this is a great device, it is the best 3.5 mm jack interface that is on the market, in my opinion. the sound quality is great, I have tried it with wired and wireless microphones, guitars, keyboards, condenser mics, and even a mixed output from a XENYX mixer, all worked great. If yours does not work, call Tascam, some had a jack problem that it did not make contact with the iOS device correctly, they will send you a small plastic washer to fix the problem. BEWARE TO IPOD TOUCH 1G USERS!!!! This device (although the packaging claims it does) does NOT work with the iPod touch 1st gen! this is not a fault of tascam, as apple has taken away audio input capability in the Ipod Touch 1G's last update!

Does not work

from Los Angeles, CA

Tried it with -iPhone 4 -iPad 2 & 3 -Voice Memo app -Vocalive -generic Vocal app and no sound from any of these devices. The 5 star review is obviously a fake. Am I missing something? This thing just doesn't work.

Easy to use

By Bobby O'Neal

from Memphis, TN

I use this device to plug my guitar or microphone into my iPad to record songs with Garage Band software. Read the instructions. They explain everything. I've read some of the negative reviews here and am convinced those people never read the instructions. This device is simple to use and versatile. It took me a couple of trial runs to get the sound I wanted but it would be that way with any new device.

Perfect Solution

By Phil Seymour

from Redding, California

I needed an interface that would allow me to use a quality condenser mic with my iPod. The Tascam iXZ is battery powered to provide phantom power. This allows me to use the iPod for a field recorder, a strategically placed mic for an extra track during live recordings, even for recording guitar and vocals with multi-tracks in the woods. I have tried all the above applications and enjoyed the ease of use, straight forward design, and when I transfer the results to GarageBand on my MacBook, the sound quality is good. It works nicely with the GarageBand App, but when hiking to record birds, frogs, streams, and waterfalls, I found that it was much simpler to use the StudioMini 4 track App because you don't have to turn off the metronome and set the track length each time you want to record, like with GarageBand.

At Last

from Syracuse, NY

Do you record stuff with your phone? No? Well, now maybe you should try it, because you can plug a real mic in, and the sound won't totally suck. The iXZ (not sure why they called it that, but it doesn't sound as dumb as iHaveAPreAmp) is simple, small, battery-powered, and effective. Like the IK Multimedia iRig and other guitar jacks, the iXZ adapts a guitar plug to the 4 conductor jack on your smartphone (yes, iPhone and Android and probably crackberry too), allowing input to a recording app, as well as output monitoring through a headphone jack. But way better than a mere guitar jack, or any of the dedicated microphone attachments such as the Blue Mikey, or Tascam's own iM2, the iXZ also supports any microphone you can connect with an XLR cord. That could be a basic handheld dynamic, or a Telefunken U47, if you happen to have one laying about. The iXZ has adjustable gain, not a lot, but as much as you'd expect for something with two AA batteries in it, and the phantom power without having to plug into a wall outlet is nice. It is truly portable. One of the best attributes of this little wonder is that it enables a host of apps, not just recording and sequencing, but audio tools such as spectrum analyzers and oscilloscopes, allowing you to evaluate sound chain changes scientifically, using signal splitters or your best mic, rather than the adequate, but sad, built-in mic on your phone with all of its attendant directionality and proximity effects. The Alesis I/O Dock also performs these tasks nicely, with the addition of a second channel, MIDI, and all that good stuff, but it doesn't work so great without a wall outlet nearby, and it only works with the iPad. The iXZ works with just about everything, and what it does it does well, and it does it in your pocket for less than a Benjamin.

Does not work - issues with plug

By Tuan Thai

from Sacramento, CA

This fairly straight forward device should have worked, except it didn't. The iPhone connector wasn't recognized by the iphone because on record, the iphone is still recording from the iphone microphone. I tried searching the net for any issues with this product and only found one comment in a youtube video that indicated another person had the same issue and Tascom might have sent them a washer to fix. I don't want a product that doesn't work. Will be returning.
