Product Information

One drum, several distinct sounds.

The Mike Portnoy Signature snare boasts a 5-1/2" x 14" maple shell with die-cast hoops. Special design throw-off sets to 3 positions (off, loose, and tight) to give you 3 distinctly different sounds.

The story of Mike Portnoy's signature snare began in 1997 when Mike came up with the idea of a tension strainer controlled by a foot pedal-very cool, but very complicated and too expensive for all but maybe five people in the world. So Mike and Tama came up with an equally cool (but less complicated and expensive) three-way snare strainer which makes switching tension as easy as switching between two snare drums.

Mike Portnoy's Three-Way Tension Adjustable Strainer can lock into three different positions: off, loose, and tight.

One drum, several distinct sounds. Order now.

Tama Mike Portnoy Signature Maple Snare Features:

  • Maple shell
  • Die-cast hoops
  • Three-position throw-off settings

Very Good Sound but a little Pricey

If you want a snare with Mike Portnoy's name on it, then fine, this is a great snare with his name on it. If you want a great-sounding snare, and you don't care if anyone's name is on it, you can spend about $200 less and get the same sound and the same quality drum. Apparently the guy above me feels that the sticks are the most important part.

Quite Possibly the Perfect Snare

I just picked this up and slapped a Remo Coated CS w/ Bottom Black Dot on it, and boy is it AMAZING! Whoever says that with maple drums, you won't have fierce cut and attack accompanying the rounded tone is dead wrong. The maple Melody Master cuts like a machete and pierces like a spear while having absolutely clear, beautiful tone. This drum will easily fit into the context of any playing style. It is without a doubt THE MOST versatile snare I've ever played, and if you want to play and sound the best you ever have, you won't let the price tag on this drum stop you. I can't recommend this snare drum enough.

Very Good Sticks!!

These were the third sticks I tried after I started drumming. I went from Vic Firth to these and I automatically Fell in love. I liked how the stick is light and pretty thin, but they feel so solid. I gave quality a 4.5 because the tips fell of some, but Pro-Mark replaced them for free. Very Good stick, worth one try at least.
