Overview

The Tama S.L.P. G-Maple Snare is at the nexus of the snare drum universe. A fusion of boutique-style, select hardwoods and unique dimensions, it delivers a rich, thick tone with bright and surprising volume. With a thick 13-ply 10mm Maple shell, the generous dimensions and appearance of the drum make an immediate impression.

However, the innovations don't stop at the tone and appearance. Tama's work on identifying the ideal snare sound led them to develop the new hardware like the "Sound Arc" Hoops which add sustain, wider tuning range and a fuller frequency response. Hearty brass tube lugs will ensure a long lifespan for your tension rods, as well as your tune. And finally, the Starclassic Hi- Carbon Steel Snappy snares will emphasize needed punch and attack, as needed.

Comments about Tama S.L.P. G-Maple Snare Drum:

great piece of engineering at a mid price point. the warmth of maple with the attack of a metal drum. accommodates jazz, r&b, funk and pop with ease. great response and definition. using with an evans genera dry hd - high tuning. stock snare wires and hoops are very good. would not particularly recommend for heavy metal/ rock. highly musical for such great attack capabilities. be careful if you add it to your collection. it might just become your 'go-to' drum.

Comments about Tama S.L.P. G-Maple Snare Drum:

I first discovered this snare back when I spent 40 hours a week at [music store] and couldn't believe the sound. As someone who played every snare in the store extensively, I would say this was definitely my favorite of all. The sound has such a controlled "pop" that just cuts and there are so many tuning options that are viable. There are snares way above this price range that don't hold a candle to this model *IMO* in terms of tone and pure range of sound. Truly a gem worth much more than it costs.

Comments about Tama S.L.P. G-Maple Snare Drum:

So I finally pulled the trigger on this snare after many years of contemplation. It is SOLID! After just a few weeks of rehearsing with it, I can say that this is the new favorite snare of my collection (and I own other 13" snares). At first I was a little unsure where it sounded best to tune. I've thoroughly gone up and down the tuning range and the verdict is, it just sounds good period! It depends on what style of music you're playing but I was looking for the perfect backbeat rim-shot sound out of this drum.

In low to mid tuning ranges, you'll get plenty of sensitivity from the snares and an open sound. After I've let this drum "breathe" a bit, I have started to crank up the tuning tighter and tighter and now the rim-shot is really starting to bark! Every time I think that I can't possibly go any higher without choking the tone, it just takes it and screams back with incredible sound and volume!

The die-cast hoops are a perfect for this beefy thick maple snare. The snare throw-off is very smooth and the dual tension adjustment is great for tweaking the sound during your set. The only thing that is a bit puzzling is that the detachable snare butt end is kind of pointless because the snare strap is threaded through the bottom hoop so, without undoing the strap itself, you can't really pull the snares away from the reso head anymore than a few extra centimeters. This is really not a big deal because I don't mess with the bottom head much (it's always just tuned tight) and the lugs hold the tension well without lossening.

The stock heads must be pretty good because the drum sounds great out of the box with the Evans G1 coated batter and 300 resonant head. I love Evans drumheads but I generally think the G1 is a bit on the thin side (for my style) so I can't wait to hear what this drum sounds like with something like an Evans HD Dry batter.

Overall, this drum has exceeded my expectations!

Comments about Tama S.L.P. G-Maple Snare Drum:

This is a great snare. It sounds good tuned however you like, but, in my opinion, shines at a medium tuning. It has no problem staying in tune. The finish looks great.
Cons? I honestly don't love the rim shots on this, but they aren't at all bad sounding. I just think they sound better on my other, 14" snares.
Great drum all in all. Best snare I've purchased so far.

Comments about Tama S.L.P. G-Maple Snare Drum:

Excellent sound. I couldn't be happier with this drum. It has a nice crack when hitting rim shots. I did replace the stock head with an Evans Genera Dry just because I've used and like that head a lot. The snares are highly adjustable too. I really like that as during gigs I will go from hip/hop that requires a tight setting to country that sounds better with a looser sound.

Comments about Tama S.L.P. G-Maple Snare Drum:

Ok so I play DW drums exclusively and occasionally a Dunnett Stainless or a Super Solid Craviotto snare in the studio so I have used very high quality gear. I was looking for a 13" snare mainly to use as an aux snare in a live gigging situation. I stumbled across some youtube vids on this drum. Don't let the price fool you. This drum sounds very very good in all tuning ranges but especially cranked up. So good, that it replaced my 6 x 14 DW Edge as the drum of choice playing live. SM57's love this drum!! Suprising to me how sensitive this drum is. I did replace the factory snares with Puresound Blasters and of course the batter head with an Evans ST Dry, but dang this drum sounds great straight out of the box. If you play funk, R&B, Rock or power Pop you cannot go wrong with this snare. Don't think I would use it in the studio as I prefer metal snares for recording, but try this snare live mic'd up and you'll be a believer. Tama hit a home run with this one. Rim shots are some of the best I've ever heard.. great snare!!

              Best Snare

              By Davian Prospere

              from Brooklyn NY

Comments about Tama S.L.P. G-Maple Snare Drum:

This snare is phenomenal; it has a great tone and nice snare resonance. What I like about the snare is that it has two dials compared with other snares which can control the amount of sustain from the snare wires creating that dry crisp sound or loose resonance. Ring issue for me is not a problem because maple is dense enough to control ringing sustain. I give this snare 10/10.

Comments about Tama S.L.P. G-Maple Snare Drum:

I was looking to get a 13" snare and tried out several ranging from 200.00 to 1000.00 This one is by far the best one I played. For the price there is nothing better on the market. I was amazed how good this snare sounds. I used to use a Yamaha tour custom maple 14x6 snare that sounded really good. Since I bought the S.L.P It hasn't left my kit. This snare is a must have. The best investment Ive made for my kit. And wont break the bank.

I bought this G-Maple right when it came out to replace a 14x6.5 Pearl Brass snare and was worried that I would miss the volume of my old drum. This guy really impressed me right away. It certainly cuts through lots of loud amplification with no problems. High pitched, focused and a really nice sound. The higher you crank it, the better it sounds!
