Overview

The TASCAM DR-40 has adjustable mics, 4-track recording and extended battery life, to give you the flexibility you need to record tracks anywhere.

The DR-40 captures up to four tracks from built-in, high-quality condenser microphones, XLR mic or line inputs. The internal mics are adjustable from XY to AB position, helping you to tailor your recording to the sound of the room. A pair of great-sounding TASCAM microphone preamps welcome condenser microphones with phantom power, recording at up to 24-bit/96kHz resolution. It accommodates balanced XLR or 1/4" line inputs using locking Neutrik Combo jacks. The DR-40 accepts SD or SDHC cards up to 32GB, and a 2GB card is included.

Once recorded, playback your takes with EQ and the optional Level Align feature to avoid volume jumps. A stereo reverb effect is also built-in, as well as a speaker and chromatic tuner. Transfer recordings to computer using the USB 2.0 jack. Other features include overdub mode, variable speed playback, limiting and low-cut filter, and much more - all with TASCAM's simple-to-use interface. The unit in the store was only a demo model, but the salesperson ordered from another store, and had it drop shipped to my residence. The unit arrived in a very short time. This unit has tons of features, from the dual external inputs, to providing phantom power on them, to dozens of recording formats, to a very small display screen. Power is provided by batteries, USB cable from a connected computer (which also allows this unit to be accessed by a computer), to using the (optional) AC Power Supply. The unit is designed, as you would expect TEAC's "serious" models for the recording engineer to be, TASCAM. The unit is compact, but with just enough "bulk" and "weight" to make it fit nicely in the palm of your hand. It also has a tripod stand mount, and for the table-top, a small "foot" to raise the mics up off the surface. Once the unit is booted up, you are supplied with a very smartly designed display screen, pretty much, showing you everything on one screen. You navigate through menus, to get to specific settings, using either the Menu, or Quick Menu, buttons, and using up and down arrow buttons. I had to read the manual to figure out what the "Yes" and "No" keys were, not as intuitive. The "Enter" key is used for "Yes", and the "Stop" button is used for "No". I was quickly able to set my "preferred" recording format, and also format an "optionally" purchased 32GB SD card (the unit comes with a 2GB one, but I wanted more recording time). In no time I was recording with the on-board microphones, doing a test, and then, using the external inputs, to do a test from the output of my mixer. The recordings were perfect, and the display screen reflects a pretty true recording level, on both internal mics, and external inputs. This unit has more features than I will ever use, but, I wanted a device that was small, easy to transport, and provided me the recording ability, without having to drag around a PC / Laptop to gigs. The unit is at home being set right next to a large mixing console, as it is in a small recording environment. Having both the options of using the internal mics, and / or, external inputs, gives this unit tons of applications. One last thing, the combination XLR / TRS input plugs was a stroke of genius. One plug, and almost every cable plug (short of a RCA plug) can be used. Keeps the amount of different cables I have to carry around, for all the connections you may have to make, far less. No more XLR / XLR, TRS / TRS, XLR / TRS, TRS / XLR cables, just two now. Also, if you plan on doing extended recordings, without access to USB power, order the (optional) AC Power Supply while you are ordering this, it will save you in the long run.

Was great while it lasted. Bought it in March of 2015 and it just gave me a system error 50 code (January 2016). I called Tascam and they informed me that they only cover labor for 90 days and parts for 1 year. They told me that the circuit board was out and that it would cost $75 for labor to fix. If you buy this I would suggest getting the extended warranty and if you don't like paying the extra for warranty then don't waste your money. I read up on this after it happened and mine wasn't a fluke. Poor quality as fas as construction of the unit goes.

Comments about Tascam DR-40 Portable Digital Recorder:

I love the dual recording on it that way you always have a perfect recording. Also it has a tuner on it very helpful and a play back speaker to hear it. I have a older Tascam DR007 with 2900 recording from it and still working. This one is just nicer with many features, Guitar center fix me up said there weren't any around until February 10 out of stock back order and there I had it 2 days later after I order it, I was a happy man. The gal on phone was very nice and got my order real quick for me. (Thank You) Tascam is very good equipment to have.

