's totally worth the money. I would highly recommend it. Oh, one piece of advice though. Maybe the batteries that came with it were old, I don't know, but they died very quickly. I replaced them with a pair of NIMH, rechargeable, Eveready batteries and they last much longer.

Great for the price

By Mario Olivo

from Westminster, CA

This is a great unit if you are looking for something portable and flexible when it comes to recording format and size. I love the way this is stored on an SD card and how you can upgrade to an SD HC 64 GB! You can also choose between recording as WAV or MP3. Big plus on retreiving files on a computer, just plug it in and copy it over. No hassle. Great digital VU meters. Wish volume control was setup differently for easier control but not bad for a portable unit. I personally use this unit as a backup just in case my main unit (a laptop) quits out on me. If you are into recheargable batteries (quick charging now a days, 15 minutes, are better) this is a very self contained, high quality unit. Would definitly recommend it.

It's just a mirco recorder

By Mike

from Manchester CT

I bough this DR on the fact that it might be able to handle what I wanted to record. After having it for a week I find it is nothing more digital micro recorder. For the extra $ 60 I think I will get myself a four track.

Was purchased as a gift. He was very impressed with the sound and quality of this recorder. Used this to make a CD, after recording simply hooked it to the computer and a popup came up to burn to a CD, was very simple. Had recorded and burned to a CD within minutes. Great Product and highly recommend.

Perfect for live events

By Robert Stromsong

from Corpus Christi, Tx

Picked this up on the way to a live event to try and get a CD quality recording of the event. So, thankfully Guitar Center was about a block from our event and I was able to pick this awesome little recorder up just in time to scan the manual, pop in some Duracell batteries, and hit the record button twice and then let the DR-07 do it's thing. And, it definitely did a great job. The recording is now being transferred to CD directly from the SD card. Next time, I will definitely check the recording level and tweak accordingly. Also, should have used the LMT setting to prevent unwanted noise and clipping, but the live recording still came out great! This recorder worked great and I am very happy with this little wonder. Will use to record acoustic ideas too. Good job, TASCAM!

excellent product

By Reid Stripling

from Atlanta, GA

I don't ordinarily write reviews but I felt compelled to write this one because this product has helped me so much. I mainly use this item as a songwriting tool and a practicing tool. I never miss a song idea anymore and I can very quickly and easily listen to myself. The condenser mics in this thing are excellent for the price. I have dropped it on the concrete once and it survived. The product is well made but definitely must be taken care of. I doubt it would survive to many spills. However for the price it is well constructed. You cannot adjust levels with this thing. You just get one track and you have to place it in the right spot. I hang it from a mic stand and sing into it while I play and acoustic. It works great for me. I would definitely buy another one if something happened to this one. Great product

A MUST HAVE DEVICE FOR ANY MUSICIAN

By Chris

from Birmingham, AL

I'm a drummer, but I'm learning how to play bass guitar. So I needed a device that would be good for me to practice with. I was looking at the Boss micro br, but after looking into it, I start realizing that it is geared more toward guitarist with all the effects and stuff. So I started looking at the digital recorders and came across the tascam products. Of course I looked at the DR 1 but I really couldn't afford it. So I looked at the DR 07. I must say that this is the best device for musicians. The recording quality is GREAT!!!! You have the abilty to slow music down to -50 without any distortion(I wouldn't recommend going under -30), and change the pitch up of down by six steps. Now all of this so far is great but the best thing about the device is the loop function. The only down side that someone will have with this device is that it operates on AA batteries. I don't see it has a problem because I'm getting some rechargable batteries for it. I know some will use it for recording, but this is a great all in one device for anything you're doing.

Excellent choice to record practices and song ideas

By resoldered

from Saint Louis Illinois

We run this during practices to have them for future reference and subsequent practicing. I also use it to develop song ideas. The sound quality is good for these purposes. We record with it on the mp3 option at a high sampling rate and the quality is just fine. This thing could not be easier to use. Simple controls and easy transfer to a computer (works just like a jump drive). This beats dragging a laptop out and connecting it to a mixer, mics, etc... A very good deal for 100 bucks.

Small but Mighty!

By Yaaz.

from San Fran, CA

As small, simple and not too expensive as this device might be, it is a great investment! I do a lot of public speaking and podcasting, and can't say anything other than that the quality of voice is unbelievable, it really added quality to what I do. You can learn how to use it in 10 mins and get going!

Great Recorder

By Dylan Knowles

from Pittsburgh, PA

Just got this today , for $99 in store. Didn't even have to use the manual to figure out how to use it, pretty good sound quality, unbeatable for the price. I would definitely recommend it for personal recording purposes, but nothing professional. At this price, you can't go wrong.

Awesome pocket recorder!!!

By Rocker

from Dallas

Needed something to record a whole band, 4 people, rock to metal style as we were auditioning singers and needed something quickly at my drummers house. I must say that I was really impressed with the DR-07! It was very easy to use and navigating menus is very straightforward, didn't even have to open the manual. Popped in the batteries (2 AA's came with it) and hit the record button 2 times to start it. It records to a SD card, it came with a 2GB one, bought a 8GB as well and it worked fine. It can record to MP3 or WAV, opt WAV, good thing I got the 8GB stick. Was anxious to hear it, so plugged it up to the PC via the USB cable it came with, (works with an external card reader too) and WOW, the clarity was amazing! The drums were a little loud, moved it to a more central area and it was even better. I was really amazed how it captured the bass & kick drum, the sound was killer as the bottom end kicked on the recording and didn't clip or sound distorted. Burned a few CD's and passed them out to the band, they were impressed as well. The batteries lasted about 6 hours worth, manual stated up to 12. Tried other batteries like the Lithium with same results, so carried extra just in case, and bought a digital camera case at Wal-Mart for it and stuff it in my guitar gig bag. The 2 mics on top are awesome, it caught EVERY nuance. Came with a foam "windscreen". It does not have a AC power adapter, however, it would add to the price of the unit. I like the battery option vs. rechargeable. I have seen some people on YouTube using other mics with it, but I think the built in mics sound as good or better in some examples. Bottom line, if you don't have the money for studio, or need to record something on the fly, this unit is WELL worth the money! I give this unit 5 stars, despite the missing AC power, solely on the recording quality and ease of use/portability.
