Overview

TASCAM's DP-004 Digital Pocketstudio is based on 30 years of easy-to-use cassette Portastudios, updated with four tracks of CD-quality digital recording. Like those groundbreaking Portastudios, a row of knobs set levels and pan instead of a list of menus.

The DP-004 can record two sources at once to the included 1GB SD Card. A built-in stereo condenser microphone makes it simple to record anywhere you go, perfect for concerts, rehearsals and songwriting inspirations. A pair of 1/4" jacks on the rear panel allow you to connect your own microphones or sources. You can even switch the inputs to guitar level for recording.

The DP-004 allows you to build up your arrangement until you've filled up all four tracks. The Bounce feature allows you to consolidate tracks and make room for more overdub layers. Track editing and undo is also available.

Mixing is also built into the Digital Pocketstudio. Once you set levels and pan, record your mix onto a dedicated stereo master track. You're able to transfer your tracks and mixes to a computer over USB 2 for CD burning and sharing online.

Despite its go-anywhere compact design - smaller than a paperback book - the DP-004 is simple enough for students, songwriters and musicians who want to keep their recording process simple and creative.

If I could give it six stars I would. Whether you are recoring prazctice session, live performance, or just wanting to get better, this is for you. You won't cut a professional CD with one of these things, but you sure can cut demo's, or songs to play on ipods. It is not hard to use at all. I am in my 40's and have been out of the industry for 20 years. I learned how to use every feature of this device in about three hours...and spit out a WAV file to use on my ipod. It was pretty easy. I wish it had EQ for each track, but then it'd be bigger and probably more expensive. It can fit into my guitar case with no problem. I would reccomend getting a larger SD card for it, because you will find yourself using this toy a bunch. It runs on AA batteries, and does a great job, on average I get about eight hours out of a set. I am planning on getting the power supply for it, when I use it at home. If you are an aspireing musician, this is a must. I wish I'd had something like this 20 years ago. If it got lost, broke or stolen tomorrow, I would purchase another one as fast as I' could.

Like any other product, there is good and bad. The good is that this device----like all digital recorders, does a wonderful job of recording in rooms that don't have all of the sound-deadening foam and acoustic values. This means you can record in a concrete floored basement---unlike back in the day when such would make for aweful sound. What is good about this unit is essentially what's good about digital recording as a whole. The bad---I would caution buyers ---some of the annoyances are more than just peaves---they can be very frustrating. No AC adaptor---which costs extra. This is like buying a car with no tires. Next; The screen isn't lit---and you might think saving some cash and sacrificing such is ok---it will drive you crazy if you want to record in a soft lighting (hello, that's what we musicians do.) The single most annoying thing is that everytime you execute a major function---like erasing a piece--you have to reassign the recording inputs,i.e. mic, guitar/line, internal mic, off---etc. Everytime. Such a neat lil machine with such an annoying shortcoming. And last---and this can be very limiting when studying your tracks at playback(levels, overall sound), the headphone jack puts out a very weak power signal---so, no jammimg whatsoever til you play it through a amp or mixer. And if you are playing acoustic drums (or even an acoustic guitar) and want to use the click---forget about being able to hear the click through ANY type of phones, regardless of how sharp your headphones are---unless you use an amp. By the time you get all your amps, cords and signals lined out---you start jonesing for the other machines---machines you can see in dim lighting, don't have to change settings when attempting a single task, and can give a nice boost to the phones. I hate negative reviews, but I shoulda spent an extra hundy or so.

A beautiful little machine

By Jonathan Hogan

from NYC, NY

Comments about TASCAM DP-004 Portable 4-track Digital Multi-track Recorder:

Astonishing quality and versatility in such a small and elegant package. Easy to use; so far I've only used the built in mikes - sat down with the recorder on the table in front of me, played guitar and sang. Played back on my portable speakers and heard better sound than on my TEAC reel to reel with great microphones. The line out/headphone jack, two mic. inputs, 4 tracks, bounce and punch in capabilities, ease of use and brilliant sound - and you can download on to your computer - I guess you could say I am pleased.

Big Surprise, Small Package

By Ed Marynski

from Davisburg, Michigan

Comments about TASCAM DP-004 Portable 4-track Digital Multi-track Recorder:

I was mainly looking for a scratch pad to capture ideas without having to fire up my laptop, soundcard, recording program, etc.. I looked over all the portable recorders and tried a few out, and the Tascam IMO is by far the best. Some of the single track/stereo field recorders were nice, but I needed something multitrack. Anyways, the mics on this blew me away. Very easy interface and easy transfer of files to computer. I'm buying the new DP-008, after the Holidays, if this were stolen or broke, I would immediately buy another one, this was my favorite purchase of 2009, I use it every single day.

