I thought I'd put a good word in because this is the machine of my dreams. I've had it for three weeks now and the love affair only intensifies with use. I'm not the most technically minded user around--I like my tools easy but powerful and I will declare that the 2488neo's controls are extremely intuitive and very flexible. All the wonderful features this machine provides are incredibly easy to access and the large screen is bright, easy to read, and completely adequate. The learning curve for using this unit was almost non-existent--I was able to jump right in and get great results almost instantly. There's tons of hard drive space, a built in CD burner and USB inport and export. This machine is everything I've ever needed or wanted. I love it.

Being a long time user of Tascam digital SIAB, i am quite familiar with their products. I have and still use the Tascam 788 SIAB for the last 8 years. The quality that one is superb in term of sound quality and reliability for the money. With that said, i decided to upgrade my equipment by buying the 2488 NEO. The over all appearance is nice. The layout is clear and neat, and it takes little time to get used to the features and functions, which is great. However, the reason it only got 2 stars from me was that the darn thing crashed as soon as i got it out of the box after i took it home. It seems like the unit gets pretty hot due to inadequate cooling for the internal components. Also, the HD does not initiates correctly upon boot up. I got it to work after several power on and off, since it was stuck and I couldn't do anything with it excepts to hit the power button. When it works, the sound quality is very good for the class and money that it is in. I have only looked into some basic features and will have to take it back tomorrow morning, so I can't comment on everything yet. I think this is a good piece of machinery, but Tascam has gotta look more into fixing this problem for the future batch of 2488 NEO.

Great "Bang for your Buck"

By John

from Lugoff, SC

This HD Recorder is awesome. For the people that haven't given it a good review, I understand that there are some system issues that could be a bit better, but still, overall, I've not (personnaly) seen a better recorder with the sound quality and ease of use as this one. Some people say it's difficult and the manual isnt to user friendly, well I used the manual, and had no problems figuring out the basic funtionality of this machine. Just knowing the basics will put you on the path to recording awesome sounding music, and once you master it (on the recorder) it starts to take shape of a professionally done track. This thing has it all. I will say that I did run into that "System Error" message 1 time, but I think I know why, and it was something to do with importing WAV files onto the recorder. Other than that 1 error, I've had no problems with it, and have become an avid user of this product. I cant wait to learn more about it to get better sounding music. AWESOME!!!

Tascam Long Term

By Engelmann Gary

from Oregon

My review of this product has to do with the review that talked of overheating and crashing problems, take it back. I have had my unit for over a year now and it has only been first rate, even when having the power cord pulled during operation it comes right back up and boots every time, and I have yet to see any problem with overheating. The unit is great for what it is, very flexible and self contained. It has operated flawlessly since I brought it home!

editing

By allen simons

from loveland colorado

I find this recorder very easy to use in most aspects. Sounds great, operates well. My difficulty is during the editing phase. When adding the "in" and "out" points to get the start and finish of the song, I cant seem to figure out how to get it to apply to the master track, no matter how much I read the instruction guide. Other than that, excellent.

great piece

By charles

from boston,ma.

anyone complaining about the manual being un--user friendly..you should probably start out with something more simple like a 4 track. this machine is awesome..it takes a little getting used to but once you do the possibility's are endless.the 24 bit sounds like im on the radio dude..even my wife who hates my jams..thinks this is awesome. people who complain of crashing...im not sure, hasn't happen to me. all i know is if you save your material frequently and shut it down properly you shouldn't have a problem. if you've owned a tascam in the past, there all pretty similar in way of commands..ive owned a lot of tascam products so i was able to jump in and go rite away..i was up grading from a dp-01fx..the interface is very much the same. good luck...well worth the buck

I own one

By Robert

from L.R. AR

I've had my neo now for just over a month and have laid down some songs. It does a good job. The manual is a little hard to understand, especially if you are a newcomer to home recording and the lingo. I ended up buying a video so I could better understand the machine. I bought a great condensor mic to use with it and I'm a little disappointed in the mic tones. I am told I may need to buy a mic pre amp to get better tones for my vocals.

Nice Machine

By Raised On Records

from Indianapolis, Ind

I bought this workstation about 7 months ago and couldn't be more pleased. Great sound production, and with the addition of better mics, vocals are wonderful. It's a little intimidating at first, but once you work with it awhile..SHAZZAM! The only concern I have is that occasionally , I "smell heat" from the unit. Although it hasn't crashed or melted since I have had it, but, since I am not alone in this experience, I think Tascam should address this issue.

I'm surprised

By Jack T

from Slidell La.

received it yesterday and I'm recording already. I'm 63 and don't care for learning curves at all- but I took someones advise and read the manuel BEFORE I cranked it up and it worked GREAT!!. The only thing I don't like are the effects and the slow setup for them. Maybe saving them will speed it up.

Top of the Line

By Ryan G

from Waltham, MA

This recorder is almost quite literally a studio at your fingertips. First of all the sound quality is great. It often times sounds better than some professional recordings out there. There is a ridiculous array of effects you can add to anything you want, and they are very high quality as well. The effect that most impressed me was the reverberation. If this is your first recorder you will most likely become lost within the Neo's setup. With that being said, DO NOT and I repeat, DO NOT GET THIS AS YOUR FIRST HOME RECORDER. My band and I started out using a Tascam DP-02CF, and it readied us for using this. There are very few issues I have with this recorder. It would be nice if there were physical panning knobs for each track, but I know that having the panning done within the interface allows the pan settings to be saved. As always, with any portable recorder, I wish there were more mic inputs, but four is a lot for a portable recorder. Anyway, for the experienced recording artist without a record deal, this is close to perfect.

So Far So Good

By Tommy

from Wynantskill, NY

I've had the unit now for just over a week and have found it is everything I hoped it to be. Within the first hour I had already figure out how to record tracks, add effects and use the metronone. I have a lot to learn about the unit but I will have to be a patient. I ordered the DVD tutorial that everyone brags about, so I hope that helps me when it arrives. It is very compact yet big enough to give you a feel of a real professional studio. I was recording my music with Sonar on my computer but got tired of all the latency and drop out problems. I wanted something that would let me record without all the software problems. So far so good!!!

Excellent Sound Quality

By Jim Wolfe

from Dayton, OH

I received my 2488 last Tuesday. After having used a Fostex MR16 for three years, it took me six days to learn the in s and outs of this machine. I am extremely satisfied with the performance of the unit. I especially like the mastering section of the machine. The sound quality of a produced CD is excellent.

A little confusing for a day or two

By buzz taylor

from worcester, mass

I've had this a week now and I love it! Great quality recordings, tons of extra things that do work! I burned a couple cd's just to test it and it worked fast. The chances of me needing 24 tracks is slim but their there if needed. What was a little tricky is the mixer really is like a separate mixer, you can assign any input to any track, unlike some brands where input 1 goes to track 1 etc. It has some great preset master choices, but you can change and save them if you like. I also have a boss br1600 that is awsome too, but the neo has a lot of cooler things that doo work well.It is all plastic but well made and its solid and kind of big but for the price you cant find a better unit, I researched all the stand-a lone units and this was the one to get. I also bought the dvd manual which did help some, but the book isnt too hard its just a lot of reading.
