  • One of the best snares on the market.

As reviewed by Shannan Johnson on 5/30/2011

I've waited about a year to wright up this review, in order to really test this thing out in all styles of music. This is one of the most unique snares on the market right now. This snare was built for the person who wanted something different from your average snare. First of, obviously, the choice of wood gives you a much darker, rounder, fatter tone than you would get from a maple drum. Secondly the taper of the drum when the snares are off is much longer than a maple snare would be. The use of a painted graphic, and wooden vent, instead of a metal badge ups the resonance of the drum. But the big difference between this baby and a normal maple snare is the size of the sweet spot of the shell. This snare is one of the easiest snares to tune out there because the density of the wood there are almost no extreme overtones. Finally this is one of the most dynamic snares I've ever heard. It can go from the quietest softs, to the most thunderous louds. Seriously the rimshots on this thing in its sweet spot will make your bandmates hate you because it is so loud. There are only two issues with the snare. One: You can't really crank this baby, you quickly run into the end of the sweet spot, and the drum starts sounding bad. This is a snare your going to want to leave o the low end of the spectrum. On the upside, in it's lowest extremes it has a almost tom like amount of tone and resonance. Second: This snare has trouble fitting into maple and birch kits. This snare will simply overpower you lighter woods. Because this baby is so dark it will sit in its own tone spectrum and cover up the rest of your drums. If you already have a mahogany or bubinga kit, then this will be your best bet for a snare. In the right kit setting, even if tuned low, this snare always sounds funky as well as fat. If you only have money for one snare you might want to get a maple snare, but if you already have a good maple snare and you want something really special, I highly recommend this snare. On a side note, if you can find the 14"x8" version of this snare, pick it up because it is an absolute monster, and is the best recording snare I have ever heard.

  • Just amazing

As reviewed by Sy Kim on 4/18/2011

I got this snare drum along with my starclassic bubinga set. It's simply amazing. It has a deep tone and a fat sound. It's very loud and it could also be very sensitive when it comes to playing softly with a lot of "buzz". I use it for any genre of music I play with my band. It works perfectly. It is a bit pricy but it's worth it. I highly recommend people to purchase it. It's awesome!
