I've had my Tascam DP 8 for about 3 years and I love it. With 8 tracks, you can work out your songs with harmonies, stereo drums, 2 guitars, bass and lead vocal- all the basics that 4 tracks won't get you. This is fairly easy though I have to keep the manual handy because I don't use this real often. The reverb is decent and adjustable. My mic is a fairly inexpensive MXL 990 condenser and my mixer was a Mackie 1402. What I really love about this Tascam is that it's is simple enough so that someone like myself can focus on the music and not have to muster up a lot of patience learning software or endless menus. I tried the Boss recorder with the built in drums and had to give up. For simple drums (at only about 130 bucks) just get an Alesis SR 16 (unless you can play drums) The built in mice make it easy to use to just capture your ideas before you forget them. This is a convenient tool for arranging your music and it's good enough to even make simple demos if you have some other recording equipment. You can hear my recordings at mplourde dot com.

One of the earlier reviewer's said this was so easy a child could use it. Not so at all for a middle aged novice in digital music production. I bought this because it was a digital version of a 4 track cassette recorder, which I am familiar with, so I thought it would be easy to use. The buttons are all laid out like a mixer, so the visual part is easy to read.
.
With some slogging through the manual, I was able to make a decent three track recording using a keyboard drum machine, and two guitars. However, the digital set up on this thing was done by an engineer whose first language is not English, not an American musician, so the arrangement of things and the names of the labels are all strange. There is a lot of deep diving in the menus to get anything done. It is not at all intuitive. There were steps left out or not explained clearly in the manual. With practice you can get used to the interface. It works well though and the sound quality is very good.

I got this recorder because I found GarageBand to be overwhelming without any instruction. But the setup on this has made me go back to GarageBand, which I have now found a video series on. I think the time is better spent on GarageBand. I've ordered some iRig gear. I will probably sell the Tascam.

Comments about Tascam DP-008EX Digital 8-Track Pocketstudio:

Great for Demos at Home, Rehearsal Space, or in the field. My All-Time favorite devices were the KORG PXR4 Pandora's Box Digital 4 Track Recorder, which I loved for it's ease of use and complete portability, and my TASCAM Digital 8-Track that I had about 10 years ago. This is a combination of those two- the best of both worlds! Decent built-in Mic capabilities work as a convenient sketchpad if need be. 2 XLR inputs and 1/4" input make it great for demos or more involved home / field recordings, or songwriting/arranging experimentation. Get yourself a decent mic and Mic Preamp and you are good to go!

Really easy to use - up and running very quickly after following the Quick Start guide. Great for quickly capturing ideas and working out arrangements. It probably has limited production capability but I am not advanced enough to notice. My only complaint is that the unit burns through batteries very quickly and doesn't come with an AC power cord.

Comments about Tascam DP-008EX Digital 8-Track Pocketstudio:

I use the Tascam for recording gigs (I play with either a trio or another singer-guitarist) and some studio-type recordings. I record using (usually) exterior microphones, although the interior mics work just fine. I am pleased with the results and can stow the unit easily in my gig bag as well. The unit chews through batteries rather quickly and four hours will zap them. The reverb, pan pots, etc. all work well and it's fun to use the unit. On the negative side, I've found that some cards will cause the unit to struggle when mixing or mastering recordings. Tascam assumed (wrongly) that I'm using the wrong cards, but a faster card will function much better. It does take some time to convert files from WAV to MP3. It mixes down (real time), masters (real time) and is set up for exporting files (real time). This means that a 3-minute song will take ten to twelve minutes to fully prepare. On the easy side, I just switch the card from the Tascam to the computer and drag the file on the desktop and use my iTunes program to convert them to MP3 for emailing or installing on thumb drives. The DP-008ex travels with me, and has held up well. Another nice feature is that it provides power to condenser mics as well, taking both high and low impedance microphones. The unit does have some EQ and reasonably good (considering) compression which I use all the time on mastering. I would have rated the unit four and a half stars if I could have. The only hitch is the issue with some (slower) cards, and the fact that the manual never explains what "partitioning" really means to the user, otherwise it would have been a full 5 stars.

A child could use this thing - it's perfect for me. Given the price and ease of use, I can't quite expect to have more tracks at my disposal, more bells and whistles, but you know what? Compared to the headache of getting digital audio workstations going from scratch, this thing's a snap and for my needs, totally okay with it.

Comments about Tascam DP-008EX Digital 8-Track Pocketstudio:

I have only had it for a week, but so far it has been exactly what I was looking for. I have recorded using Audacity on my computer, but found it complicated and unsatisfactory, so I stopped using it. The DP-008 is easy to set up and start recording. There is a quick-start section in the manual which had me up and running in minutes. There are a lot of settings with which I haven't experimented yet, but I have recorded a few rhythm tracks so I can practice lead over. I can keep the leads I like and re-do the ones that didn't quite work. The playback quality is just fine to my ears. You will need headphones. The unit feels like a quality piece of electronics, the knobs don't feel cheap and the menus are logical. And it is easily portable, although a quality padded carrying case would be a nice addition. I bought the A/C adapter, but I haven't used it yet.
