Overview

The TASCAM DP-02 Digital Portastudio makes recording simple by matching 8-track CD-quality recording with a Portastudio interface. Now you can ditch the menus and concentrate on the music. A pair of record-quality TASCAM mic preamps offers XLR inputs with phantom power for condenser mics and a guitar input for direct recording. Each channel gives you dedicated controls for instant access to fader level, record arm/track mute, pan, effect send, high and low EQ. There's also an EQ frequency button for finer control over the mix.

2 effects processors are included in the DP-02. A multi-effects processor on the input provides great-sounding overdrive, flange, delay, and more for your guitar, vocal, drum, and bass tracks. In addition, there's a reverb processor on a send and return for adding hall, room, plate, or chamber reverb to your mix. The DP-02 is loaded with great TASCAM extras like a chromatic tuner, metronome, and bar-and-beat display for getting around your song.

The DP-02 records 2 channels at a time to a built-in 40GB hard drive. When you're satisfied with your production, arm the dedicated master track for your stereo mixdown. You can transfer your tracks and mixes or backup your song to a computer through a speedy USB 2.0 connection or burn it to a CD with the slot-loading drive. No other workstation makes recording so simple, affordable and fun as the TASCAM DP-02.

I love this device, it's versatile. You can use it alone with the on-board CD burner and effects and never need a computer, or you can connect it to your computer to transfer recorded files for further production. You choose. You can even transfer files from your computer to record along to. Great! Before I say anything else, remember this: when going to record a track, it is a three step process. 1) Select mono or stereo & arm your track(s) 2) Hit the record button on the armed tracks 3) then hit record/play to begin recording. It seems simple, but for someone who was new to digital recorders, I kept forgetting to arm the tracks and would have to redo takes. Once I wasn't frustrated anymore, I realized there was a good reason for this three step process... so you don't lose or record over exsisting tracks, and you have the right settings for each take. Tascam is a brand I will continue to buy for a long time to come. I used thier Porta 02 4-track cassette recorder for years in the 90's through early '00's, and it continues to be my backup for recording demos. Years ago I switched to using my computer for home recording, buying sound devices and programs. That is a legitimate way to go, and with this device you can still utilize your computer once the tracks are recorded. You can even transfer things to the device FROM your computer. However, nothing is as great as the feel of turning on your multi-track recorder and feeling those record buttons under your fingers during a session. Since you don't use a computer screen with this, you stop using your eyes during recording, and all the set up and glitch hassles that come with using a computer for home recording aren't there. Long story short, if you want that quality you get from digitally recording on your computer, but you long for the ease and feel of deticated recording devices with sliders and record buttons, get this! This DP-02 is pretty rugged, has so many features, and is a snap to get going with. Just plug in, set your levels and record. That's it! You'll be making high quality recordings right out of the box. My only gripe, if I were to have one, is that the 40 gigabyte hard drive isn't really one deticated partition. It's two, which means you're not actually getting 40 gigs of storage to play with as advertised. There is still more than enough to record song after song utilizing the full 8 tracks on each, so don't worry too much about that. Here is my gripe though... One partition (AKA: section of the hard drive) is for recording only. When you are done recording, you have to transfer the whole song to the other partition of the hard drive before transferring the files to your computer for further editing. This is time consuming, and I do believe the only mis-step in making this device from Tascam. They should have had the device record in a lossless format like WAV, and then made the device FAT32 format so your computer could utilize the whole 40gigs as if it were a regular external hard drive. This would have given us the full 40 gigs for recording, and it would have made it easier to transfer files. Regarless, if you are patient and can overlook this one flaw, you will be happy, even proud to own this. The quality is worth it. One last thing, with the phantom power and the XLR inputs, you have the ability to utilize the potential of some really good equipment. Make sure you're using good microphones, cables, etc. It will make all the difference.