Nice solid unit

By Mark

from Stanley, NY

Comments about TASCAM DP-004 Portable 4-track Digital Multi-track Recorder:

I have owned several portastudios and this one follows in the same tradition of quality and ease of use. The sound quality is outstanding, it is small and portable and lasts a long time just on batteries. My only complaint is the display, it is dark and you have to be at the right angle to see it clearly.. maybe it is just my older eyes. Would I buy it again if it got stolen? Yes.... amazing technology for the price.

Awesome piece of equipment

By jeff

Comments about TASCAM DP-004 Portable 4-track Digital Multi-track Recorder:

This is an impressive piece of equipment. For it's size and price, you can't go wrong with this jem. It is very easy to use with great features and , it sounds great. One of the best things about this unit is how much you can do, internally. I used the built in mics for something (which you can set the sensitivity for)and when I hit record, the noise of actually pushing the button was captured. I went back and was able to silence that noise with an easy to use editing function. You can master, bounce, backup, edit, and other things, all without any external equipment and for every action that you perform, there is a history kept and you can undo by simply deleting the action from the history. Once done with a recording, you connect to your computer and put it on there as a wave file and then use your computer to convert it to whatever type of sound file you want. All in all, this is a great tool for the recording musician in a compact, easy to use, well priced package.

Best musical investment yet

By Joe K.

from Southgate, MI

Comments about TASCAM DP-004 Portable 4-track Digital Multi-track Recorder:

Yeah, I've only been playing guitar for like 3 years. I have been wanting to record my own stuff, but had trouble getting people together to do it. This device here is a Godsend! You can record everything yourself, and it is very easy to use. The portability makes it easy to drag it along when you want to jam or create music with someone else. It was very important for me to be able to upload and download songs/tracks to my computer to edit them, and this thing does it with ease. This is something you can really have fun with, and it's very well worth the price tag, I would have paid more for something like this.

REALLY COOL...EASY TO USE

By Dan

from Sugar Grove, IL

Comments about TASCAM DP-004 Portable 4-track Digital Multi-track Recorder:

This little thing is awesome! I had the old analog version before, and while that one did have more options for controlling sound, this thing still blows it away. The internal mics work great, and have 3 level settings to drown out any unwanted room noise...and the highest level setting is so strong I could hear my wife in the other room! It's easy to use if you read through the quick start guide in the book, and is a perfect way to record personal demos or things like that.

Great multitrack recorder

By Tony

from Palymra, PA

Comments about TASCAM DP-004 Portable 4-track Digital Multi-track Recorder:

I bought the Tascam DP-004, because I wanted a small but versatile multitrack recorder. I don't play professionally but I did for years. I do want to record CDs for friends and family. (ie. Christmas CD) The DP-004 makes that very easy to do. I say easy but there is a learning curve with frequent visits to the manual. There could be more controls/functions but I'm sure the price would then escalate as well. I can record a bass/drum track (all keyboards by the way) then add a rhythm and lead later. I would recommend the power pack and a larger memory stick. Batteries always die at the wrong time and until you buy rechargeables you have the cost of the PS. The 1 GB memory stick filled too fast and I had to delete tracks to make room for new ones. I didn't like doing that in case I wanted to re-mix a track later. bottom line I would buy another. I know you can bounce tracks but 4 tracks are enough for me.

A Dream Come True - Almost

By Dimitri Lozovoy

from Lexington, KY

Comments about TASCAM DP-004 Portable 4-track Digital Multi-track Recorder:

This takes my recording duty with me wherever I go (a bar, a coffee shop, a campfire in the forest, a local park, etc). I previously only used PC to record music. Even though this thing is a wonder (in terms of portability), it cannot do several crucial things that PC sequencers that I've been used to can do. When overdubbing, I am used to be able to automatically mix the audio that's already there with the audio that I am recording (for smoother transitions between verses/choruses/sections). I have become quite accustomed to recording songs a verse or a chorus part at a time. With this unit, when you go on to working on the next section of the song, you must catch the beat exactly with your record button press as to avoid cutting off the previously recorded part that precedes the part you are recording. Early in the recording process this results in weird-sounding tiny interruptions between each part of the song that is recorded separately. But as you add more and more tracks, the interruptions become less noticeable, especially if the sections overlap each other at different time locations on different tracks. This pushes you to record longer sections at a time, in order to avoid dealing with the awkward momentary silence moments in between sections, and, in turn, probably makes you a better player. You also can't EQ or compress things like you can on a PC. But that also has its upside. For example, when using the built in condenser mics, I learned to equalize the sound by moving the sound source farther and closer away from the mic. They have also pushed me to be more aware of the room that I am recording in. To sum it up, this thing really teaches you how to record raw and how to sound good without all the advanced studio tricks. It teaches you to use your ears and shows you what you really sound like. This was a very productive investment.

