The DP-03 is the latest Portastudio in TASCAM' 37-year progression of making recording simple and affordable for musicians. This version of the DP-03 is an exclusive deal in that it is absent the CD burner that usually comes with the DP-03. It is also absent about $100 of the selling price. Most musicians own a computer that burns CDs, so in some cases, the CD burner is not really needed. At least not needed as much as a hundred bucks.

This 8-track digital recorder captures your music at CD quality to affordable SD/SDHC cards, and a 2GB card is included with the recorder. With built-in microphones, effects, and mastering, the DP-03 provides everything musicians need to record and share his or her music.

A stereo condenser microphone is built into the front panel of the DP-03, helpful for capturing a rehearsal, live performance or songwriting ideas. Also included are a pair of high-quality XLR mi2crophone preamps with phantom power for condenser microphones. 1/4 line inputs are also available, and an instrument-level switch allows you to record a guitar or bass without a direct box. A three-button footswitch, the RC-3F, is available for control and punch in.

Routing the inputs to one of the eight tracks is simple, and you can record two at a time until you fill up all eight. A tuner and metronome are built-in for tight-sounding tracks, each with its own dedicated button for quick access. Track can be edited with commands like copy/paste, silence, clone track and undo. Bouncing is also available, even bouncing all eight tracks down to one or two. There' even the option to import a recording through USB or audio CD.

Each track has its own send to a stereo reverb processor as well as two-band shelving EQ. Once you™ve perfected your mix with the 45mm faders, pan knobs, reverb and EQ, record it to the dedicated stereo master track. Your mix can be processed with mastering effects like EQ and limiting for a tight, modern sound. When you'e satisfied, transfer your mix to a computer over USB 2.0 or burn an audio CD.

Comments about Tascam DP-03SD 8-Channel Portastudio:

My previous recorder was a Tascam 424 MkII, that I bought 15 years ago. I love the Tascam recorders and this one is a great replacement for my old 424. Recording quality is excellent, the documentation is good and controls are adequate. The built-in microphones, reverb and metronome are nice, too. One caveat is that the unit allows only two inputs, so that live recording is necessarily limited.

Good enough for me.

Comments about Tascam DP-03SD 8-Channel Portastudio:

I was Looking for an easy to use digital recorder to record my ideas, practice, etc.. The Tascam DP-03SD pretty much hit the nail on the head. Although it is not not studio quality. It is good enough to record my music for copyrighting or just recording new song ideas. It is easy to use. If you have ever used a digital recorder before this one can be used right out of the box just using the quick start menu. I only have to complaints, 1. It only accepts to inputs at a time, and 2. it does not take a Low-Z cord for vocals. Other than that I am satisfied with the recorder so far.

New Purchase of Portastudio

from Rialto, CA

Comments about Tascam DP-03SD 8-Channel Portastudio:

Having had an original Portastudio from the 80's this is a hole lot more of a usable piece. The old cassettes just simply faded when over dubbing. Oh, for the younger musicians a cassette was a compact recordable tape. I have perused one tune so far with the unit and have been very successful. The Guitar and Bass were direct into the Portastudio and got awesome sound from the start. The built in tuner got the instruments right on harmonically.Vocals were through a vintage Sure SM58 and it picked up all the grunts and breaths during the recording, reminded me of the 1-1/2" wide reel to reel recording days. The drums were recorded through the on board mics. With a little time in positioning the Portastudio behind the drum kit, the two tracks sounded like the kit had been individually mixed and then fed to the two tracks. Currently I am studying the manual through the mix down and have picked up a mini "B" USB cable to move the mix onto my computer. Like the WAV format. I have only had the unit for a month and have had a great time with it. Of course,Tascam/Teac has been a favorite of mine for many years. This device is light, compact and has the sound and play back like the pro studios, Way Impressed! The purchase was a little sticky with GC as there were some issues with the billing on GCs' part but, they did take care of the problem as soon as they could. Overall I have made a great purchase, thanks to the open display and the quick discussion with the Guitar Center People in the recording equipment area.

Perfect for me

By Daryl Conklin

from Youngstown, OH

Comments about Tascam DP-03SD 8-Channel Portastudio:

This unit does exactly what the Tascam says it will. It records up to eight separate tracks in high quality to an SD chip. Better yet, it allows me to use my old JamVox to produce whatever amp sound I want to use. I run my guitar into the JamVox and output that into the Tascam. Same goes for drum loops. Works great. I think the quality it great too. Anyone with any electronics knowledge knows that the maker, TEAC, has been making high quality electronic equipment for decades. The manual is very helpful, and the features are very professional (including compression, punching in and out, equalizing each channel, assigning each channel, etc, etc).

Comments about Tascam DP-03SD 8-Channel Portastudio:

I am very happy with my Tascam DP-03 SD. It provides exactly what I need: high quality, multi-track recording capability for my electric guitar. I feed in effects and record directly into the unit. It works great. I bought the three year warranty to avoid any issues. What a deal!

Tascam Fail. GC return policy?

By paul hooper

from Rockville MD

Comments about Tascam DP-03SD 8-Channel Portastudio:

Had this unit for 15 days. Took some learning but seemed to work well enough until it didn't work anymore. Channel 2 is out, I can see the meters moving but cant hear a thing. Tried for a couple of days thinking it was user error but no luck so today I will return it, lets see what GC's policy is like.