To begin with - Guitar Center personnel have been on my side since day 1. They are awesome. I bought my DP-02 in Oct '09. I had problems about 45 days into it. It quit burning CD's. Tascam said send it back and they'll replace the hard drive. I had over 80 hours of recording time on it - no way but to lose it. I dropped the data onto my computer after I purchased an audio peripheral. Out another $150 because the unit wouldn't send the data to my computer via the USB. Sent it it - cost me $150 to repair (read your warranty for labor) and I'm still having problems with it. TASCAM is a great company - I think they've just got a lemon design on their hands. Waiting on a resolution to the problem. When it works - a small studio can sound like a Nashville Giant!

Nice But...

By

Comments about TASCAM DP-02 Digital Portastudio:

Bought this just over three weeks ago. Read the manual and refer back to it BEFORE I take the next step. I recorded 4 tracks and set up the master. No problem. Inserted CD to transfer Master and the problem started. It gulped the CD and up popped an error message. Powered down as message directed and then tried to re-boot. No dice. Unit is still trying to do something with the CD but all I heard was a bunch of clicking as it tried to do what it wanted. It was helplessly stuck in the middle of trying to do whatever it was supposed to be doing. Took it back to GC yesterday and they're getting me a new one from another store. I never used any type of recorder before but actually found this unit relatively easy to use. I am not worried about the problem that happened since GC is making good on it. I am excited about gettting the replacement and getting back to "playing" with my new toy. I would recommend this to anyone who is interested but they might also want to look at the DP03 which seems to be the upgrade or newer version. Price is the same at GC on line.

Comments about TASCAM DP-02 Digital Portastudio:

I love this thing...it's great for recording my dj mixes and beats from my MPC 2000XL, and the effects are great for vocals. I used it a couple times to run mics during gigs as well. I've even got my cousin on it recording his electric guitar and it sounds great. For the price you can't beat it. Definitely something to think about for a home studio if you're a dj or just want to stray away from DAWs and computers to get a feel for what you're recording.

Comments about TASCAM DP-02 Digital Portastudio:

READ THE BOOK!In less than an hour I was burning a professional sounding cd! If you have any experience with the old school cassette portastudios , you can pretty much skip to advanced techniques. Great effects, but arming the tracks can be tricky.I found doing it in reverse works well. Great unit at a great price. READ THE BOOK!

Amazing!! If you are a recording artist at home, like me, you will love the DP-02. I never write reviews but this is a great piece of equipment if you are into recordig. Well worth the money. I was intimidated at first, but after a few hours I recorded a full 8 track song. And now that I understand the machine, I'm really having fun. Hot Little Portable Studio

By

from Cleveland, OH

Comments about TASCAM DP-02 Digital Portastudio:

I just picked up this awesome little digital recorder from the Guitar Center today and only after an hour of setting up and reading the manual I burned my first CD! For those who are not looking for more than two mic inputs at once, this is the item for you. I own all the instruments from guitars, bass, electronic drums, and a decent mic that I use at home to perform and record on the tascam DP-02 with excellent results. The feature I see that the is the most helpful are the EQ dials dedicated to each track input that can be adjusted and seen without a pop-up menu! The manual reads straight forward and burning to an audio CD was very easy and fast too!Hopefully this review helps those looking for something like the tascam DP-02 with a built-in 40 Gigabyte hard drive and CD-R/RW burner. The only real difference I see with the Boss recorders or other similar recorders is the lack of an onboard drum pad setup, which I didn't need anyway. Keep on living out your dreams and get over to Guitar Center today.

Better Than I Imagined

By

from Pensacola FL

Comments about TASCAM DP-02 Digital Portastudio:

I bought this wondering if I'd like it... and I do. I've read many reviews on the DP-02. Most were favorable, and I know why: It's incredibly simple to use and sounds great. I wish it had compression capabilities, but for this price, I can buy the one I need! I recorded a few tracks almost immediately (and I've never recorded anything before!). For what I do, I cannot see the need for a big audiophile DAW system. The DP-02 does everything I need and more. After 31 years of playing various instruments, I can honestly say that this is an instrument in and of itself. I love it, and I think you will too!