Best for the money

By Tojam Morgan

from Houston ,Tx

Comments about TASCAM DP-004 Portable 4-track Digital Multi-track Recorder:

I had a Tascam DP-01 that I really liked but it was so big and had alot of things I did not need. Then I bought the Tascam 00-4 and it is no bigger than a book and has all the things I need to record my work on. The undo is a great thing. Set all your knobs and record if you are unhappy with it push the undo and it saves all your settings and you start recording all over again in seconds. This is not the best recorder you can buy but for the money it does the job. Of course you will need other gear to really make it work like a mixer, head phones, guitar effects pedals, but if you are a real musican you have those anyway. For the money and what the tascam 00-4 does I say yes buy it you won't be sorry.

Good Recorder

Comments about TASCAM DP-004 Portable 4-track Digital Multi-track Recorder:

I bought this about a month ago. I did find it fairly easy to use. I would recomend that you go to the Tascam website and purchase the DVD tutorial though. Its alot easier that reading the manual. It makes good recordings but you will need to have an editing program in your computer for final touches, clean up etc as the the recordings seem to come out a little muddy but overall for the money you cant beat it.

Awesome

By Jake

from Minneapolis, MN

Comments about TASCAM DP-004 Portable 4-track Digital Multi-track Recorder:

If you want a way to get ideas down this works great. My only complaints are that it's hard to get a loud master onto your computer, there is no LED light, and that my power supply jack broke so I have to use batteries - but that was about a year after I bought it new. Great for rough mixes and getting ideas down, just don't expect anything too professional. If I lost it I would replace it, I wouldn't know what to do without it, definitely worth the money and 5 starts.

Tascam pocketstudio

Comments about TASCAM DP-004 Portable 4-track Digital Multi-track Recorder:

This is a great recorder. I was going to buy an 8 track but instead i got the tascam pocketstudio. I will never regret the choice. This recorder is great for anything. It has 2 built in mics, 2 inputs, this recorder has great sound quality. Also comes with a 1 GB sim card to store your songs on and you can store a lot of songs on there. It is also very very easy to use and you can hook it up to the computer and mix it down on there. I use a free program named audacity. There is only one problem, it does not come with a cord to plug into the wall and it takes 6 batteries. But trust me that is not a deal breaker. It also has effects for your guitar in it and it has a built in tuner. This is a great item i totally recommend this to anyone.

Tascam 4-track

By Heavy E

from Sand Diego, CA

Comments about TASCAM DP-004 Portable 4-track Digital Multi-track Recorder:

For the price this is an extremely good product to start off on if your're a new atist. When i first got my tascam 4-track about a year ago it didnt take me long to figure out this machine. It gets the job done when you need to lay down a track or two on your tour bus or while you are just sitting at home. Its only flaw is the sound quality when you hook up your microphone and you start singing or rapping there is some static in the backround but its pretty easy to fix if you learn how to use this fine piece of equipment properly. As a matter a fact i still use it to this day and ive came out with two demos with it. There are endless possibilities with this machine and i highly recomend that you buy it asap!

Comments about TASCAM DP-004 Portable 4-track Digital Multi-track Recorder:

bought for basic home hobby recording. started sequence according to directions. demo song loaded but no volume in headphones. Yes, I checked master volume, track volume and volume at headphone jack as well as testing headphones in different source to verify operation. Turned machine off and restarted. machine will now only go to screen to load song but exec will not operate. Have contacted Tascam but so far no reply. unit has warranty registratin sent in. At this point I would obviously prefer to have unit replaced. I miss my old 4 track tape unit- so much easier to operate.

Nice portable recorder that tracks

By Nancy Wilson

from Jax Florida

Comments about TASCAM DP-004 Portable 4-track Digital Multi-track Recorder:

A little intimidating at first- but actually easier to use than the old tape ones. The imstructions are lengthy, but once you get the basics down, the unit is easy to use, and probably will boost my muscianship skills a bit- getting good tracks is a challenge! The unit is small and would work as a portable field recorder, but perhaps getting a "song" file loaded takes a few more seconds than something built for the purpose- but this unit multi-tracks! The tradeoff is worth it here. Surprised at the clarity of the built in microphones- they are small, but they really deliver. I haven't tried the 1/4" jacks yet. Guitar Center price IS the lowest, I looked around on the net. Very happy with the purchase. Bought an AC adapter for about $7, so I don't have to worry about batteries so much.