Comments about Tascam DR-40 Portable Digital Recorder:

The microphones are very powerful. However, there was an underlying hiss that kept the audio from being broadcast quality, which I needed as a professional journalist. Also, it worked if you set it down on a table top, but I do a lot of hand-held recording and the machine captured every slight noise of my hand. I never got as far as trying to external inputs because I bought it today and I'm taking it back tomorrow. I've seen a lot of comments on the Web about the hiss. Believe me, it is not small.

      H4 Killer...

Comments about Tascam DR-40 Portable Digital Recorder:

This recorder sounds as good or better than the more expensive H4...and the engineering problems of the H4 are adressed with this recorder...like when you have a sound guy who turns up everything after a sound check...the -6db setting that records an additional set of tracks so your video isnt ruined...plus if you drop the H4 on its mics...its toast...this tascam actually has protective bars that take the shock... I shoot concerts mostly and use this recorder instead of an outboard mic...I like how that a usb cable will allow me to use an external cell phone battery to record an 8 hour festival with no problem...

      Great Product- Short Life

      By James Mashburn

Comments about Tascam DR-40 Portable Digital Recorder:

The DR-40 works great for recording our church services. Our 1st one only lasted 23 1/2 months. It would not turn on at all. We bought the extended warranty so we were able to replace it. My only caution is to buy the extended warranty.

Can't go wrong for short, sturdy field recorder

      By Brian Boyko

      from Austin, Texas

Comments about Tascam DR-40 Portable Digital Recorder:

I've been using these small field recorders for fieldwork for years, I needed something that wasn't just a recorder but also produced phantom power. And since I'm a one-man army, I needed something with solid build quality. Really, this is in the same class as the Zoom H4n, and audio-quality it's similar. Where it beats the H4n is in build quality. I've had a lot of Samson products break on me, with loose connections, bad microphones. Since my gear sees a lot of heavy use, that's a no-no. There are other good features for a filmmaker as well, like dual recording. Dear god, this is GLORIOUS for a filmmaker, because you can set your levels where "they oughttabe" and not worry about clipping. I've been on recordings where people were so afraid of clipping, they recorded too low and ended up with a nasty noise floor when they tried to "bring it up in post." There is one negative to this recorder - it has no 1/8" input jack for a small microphone - a number of wireless lav receivers are 1/8th only. Still, it's not hard to go from 1/8th to XLR, and you'll likely get a more secure connection.

      Incredible (Our DSLR's Best Friend)

      By Mark Mutti

Comments about Tascam DR-40 Portable Digital Recorder:

We've used our DR-40 in noisy clubs, on the road, and for interviews. This device is versatile, company, feature-rich, and just incredible. We usually shoot video with our DSLR camera, and run audio from the DR-40 and sync it up afterward. Phantom power, nice little on screen mixer, low cuts, etc. Just so many features in such a tiny package!

      Amazing piece of technology

      By STEVEN CRAWFORD

      from Kansas

Comments about Tascam DR-40 Portable Digital Recorder:

Purchased this unit through our local Guitar Center. They were out of stock but ordered and received this one within a few days. Our main purpose for this is to record rehearsals in order to remember changes to arrangements but we have plans to record some live shows for our own critique. Amazing amount of power packed into a small hold-in-your-hand package. Many modes of recording, true 4-track capability built in. Decided to go ahead and buy the AC adapter in order to save the batteries. Also bought a 16gb SD card to go with it, allows for a lot of recording time even at 24bit\96hz setting. Highly recommend this recorder!

      Wow - Awesome!

      By PAUL BORDELON

      from Clifton, VA

Comments about Tascam DR-40 Portable Digital Recorder:

I bought this unit to record our band's rehearsals. I didnt even read the manual and within 5 minutes I was up and running. I just set the recorder on a music stand in the middle of the practice room, guessed at which level to set it at, and hit record! Just using the built in microphones on the unit we were blown away at how good this thing sounds - truly amazing. I cant wait to try it with a couple of Shure Sm-57s. This unit is also extremely easy to connect to your computer and download files into Itunes. Just connect the USB to your computer, click on "storage" on the the DR-40 screen, then click on the DR-40 Icon that appears on your computer and voila theres all your files waiting to be dragged into Itunes. Battery life seems to be good too - I basically left it running for 3 hours straight recording with no problems. This unit has many more features that I havent had a chance to explore yet - but I can tell you from my preliminary experience this machine is incredible!
